BEEE ROLL!!! Use this thread to show me your B Roll Challenge Vids!! I hope you guys have fun with this - I find it quite fun, especially the more ridiculous the spot :)
*“Find somewhere slightly uninteresting and make a 30 second b-roll sequence in that spot”* This was exactly what brought me to buy my own camera and see what I could do. I was fascinated by how these different cinematographers can make the most normal places look dope 👍
Agree! Came here to say that PM's videos have always been amazing, but this is a new level. To actually hear the thought process behind it all is extremely helpful!
0:52 I used to wonder how creators like yourself would always go over self-dictated time requirements. It seemed like such a simple thing to stick to. Then I started making my own videos and was like *oh* lmao. Don't worry about "fast" too much with us Pete, I'm sure I speak for a lot of us when I say I'd watch literally *hours* of anything you put on this channel 🗣️. Great video as always 👌
This is VERY HELPFUL. I genuinely needed this to increase my B-Roll practice action. I appreciate that he goes out of his way to do these things for people and to do so in an articulate and genuine manner. Special thanks to this creator and his efforts to help us fellow creators out.
I think the best part of this challenge has been watching those who have made a b roll video. There are so many interpretations and levels of skill. I've watched videos from so many different channels in different countries. I've subscribed to new channels and am learning and interacting with new people. It's been a very fun ride! I would love to do more of these challenges!
Please do more like this! I love seeing how you scouted the area and talked about angles and frames before shooting. THEN you showed the results. LOVED IT. It helps me see where I need to think outside of the box. AND I like how you followed it up with the B-roll Challenge videos. It makes me want to participate.
This is eyeopener. I would like to watch this video again and again. I just love the pacing. So much of info packed in this single video. Thanks a ton!
Peter, I’ve watched your creativity for a long while now and I have to say this is the best “how to” you’ve done. Very detailed and practical. I am sooooo inspired. I actually think I can do B now.Thank you!
I enjoy all your content and tutorials but this from a tutorial aspect is cream of the crop. Breaking it down to such a simplistic explanation was key. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with shooting options I lose focus on the story or shots. This video will be something I watch over and over before I go shoot to remind me of the basics! More tutorials like this please!
I do real estate Photography and Video tours and I want to say, you have sped my post-production up by at least 150%. I know unrelated video but I just had to stop and say thank you, Peter. You rock!
Incredible video Peter. It's nice to see creators share there actual thought process. The portion where you talked about what you saw b4 you shot was the beauty of this video. Good stuff bud.
I LOVE hearing your thought process throughout the this filming process. Hearing your reasoning behind each shot was extremely helpful. I would love to see a follow-up to this video on how you went about stitching these clips together in a similar style where you give "live" commentary as to the reasons behind your decisions while editing them together e.g. when to punch in, speed ramp, use the camera transitions, and also how you keep it from being "too busy" and in the sweet spot where there is still a lot going on, but it is not overwhelming or cheesy. Really great job with this one and great edit! Huge fan here in Boston!
...and Imagine how funny it would look with the animated hands talking to the window. If I were inside, I'd be looking behind me to see who TF he was talking to. lol
The transitions and sound effects are what makes the B-Roll so good. I would love to see you do the same kind of video but on a fasted paced over the top hip hop montage.
He said some people like to shoot wide, and some people like to shoot tight so he showed what those lens' looked like. Pete himself *normally* shoots tight with a 85mm from what I recall. He's just showing two different types of people and perspectives. The main part of this story was to basically challenge yourself with the gear you've got, if you don't have an 85 mm but you have a 18 or 35 mm, use that and vice versa, Have a good one :D
Peter, I always LOVE your b-roll clips! Thank you for walking us through your thought (and visual) process to help us understand how you create your footage. Please do more videos like this!
the same principle applies: wide-tight and if you only have a 50mm prime get close for some bokeh blurry backround and then step back to shoot the panorama. I'm shure they Will get some pretty good footage with practice
I'm sure you get this a lot but your channel is my favorite resource for all things photography. I recently started building a small real estate photography business and let me just say your videos have taught me more info in the past few months than any photography class could have. Keep up the good work and thank you!
You’re firing on all cylinders! Love your stuff and all the value you throw at your audience. It’s such a pleasure to follow your work and your passion for video/photography is contagious.

