Some other pointers, Akemi filler will allow you to restore the gouges to original shape, grinding it down makes a flat spot. Tape off the area you're sanding so the sand paper doesn't scratch any further in than the gouge or sand with care by folding the sand paper properly. Notice your repair became bigger when you sanded it. When you tape the area for spraying the tape should ramp off the surface - that will give a feathered area instead of a hard line, helps if color match isn't perfect. 25 yrs experience in cosmetic repairs of this type.
Thank pal! Good to know the proper way of doing it!
How does the repair hold up if the lip has been repaired and the tire is going to be replaced. I assume the same as stock. Is that a fair assumption?
Awesome tips thank you, got a question about the tape tho - what do you mean by having the tape ramp off the surface?
Thank you
Thx pal. Not sure what you meant by "ramp off" the surface...maybe I was saying something else and wasn't pronouncing something clearly. If you can send me the time mark on the video I can take a look and get back to you. In general, you want to tape off the surface to prevent the spray...however, you want to create a slight transition area to blend the paint. If there's a clear line between the tape after spraying, use some goo-be gone to gently wipe along the line to create a blend. Feel free to reach out with any other question.
@@SlowAsianDriver Allow your tape to ramp off the surface means to don't press the tape against the surface in the spray area, if the tape is slightly lifted about 1/4" the spray paint will feather itself, as opposed to the tape pressed down which will leave a sharp paint line. It helps with imperfect paint matches.
We're all come here with our shame, but leave with a nice looking wheel. I got some rash in my MYP this morning and immediately came here. Great video!
Thanks pal.
Thanks for the video! I just curbed the same wheels on my Y. (just got it 2 weeks ago) Like a knife to my heart. I will try your DIY tips this weekend!
Bummer…but it happens. Lol. Please test the spray paint color first as some viewers have reported shade variations between paint batches. Good luck!
@@SlowAsianDriver update: my husband said I will curb my wheels again so it would be pointless to do your DIY tips. I ended up curbing wheels again a couple days later and just bought a big black Sharpie : (
Btw: I am getting high beamed a lot by many oncoming cars. Is this normal for the Y?
🤣🤣🤣. As for getting high beamed, I don’t experience that at all. You should ask the service center check the headlight level and adjust if necessary.
This video brings me hope. Thank you for sharing.
👍
You are indeed “my husband “ too … the “perfect driver “😂😂🤣😂
🤣🤣🤣. A few weeks ago I laughed at my wife for getting a red light ticket. Well as Karma would have it, I got one today, too. 🤦🏻♂️
Great video! I just picked up my MYP this week and curbed the RFW yesterday on a low curb in a under construction parking lot. I was upset at first but realized that it will likely happen again:). It’s an opportunity to bond with my new car. Same configuration as yours BTW. Thanks for the links. It will be my Friday DIY project! I haven’t used my Drexel in a while anyway! Cheers.
Thanks Brian. Btw, Home Depot told me the paint color varies from batch to batch. A few viewers told me the color was slightly off. Mine was spot on, but I would test the paint out first. Good luck and congrats on the new ride!
Thanks for the heads up. I had to go to 3 different Home Depot’s yesterday to find Carbon Mist. The 1st two stores showed having inventory but in reality they didn’t. Just finished the repair. Color matches perfectly. Definitely Zen process!
Glad it worked! Now if you happen to curb it up again it’s an inexpensive repair :)
It happens! I have 2 out of 4 with rash.
Bro that meme is so funny cuz I let my mom drive my car and she scratched the hell outta my rim so now I’m here 😭😭
🤣🤣🤣 shortly after this video my wife and I took turns scratching up the rest of the wheels. Now we don’t even notice the scratches. Lol.
Nicely done I have 2 rims to do myself. thanks Dave
Glad to help.
Love your videos on Tesla. Great content and presentation style. Thumbs up
Thank you! It means a lot to me :)
just curb rashed my left front wheel on my brand new one week old MYP😭😭 I was even joking on that same day with my wife about how long it will took me to have my first rim scratch...21" uberturbines are notorious for curb rash, it's crazy how quickly they get scratched!:(
If it makes you feel any better, shortly after this video was made, my wife and I took turns scratching up 3 other wheels. Lol.
If you don’t mind me asking did you fix it? And what product did you use?
lol, great video thank you for that. I can breathe a little easier now about fixing my rims
It’s not perfect but does 90% of the job. 😄
I'm a new member of the curb rash club... doh
she won't let me forget either
🤣 happens to the best of us.
Hilarious intro. And something my wife would make me do as well 😂.
😬
good job! but for next time, i would mask the tyres around the damage and also sand it by hand for smoother finish.
Thanks for the tip!
WOW! Great restoration.
Thx pal.
You're wife is wonderful. She grinded the rims on your Tesla just so you could do a DYI video on how to fix it.
🤩 nice work, watch out for those baby curbs.
Thanks pal...my wife reminds me every day. Lol
Thank you so much ..Just got mine yesterday..Haha.. Is the paint an exact match or do you see a very slight difference in close view, in person?
It’s pretty close
Wow I'm really surprised it worked so well!
Dude! I just curbed the wheel! Sf street curbs stick out. I need to remember that!
Happens to the best of us. Lol. Btw a few viewer told me they’ve seen some variation in paint color…just beware.
