In the November 2016 issue of Classic Rock magazine, the solo from Quadrant 4 (from Billy Cobham's Spectrum album), was named #82 of the best 100 rock solos of all time.
Zephyr 2 albums, spectrum, James Gang Bang and Miami, Alphonse Mouzon Mind Transplant album, Moxy first album as Bolin plays solos on 6 of the 8 tracks, Teaser, Private Eyes solo albums and Deep Purple Come Taste The Band. There is also a lot of stuff released by the Tommy Bolin archives over the years including his band Energy. All of this material is worth investing time in. He was a great musician
Was lucky enough to see Tommy Bolin with The James Gang in Calgary Alberta Canada. Was in the front row. I play guitar to this day because I was mesmerized by his playing.
We may have seen the same tour. I saw him w the James Gang in Rock Hill, SC, I think 973. Brownsville Station opened. Still the most staggering guitar performance Ive ever seen. A few years later he was coming back to Charlotte as Jeff Becks opener. I was ecstatic just to get to see Tommy again, not Beck. Had tickets in my hand. Show was scheduled for Dec 12, 1976 and he died on Dec 4 in Miami. I was devastated going back to Record Cellar to get a refund. Sad day.
I'm always surprised that almost no one mentions Tommy Bolin's work in the band Zephyr. That's where I first heard him and, IMO, it's his best (recorded) work.
Ironic that Tommy died while on tour opening for Jeff Beck…..Jake had a band in San Diego (South Bay) called Teaser. They were really good. They did Bolin tunes and he was the first guy I saw doing Van Halen and killing it…
Back in those days, it was really tough to learn the songs. There was no TAB, there were no magazines, there was no video. You had slow down the records to 16 RPM and figure out each song by ear. That was tough, only the talented survived.
To this day Teaser is in my top 5 albums of all time. Couldn't pick a favorite. That changes every time I listen to it.
Tommy bolin damn near steals the show on the spectrum album and look who he's playing with!
I had Mahavishnu Orchestra and Billy Cobhams Spectrum on 8 track, cassette and vinyl. Still have the vinyl. Still blows me away today.

Jake E Lee's guitar part on Bark at the Moon is absurdly difficult
Yep!! Teaser is the best!

Jake is an amazing guitarist!! One of my early influences, shred monster with a thoughtful structure to his music.
Yeah, I liked that album. Still have it, of course.
Hey David it's me. Just found your channel.
I would send them to the Private Eyes record but also to the amazing Live at Ebbet's Field show
That live at Ebbet's Field album to me has the best live version of Stratus ever recorded. It's absurd.
Jake E Lee comes across as a really nice guy and great sense of humour... Just sayin...

@@acepaul407 funny….we used to slow down the records to understand the damn lyrics too…