There is a free audio section of youtube as well though limited but still good collection:) In bw, would you mind checking my video and would really appreciate ur feedback too :D:D ruclips.net/video/GiIy0zvBbjA/видео.html
Drinking coffee watching this! Best combo! Just wanted to pop in and send a heartfelt thanks your way. I've learned an incredible amount from you and it's been amazing watching your journey to 1 and 2 mil! Congrats btw! Keep rockin' on and doing what you love brother! Much love from California!
I found this particular video very inspiring. Shot some b-roll around my house and out of windows during a rainstorm. Not groundbreaking, but fun! Thanks PMcK!
Please do more of those B-Roll Challenges at different spots! Its so interesting to see, what the area looks before and after you b-rolled it! Loved it and learned alot from this video! thanks :)
very cool challenge, reminds me of the "bad vendor" challenge in photography that people did. You would go to walmart or home depot or wherever that you would normally not go for a nice portrait shoot and try to make it as epic as possible.
I missed this video for some godforsaken reason, today i found that i did, and essentially re-binged all videos you uploaded over 2018 starting from this till present. This channel is a prt of my life worth every second i put into it. Aspiring filmmaker here, drawing inspiration from you. Cheers Pete!

Nasib Khatri Do you have a smartphone? It’s about not the equipment, it’s all about your creativity. Give it a go, zoom in and zoom out to get tight/wide shots... good to go!!
Hey Peter... Another awesome tutorial! Thanks for sharing so much of all you've learnt. Something that I would find so helpful is a tutorial of how you actually put this video together in post. To see the end result is amazing!,...but to understand and see how you construct it would also be an awesome learning. Cheers Peter..thanks again for all you so generously give. Simon.
Peter, love the style of this video! Thanks for taking us outside to show us your process for getting the shots you do. I (and maybe others) would like to see more videos like this!! Inspires me to go out and shoot. Thanks again keep up the awesome work!
Hey Pete! Love the way you inspire people with your vlog, big thumbs up to that! About the b-roll... I would have loved you to explain the importance of having a wide shot at the beginning of the sequence. That helps establish the geography of the scene so when you jump to the details is more a description of what-was-interesting instead of a slideshow of things. Keep up the good work man!!!
Man, I watch you go through saying exactly what you're going to do, and am still amazed at the finished product. You inspire me to work harder and keep practicing.
Choose an uninteresting place, take one lense, do it on your own and go creative. I was literally cheering on my couch when you made the introduction like this. THIS is what I have been looking for! You show that you don't need to be at the top of Mount Everest to make awesome b-roll, and that gives a starter like me great confidence to go out there and just try. THANKS Peter!
I watched this whole video 2 times in a row to just take in everything you were saying because its so valuable haha, thanks so much for helping us out Peter! Ive got a whole new mindset on what to look for when shooting, and I've realized how much the little things matter. You're a God
I really like at 8:03 when you have the bus passing in slow mo and the angle on the bus almost perfectly matches the angle of the sloping sidewalk. Great shot my friend.

Hi mr coffee lover.....💜💜

Can you do a broll only using 60 fps
I love this. Teaches people to see the world as a playground. No such thing as boring places.

simplicity gets overlooked i guess, but i agree this was the same reason why I bought my own dslr as well.
Song 0:01-0:15 ?
What camera did you go with?
Challenge Accepted! Love that Peter is able to get people to actually get out and film, instead of just watching we are participating.
Seriously one of the best practical tutorials you’ve done. Loved it! Keep up the great work PM.
Agree! Came here to say that PM's videos have always been amazing, but this is a new level. To actually hear the thought process behind it all is extremely helpful!
agree, I was super pumped up about this one, I would definetly watch more of it, or whatever PM does, I Will be into it.
My video is so funny 😂 first time with premiere pro ghaha
Watching this takes me back... I miss this era of PM!!! So many bad ass tips!

It's transitions that makes all the magic happen
This is eyeopener. I would like to watch this video again and again. I just love the pacing. So much of info packed in this single video. Thanks a ton!

Great video! It's so to see how someone like Peter is actually thinking of and creating his shots!
This was epic. Like, holy shit. #pmbrollchallenge is going to be on my list of things to do this weekend
I'm already going outside with my camera
Joel Alzugaray TAKE ME WITH YOUUUUUUU
Now to practice it, going to Catalina Island to make it happen. Motivated.
Blinkit Photography NICE!!!

