Big Boy Diesel, good name for the 300SD in the W126 body. And it grew even a little bit more to an even bigger boy diesel starting then 1986 model line and became the 300SDL with more horsepower, same motor displacement but with up to 6 cylinders, and into the longer wheelbase version of the W126. The 300SDL lasted thru '87. Then during '90, an even more powerful 350SDL. Then starting in '91, that 350 was offered in the shorter wheelbase version, which this '84 300SD is, as well as the longer version. Unfortunately, some of the 350s bent rods all of a sudden at around 50-60K miles, then had to be redone, then lasted a long time like a diesel Benz should. I saw a '91 350SD on Craigslist once that had a total of 360K miles on it. Motor bent rods after it first 60K then had to get re-done. After that, the motor lasted 300K miles like a charm. I know of another person in my area who has a '90 350SDL w/230K miles on it and it runs & starts right up like a charm. That 350 was such an awesome engine. Too bad it had that common problem; and it was the only one that did. I think that Mercedes purposely underrated its horsepower by a little bit at 134, which is higher than the '81-5 SD, but a little lower than the '86-7 SDL. But the 350 was much torquier and had more acceleration. And after all these years, I still wouldn't mind having a 350SD or SDL myself. But that would mean doing a little extra investigation on its engine's history.
You need to do lash valves adjustment every 12 000mls, replace all the vacuum actuators, and check the doors latches, replace there rubbers only. This engine should have 15w40 or thicker. When you idle on a hot engine , you have to have at list 2 bars oil pressure. Also you need to do engine purch with Liqui Moly
I have not seen any problem with the oil viscosity. The service on the sticker from the door was fine. What is important is what the owner's manual says. (Summary of the operating instructions on the last page to quickly find what is recommended.) The only thing I saw as a problem in the video was the "preglow indicator lamp" in the dashboard. (Turn key in steering lock to position “ 2”. Charge indicator and preglow indicator lamp must come on.The preglow process starts. When the preglow indicator goes out, the engine is ready for starting.) Apparently the "preglow indicator lamp" is defective.
5w40 synthetic is just fine for the OM617, also the oil pressure at idle can go as low as .5 bar if very warm and the oil cooler is open. As long as it jumps back up to 3 bar off idle its fine. They do need valve adjustments every ~15k miles.
Longest lasting Diesel (OM617) in the world and that's with the camshaft in the head red lining at 6.000 RPM still lasted longer than any other diesel. maybe Detroit should take notes or maybe not too arrogant for that. Probably should have done that 40 years ago.
Best car ever produced
whats better, sd or sdl?
