A clean action video!
Did you know it’s important for a swan to keep its feathers clean?
A swan bath is a lot of fun to watch!
Here you can see wings beating first on one side, then the other- this beating helps dislodge dirt and debris.
You will see whole body dipping and somersaults, with feet and legs flailing in the air as the swan turns under water. Dipping and somersaults wet the feathers and also dislodges dirt and debris.
Water slides off swan heads and bodies. Swans look like dolphins at play when they are taking a bath.
Following a bath, a swan will rise up out of the water and flap its wings to dislodge any final dirt and help align feathers before later preening. (As a photographer, I watch for that rising display action for beautiful photos.)
Then, here, you spot an adult swan pair (white) near the icy shore. They bring their chests and heads together in pair bonding. They dip their heads and necks towards each other making an iconic heart shape.
Another swan pair approaches, also head and neck dipping. You know a dispute will be happening! Sure enough- but it is only a little one. Still, there is the dramatic flash of white wings- always a great photo opportunity.
Meanwhile, the bathing continues undisturbed behind them.