This is so great! Thanks, Peter! :)
That footage is butter
The transitions and sound effects are what makes the B-Roll so good. I would love to see you do the same kind of video but on a fasted paced over the top hip hop montage.
“Challenge yourself to one camera, one lens...” 01:22
“I’m going to use a 35mm and an 85mm...” 03:05
🤔
To be before he showed reels with only 35, and only 85.
He said some people like to shoot wide, and some people like to shoot tight so he showed what those lens' looked like. Pete himself *normally* shoots tight with a 85mm from what I recall.
He's just showing two different types of people and perspectives.
The main part of this story was to basically challenge yourself with the gear you've got, if you don't have an 85 mm but you have a 18 or 35 mm, use that and vice versa,

thumbs up...👍👍
Now it's time for "THE B ROLL EDITING" :)
Please, do it
Yeah!
"Instead of just a hard cut transition, Makes a hard cut transition" 10:00
lol yeah
Peter, I always LOVE your b-roll clips! Thank you for walking us through your thought (and visual) process to help us understand how you create your footage. Please do more videos like this!
Brilliant. As always, blown away by how you do this Peter.
Simply a magical B-ROLL monster you are!
Bro this is the best vid.
Best tips,
p.s I hope I get good at broll tho.
most peole dont have multiple lenses to use. they probably just have a kit lens. we need a video on making the best of your kit lens 18-55 lens.
Shoot at 18, and shoot at 55.
This is why i love Peter McKinnon
If your camera shoots in 4K, punch in on the footage to get a good crop and your 55 becomes a 110 at least. One lens - two different perspectives.
the same principle applies: wide-tight and if you only have a 50mm prime get close for some bokeh blurry backround and then step back to shoot the panorama. I'm shure they Will get some pretty good footage with practice
Exactly what I thought my answer would be to that question. Simple as that :-)
I'm sure you get this a lot but your channel is my favorite resource for all things photography. I recently started building a small real estate photography business and let me just say your videos have taught me more info in the past few months than any photography class could have. Keep up the good work and thank you!
I love this video sorry I missed the challenge I hope another one happens
If you ever get a Son you need to name him Peter McBroll.

You’re firing on all cylinders! Love your stuff and all the value you throw at your audience. It’s such a pleasure to follow your work and your passion for video/photography is contagious.
hey
i was wondering if it’s possible to shoot a b roll on a smart phone camera.??
to be honest i know 0.0009% about photography and cinematography . so dont mind my stupid question
Shaamikh Mohamed lol u can do it with any device
Shaamikh Mohamed
Download filmic pro app. Makes the videos look better with all the options they have
But B-Roll with those tight jeans seems like impossible
TechRadicalTv quite the contrary, most tight jeans are elastic. They are like tights especially if you wear them lifted from knee high.
Just my insight and experience. As he pointed out. That smooth, delicious b-roll made shoot in a rather Mondaine place. It's all about perspective.
Ooo0 so excited to do this! Just added it to my upcoming videos list!!!

Loving the Petes eye view sections with the explanation of what you're specifically looking at. Be Peter McKinnon VR experience coming soon..!
Please what's the name of music 2:14
I noticed how you use sound effects in addition to your b-roll! Where do you get them??
Sicsen epidemic sound has thousands of sound effects and I believe Peter has a sound pack he created that's for sale
Once you get over 2 million subscribers random sound effects just start happening in your actual day to day life and his mic happens to pick them up. Strange but true.

Taylor Cut Films made a video about that and it is really good. Check it out
Great tutorial from the B Roll king. What I loved best is how you walked us through your thinking process for creating the b roll = massively useful!

Heyy Pete, thanks for the tutorial. Loved the BRoll.
Did you just create the same thumbnail as Matti?
xD I noticed that too!
"--instead of a hard cut--"
*cuts*
I was like and there's a hard cut... how clever lol
So true that it always boils back down to the eye and mind of the filmmaker, not the gear - great job!
I found this particular video very inspiring. Shot some b-roll around my house and out of windows during a rainstorm. Not groundbreaking, but fun! Thanks PMcK!
