Hindus Don't Accept Converts?

  • Is it true that you can't convert to Hinduism? If there is no conversion in Hinduism and Hindus don't proselytize, then how do I exist? You can become Hindu, but if another path works for you, that's great too!

Hinduism is a Dharma (धर्म) Dharma means your duty as a human being. Dharma means to do the right thing. Being a good human being is the primary Dharma. The purpose of life is to be happy and spread happiness, accept people as they are. In Hinduism everyone is a believer regardless of what they believe, or not believe - we are all humans. There is no eternal heaven and there is no eternal hell.

Growing up in a Hindu family, I was told that people were just born Hindu. We thought of religion kind of like ethnicity, so if your parents were Hindu then you were Hindu, even if you did not believe in what Hinduism teaches. The closest analogy in the west I can think of is being Jewish (culturally vs practicing the faith). As I got older, I started meeting non-Indian Hindus. Initially I was skeptical, thinking they didn't really believe in Hinduism and were just saying that to be cool/exotic. But I came to see just how sincerely they were practicing the faith. Conversely, I realized many Hindus didn't believe in the religion and were even ridiculing it. If we as Hindus say that Hinduism is universal, then we cannot also say that you have to be Indian to be a Hindu. Universal truths cannot be exclusive--they are available for all. A religion that seeks to "convert" seems more like a club membership than an eternal path. But living in the west, we cannot avoid using the word convert. So even though Hinduism has no formal conversion process, a person may still feel that they have spiritually found an affinity for Hinduism, and hence "converted"--and we as Hindus should be more accepting of that. Namaste.

Great video Ambaa. Hindus don't have any official way of conversion apart from Arya Samaj. You can be a Hindu as long as you follow dharma. This concept is beautiful but there is a down side to it. After independence King of Kashmir wrote a letter to Pandits in Kashi saying that some Kashmiri muslims want to reconvert to Hinduism and those Pandits refused to take them back saying you can only be born Hindu. There are many instances where lot of muslims wanted to reconvert but were not allowed to come back.
In nutshell, no formal conversion into Hinduism is a great philosophy but less pragmatic in the face of religions like Islam

I'm a bit guilty of thinking like that (can't "convert" to Hindu) when I was younger. It was simply because from where I come, there is not just caste, but sub-caste, community (based on the geographical area), the main family God, family lineage, and so on and so forth. If someone were to convert, how would they get all these - something that is only acquired by birth? Why would anyone want all these complications in their life? I was very naive then and didn't understand dharma or Vedas or Upanishads. Just followed rituals because my family did so and asked me to do it.I've changed my view now.. I must say America has greatly influenced my thought process and made me a better Hindu.

    • @thewhitehindu
      @thewhitehindu  7 лет назад +12

Ambaa didi, you are right that some "hindu" don't accept converts but I can assure you HINDUISM does! You cannot halt your ascension towards where your heart & soul is taking you, for nobody! The whole of Southeast Asia was Hindu in the early centuries till the 15th century & is still thriving in Bali, among the chams of Vietnam & other pockets around that region...HOW DID THEY BECOME HINDU? Varna is ur nature & ability, U might be a brahmin by the fact that you love to learn & disseminate knowledge or you might be a shudra by being a talented artist either way you are vital as one of the four pillars that society stands on. The allegorical stories in the epics, people who were either cursed to stone or born within a non-human body got moksha by the touch of Avatars meaning ANYONE can get moksha with the nectar of Dharma.

Instead of just calling our claim "misinformation" why don't you back up your claim with verses from shastras that prohibits conversion?History is full of proofs of non-indians & non-hindus converting, so where do YOU get ur idea from?what is your source? Also explain how non-indians on the island of Bali, the tribes in the deep forests of Borneo & the Chams of vietnam are Hindus! Why is the biggest hindu temple outside of India & built in a style that is foreign to India!

    • @AbhijeetDolai007
      @AbhijeetDolai007 7 лет назад +1

To convert from something to "Hinduism", "Hinduism" should exist in the first place as a religion/organisation. Show me one Shastra/Purana/Veda/Scriptures that even has the word "Hindu" or "Hinduism", conversion is a billion miles away. Hinduism is a culture, history is full of people who have accepted it and followed it as their own culture, not converted. Just like the Ahoms of Assam who came from Thailand.

All paths don't lead home. The Dharmic religions are completely different than the Abrahamic religions. They have completely different goals. Someone that meditates in a cave for 15 years will not have the same results as someone that goes to church on sunday with their mom. And Wiccans not converting people is the exact reason pagans have been oppressed for 2,000 years. If you don't convert people, then more dogmatic religions gain dominance and oppress you. Become the wolf or you will be the sheep the wolf eats.

