  • What are we doing today?
Where going to ride the train.
Do we know anyone who has ridden the train?
No this is the first time. Let's see what the experience is going to be.
I arrived at the meeting point for the 1916 train ride.
The message in the emails that you get sent sends you to a hyperlink, which is just off Disash Road, just off Rum Road.
You feel like you're in the middle of nowhere because you are.
Just over here is the railway line which is a small gauge railway line which is the Hijaz
    Railway.
The 1916 Railway experience is free when you buy the Jordan Pass.
If you were to purchase it through a travel agent and not the Jordan Pass it is 20JD for an adult and 10JD for a child.
Bookings do appear to be essential for this experience.
There seems to be a lot of paperwork involved, I linked it through my Jordan Pass. I received an email, and I replied to the email with the confirmation of the name and the date that I had chosen. I received a double confirmation email.
I've come to this space with my driver. My driver will drive to the other end which is the Rum Railway Station. There's another group of people who have hired their own car, if they leave their car here, we'll have to find out how they come back to collect it.
I'm about to go on the 1916 train journey, a re-enactment of the 1916 battle here on the Hijaz railway. It has to be remembered that a re-enactment of a battle is a reflection of an actual battle of actual people, dying during a struggle with the Ottomans. The Ottomans had been in Jordan for about 500 years (Google it to find out), before WWI. The Ottomans were turned out with the assistance of England and France.
It's important to be cognizant that in the late 1800s & early 1900s was the rise of Zionism within England and Europe. Coming out of WWI, when the Ottomans were expelled from this area. With the Sykes Pico agreement these Arab states were backstabbed, as they were not given what they had agreed to at the start of trying to remove the Ottomans.
Between WWI & WWII saw the rise of nationalism in a lot of countries Germany, Italy, and Spain, which led to World War II.
It's really important that where I'm standing is part of the world's history, its current borders, and politics. History is generated around the time of this WWI conflict. I'm hoping that this doesn't just glorify conflict. I hope there is some reflection on the actual meaning of this conflict, not just Disney-fing something that was such a catalyst that structured today's modern society. Now the world seems to be going in a similar direction with the rise of the right.
Our chariot has arrived. We are gathered & been given our numbers, I am number 39.
We're about to hop onto the train, flying the Turkish flag because we are the invaders as we are the Ottomans, about to be removed from the area. There is a warning about noises from the gunfire. For those who may be a bit sensitive maybe this isn't the ride for you.
I've decided that I'm going to sit here on the transport carriage and other people have gone into the passenger carriage.
It was a pretty realistic show, with about five different sites where the pan-Arabs attacks the Hijaz railway and the Ottomans before they finally went to the train. The pan-Arabs then took the prisoners to the tank. It took about 35-40 minutes for the train ride and the re-enactment, on the Ottoman train.
Visitors get back to their cars via Jeeps arranged by the organisers.
    Stay safe & happy travels