@@SlowAsianDriver I need to add some alloy filler. I am going to have a pro do it. They have some in yelp and some examples of their work are model y 21 Uberturbines. Mine curb rash is about an inch or so. I take the turns slow and wide now. 🤣
🤣
Is that a Cirrus jacket you're wearing? Nice video. I just curbed my brand new Performance and was looking for repair videos. Not sure I trust my skills to do this so I guess I will be paying the $150 to have a professional do it.
Yep :) do you fly, too? As for the repair, I’m not that handy and worse case you wasted $40 bucks. :)
@@SlowAsianDriver Nice! I have about 10 hours in a SR20, but most of my hours are in a 172. Hoping to increase the Cirrus time exponentially in the future as I finish up the PPL. :-) Good point on the rims. lol.
172 is a tank and can take tons of abuse. I know I’ve done a few hard landings aka controlled crashes when I was a student pilot. Lol. Good luck with your PPL training and blue skies.
Hilarious start of the video & pretty good repairing job: Thumbs up! :-)
Although I actually didn't want to come into the situation of needing to watch a repair video...but you know, the Uberturbines love to be repaired. At least mine do...sigh.
I can tell you it was hard to swallow my wounded pride and my wife enjoyed every minute of it.
Good job
Thanks!
I just curbed up my MYP in a Vegas parking garage so I definitely know how it feels lol
Not long after, my wife and I took turns curbing up the remaining 3 wheels…at first it irked me to no end, now I don’t even notice them. Lol
@@SlowAsianDriver I cannot wait to try your method out!
Great video. I have hope now!
Fingers crossed!
Just used this spray paint on my Uberturbine rims and the color/sheen doesn't really match at all. It's darker and far shinier than the rims
I had a conversation with the paint rep at Home Depot as I ran into a similar situation helping a buddy with his rim. The rep said between batches there are slight variations. What we did is wet sanded the shiny part to match the rest. But our color was spot on.
Nice Video!
Thx pal!
Those rims have a hint of purple we just had the pros come fix our curb rash it was almost the entire rim ugh.
$150 looks brand new but the guy said you won't ever find a touch up paint color match because of the purple on the paint of the 21" uberturbine rims. They color matched it. Why didn't I ask him for a lil paint smh.
Good to know. If I had the confidence that my wife (or me in this case) will not curb it up again, I would’ve gladly used a pro. About 6 weeks after this video, my wife curbed up another wheel…so my ghetto repair already paid for itself. lol.
@@SlowAsianDriver you are doing right! I curbed my wife's model y performance day 3 after many a lecture I gave her about the bigger rims and how to drive. I had to pay lol
But we both watched your vid and enjoyed keep up the good work!
Thank you for the video, but CARBON MIST is not matching color, it's much darker than the original Uberturbine wheel's color. So if anyone needs a perfect match that ain't it!
OMG really? Mine was a perfect match. What color did you ended using?
do you think the color will match Tesla model 3 performance rims?
(not the one mentioned in the video (21 inch), but the black matte mentioned in the description (20 inch ) )
asking for a friend
Sorry I’m not sure about M3P.
I can’t find the paint you used anywhere. Do you have an alternative?
Update: I called the company and they discontinued the carbon mist paint.
That’s a bummer. Did they provide an alternative color?
your video is very helpful! , Is the carbon mist paint color 100% the same as the original?
thanks for uploading the video !
No it’s a shade off from the 21” Uberturbine but very close. Try it in a small area.
@@SlowAsianDriver thank you ! i will do !
How has the color you picked held up over time? Would you still choose that color? I just curbed mine this morning…😖
Sorry to hear. Zero issue with my repair…wife curbed up another wheel the other day. 🤦🏻♂️
@@SlowAsianDriver I bet you couldn't wait to say that about your wife. LOL. But for real, how was the color match and now that it's been a year, still looking good (even after repairing from your wife's curb rash)? LOL
Good news is the color held up just fine…the bad news all 4 wheels are curbed up. 🤣
Thanks for sharing! I could not get Rustoleum metallic carbon mist anywhere, local stores or Amazon. Any suggestions?
I got mine at Hone Depot.
If my wife curbs the wheels I get to put it in the special place. I have really clean wheels now.
😂
I would apply wax to the paint to protect it.
Good point.
Can you get a MY LR boost vs MYP roll races?
40-70mph
I’ve done it with my neighbor and there’s almost no difference.
@@SlowAsianDriver that's what I figured. Thank you
Honestly, unless you just want to have the fastest (which I do), the LR+AB is a better value.
My wife is a better driver than me, actually she is better at pretty much everything.. anyway.. as soon as we got our new Model S with the amazing 21 inch turbine wheels, I was nagging her everytime she took the car to NOT CURB THE WHEELS since she drives close to the curbs sometimes. One of those days I was driving home with my wife, and just as I mentioned how much I love these wheels, I hit the biggest and most wierdly shaped curb of my life, it might as well have been a skyscraper. There is now a 1-inch thick cutout in the rim and I am not to ever mention anything about wheels or curbs to my wife again.
😂😂😂 yep that seems about right with most of us men.
What is the model number of the Rust Oleum?
It’s called Carbon Mist and is in the video. It’s readily available at Home Depot and Lowe’s.
Why not pull wheel cover off to avoid scratching it ???
Because these are actual rims and don’t have wheel covers.
Too funny 🤣🤣😂🤣😂
🤣