One of the main reasons that people of European ancestry are interested in Hinduism is because they became disconnected from their own spiritual traditions with the imposition of Christianity on Europe. If you look at the pagan traditions of the Europeans, they are not to dissimilar to Hindu traditions. Hindus unlike Europeans, did not lose their original spiritual traditions as the Europeans had. Hindu philosophy is sublime, but I believe that people of European ancestry, at least subconsciously, find a re-connection back to their own pagan roots when they gravitate towards Hinduism.

People from animistic religions had no issues converting to Hinduism in south and southeast asia when their Kings converted.
Now, people born in the abrahamic faiths have incompatible values and feel the need for a conversion in order to join the group, otherwise they become insecure with the lack of rules and just go back to their old abrahamic religion because Hindu sages talk about "all religions are the same". Even if an abrahamic converts, he cannot reject the core values of the religion that he was born with.
Now the only issue with conversion is that new converts have no gotra (lineage) which is important for marriage purposes and they have no geneology register at Haridwar. So then the question is should you wait till 3rd generation to accept the family as having genuinly embraced Hindu values...
But I will add that certain new members are far more enthusiastic than people who were born into Hinduism when it comes to exploring the roots of Hinduism.

It's been said in the geeta, "One who devotes himself on me with any form of me in mind, is indeed worship me". so all need to do is to think about god and do your duties unattached.

You have to be polytheist and believe in many gods. I am hindu and a polytheist. That is very different from Christianity. we have sun god, water god, elephant god, monkey god, etc. etc.
I am an idol worshipper. Although churches have idols of christ but they claim not to be idol worshippers. wonder how that works?

In hinduism no one converts you and there’s no official or required conversion, in fact you aren’t even required to give up Christianity to also be a Hindu believer or follower. I know that may seem strange to those who follow Abrahamic religions whose followers are required to pledge their religion as the one true god or path. The journey of discovering the hindu faith begins with you. You are encouraged to read the texts, discover for yourself and learn about it. Start with the baghavad gita, then read the vedas, the upanishads, Ramayana, Mahabaratha and the Puranas.

man ,this concept of conversion has been initiated by all those religion who came much later than HINDUISM...............there is no such concept of conversion in hinduism as there was no such thing till the arrival of christinity.
the date of hinduism goes back to thousands and thousand years before the concept of a established religion itself....................according a recent study our vedic and indus civilization is even more older than 8,000 years before the arrival of any other faiths .another scientific discovery in gujarat coast has found a drowned city which is identified as dwarka..........which according to MAHABHARAT was destroyed due to the curse of gandhari the mother of kauravs...........................and evidence that has been collected there indicates to be atleast 30,000 yrs old............all these thins i have mentioned is available on youtube...............just imagine how old is hinduism.

it is also bit obvious that those who come later try to spread their ideas, product, culture etc by various means and that is why christinity ,islam etc have resort to various means to convert people.......this is the reason just in few decades of its arrival ISLAM has destroyed almost all the ancient civilization like babylonian,mesopotamian,zorastrian,ezyptian.............by brutal force of murder, loot and destruction..................but even after 800 years of islamic rule in INDIA more than 80% of people are still hindus...............this is only because our root of firm belief in our culture,religion,philosophy...........we are still there.

I understand that but I still find that the word "convert" is necessary for people discovering Hinduism. They do not know about this nuance and this is the word that they understand. More here: www.patheos.com/blogs/whitehindu/2014/03/phases-of-the-convert/

Because muslim rulers of India found it easy to manage politically because the society will not pose any threat to their authority as it is devided on caste lines than the other countries you mentioned that were having a more cohesive society based on religion like Zorashtrianism which may stand in unity against the Muslim rulers. So it is necessary to make those people to convert to Islam to control and manipulate easily using religion. Not because Hindu thought is superior to other thoughts.

Only Sanatan Dharma should be a proselytising religion because the Vedas which is a revealed texts contains no special affinities towards any particular race, ethnicity geographical location and history. Almighty God addresses the whole humanity while teachings the various sciences regarding creation, code of moral conduct, duties etc. In Vedas God says humans to 'Make the world Arya', which means to teach the true knowledge of One Almighty God and to maintain the civilised character of human society. Vedas is the oldest religious text in the world claims to be a revelation from Almighty God.
The followers of the Veda a.k.a the adherents of the Sanatan Dharma are called 'Arya' which means son of God/Obedient of God. In ancient times only Vedic Dharma was prevalent from asia minor to South East Asian nations.
In Turkey the Bogazkhoi inscriptions is the evidence of the practices of the Vedic religion in ancient times.
Mittani kingdoms was a vedic kingdom.

It's really what you believe yourself to be. Hinduism is a very broad thing. There is a huge expanse, which this philosophy covers... From the very basic pagan polytheistic ideas of many deities to yoga and atman (soul) to omnipresent Brahman, the one God, formless, nameless, attribute less, which is extremely abstract. Also, there is the traditional thing going that we learn from our forefathers.... Through generations. Hindus believe in initiation from a Guru, which is both a physical and mental training really, starting from the simple mantra. So, whoever receives initiation, becomes a Hindu. Yes, in that manner people's from foreign cultures may and do get converted into Hinduism.

The word "Hinduism" itself is a misnomer, created by Persians to describe the people by the Indus river. There is an absolutely huge variation in beliefs within Hinduism, but in general here are some commonalities: you don't need to "convert." Just realize and accept the truths as taught by the magnificent texts/teachings in the Vedas, Upanishads, the Yoga Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita. The cardinal truth is that there is just ONE intelligence/energy pervading the universe, and all living beings are just like sparks that came out of that fire. All tiny pieces of the ONE. No need for fear, anxiety that we will burn in an imaginary hell if we don't accept a particular ideology. To know and realize, from deep within us, that we are absolutely secure, part and parcel of the whole, and live in that joy and without fear, that is the teaching of the Vedas, particularly the Upanishads. I'd simply put it this way: once you abandon the narrow and limited ideology of any religion that tries desperately to convince you to cling to its ideology, you are free; you become a liberated being. You become "Hindu." You become a Yogi, you become enlightened. You no longer proclaim or claim anything, just live in joy and true freedom. You realize the Vedic teaching of Tat Tvam Asi," or Thou Art That. You are a living , breathing, thinking piece of God. The only thing required is to KNOW, from deep within, this truth. Once you KNOW, you become a Jnani, a Gnostic, and realize Gnosis or the true knowledge. Oh, hey, go ahead any deny the presence of God, if you wish!!! An excellent start!!! Start QUESTIONING!!! The truth will be revealed from WITHIN YOU. I published a book on this subject: www.amazon.com/Way-Beyond-Religion-Inner-Spirit/dp/1418434701/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520187758&sr=8-1&keywords=a+way+beyond+religion

And in the highest rank installed themselves
      For their own benefit
All these God's and scriptures are Invented by them for their own benefit

Buddhism is one part of Hinduism actually. Many Buddhists&Monks like in Southern Asia, Mahayana&Vajrayana Buddhism considered Buddha as Spiritual mentor but pray to Hindu deities like Lord Brahma known as Phra Phrom in Thailand&Mahakala or Narasimhi known as Sing Dong Ma in Tibetan Buddhism to protect themselves during meditation or temple. Many of us also believe that Buddha was avatar of Lord Vishnu.

I grew up Christian. I see truth in Hinduism, but the only path that actually helps me make progress is Buddhism. I’m in the middle of reading the Bhagavad Gītā and it is indeed a beautiful way of life to be Hindu. My mom got scared when I read some ślokas to her in translation, because Arjuna praises Viṣṇu as if He were God (which He is). I’m still reluctant about telling my family about my conversion to Buddhism.

well there's some truth but it's also false in modern times. as hindu was a geographical identity unlike now when it became synonymous to religious one. actually the real identity of hindus is dharmic but as india suffered so much during islamic n christian invasion things changed.
since hindus kinda easy going n accepting so they accepted their geographical identity as religious one. that's why ppl get confuse about either u can convert or not.
there are 5 conversion methods depending upon the teachings of sampradaya. so anybody can convert to dharma. no one has no problem

Very few know this . Our pagan system enlisted a set of 49 y chromosomes called gautra and kula . Usually when abrahamics converts they destroy the gautra information . That gautra is necessary when doing puja s , yajnas , marriage and death . For those muslim names from which gautra can be extracted it will be easy for them to come back home . Thats why its difficult for us to simply convert . Ours is not artificial its eternal .

why do people still believe cast has anything to do with Hinduism? it doesn't, it's just become entangled with the hinduism because it was begun in India, and stayed there mainly because the Indians were isolationist back then and considered anyone outside of India as barbarians and at that time they were kind of right, they mixed culture with dharma and now we have huge secularism in hinduism because people aren't educated about their own books and I'll call it religion even though it isn't one, cast system is just an Indian culture thing and we must respect it but it has nothing to do with hinduism.

All of Southeast Asia was Hindu for over a thousand years. Vietnam used to be the Hindu kingdom of Champa, Indonesia was the Hindu kingdom of the Majapahit, Cambodia was Angkor, Singapore was Simhapura. There are thousands of years of history of non-Indians (people living outside the subcontinent which we today call India) being Hindu and most Indians know nothing about it. Bali today remains Hindu majority. Anyone who thinks only Indians can be Hindu and that it must be hereditary are ignorant of a few thousand years of history.
