- Join me on my First Mission in the @polychopofficial OH 58D Kiowa Warrior! This was conducted with a pre-build software package so audio and video will change between this and game launch.
The “theme” of this video is to capture the feel of one of my favorite simulators from my childhood- Jane’s Longbow Apache.
I flew the Kiowa Warrior in the US Army for 10 years and deployed to combat twice in this aircraft. I can say that this missions experience rivals any training I conducted in the Army.

Reminds me of the old days in service. Some of the best and most daring pilots I ever met were Task Force 160th and a few Vietnam holdovers when I first served. The machine was just an extension of their bodies. Always appreciated the support for this old grunt when I needed it.

Honestly, the AH-64 and OH-58 didn't really do much for me when they were first announced. I kinda thought "Eh, just some helicopters to putter around in, what's the fun in that?". But after the Ka-50 was my gateway helicopter drug, I realized the fun of helicopters, and watching Casmo videos really hits home how fun the missions can be, especially if you start coordinating between groups of players.
This and the mission on the server truly has to be made for Helo ops. Trying to run Grey Flag or Hoggit in Helis is just an unfun slog.
@@Cocokingable1 Agreed. It's one thing I really like about flying on the Rotorheads server for DCS. It's all helicopter specific, and while there are some roles for planes, it's generally to strike a target being lased by a helo, or to take our enemy air defenses or fighter aircraft that the helos can't really combat themselves, at least not easily.
You gotta show us a smoke grenade-chuck out the door.

I was honestly surprised the Chinook got the green light. I figured it was going to be a Blackhawk for sure. Hopefully, it'll be next.

Very nice content, Casmo! Bit sad about the shortcomings of DCS when you see those tanks not even react to your attack, none of them seeking cover in the trees etc. Also makes me wish they had some depth of field blurring going on in the game. Great channel anyway, keep it up :)
Depth of field blurring is a lens effect that only occurs on cameras. Your eye muscles will constantly adjust for the distances required. If not you need glasses and then they will still adjust 😉
@@svenborchert1122 well sure I know what it is but still they should have the effect in dcs is all I’m saying. All those cinematic shots would look loads better

I love the grease pencil crosshairs in the cockpit. Very much "It good enough, and we don't have to spend a few million dollars for a targeting system."
Also, with the Kiowa Warrior and the Apache, time for the Firebirds scene recreations.
Can you make a video sorting through how each task for the KW would be done? Like CCA, SCAR, security, and other tasks? Seems like a lot of us, myself included, are a bit confused on them.

The kiowa warrior looks cool, but I plan on getting the apache during the summersale. Who knows, if I really like it maybe I'll buy this one too!
Looks like the Targets in DCS are doing just what the targets are doing in Ukraine... just sit there for a moment, abandon the vehicle, and then run like hell.

Had the opportunity to go on a familiarization/incentive flight when I was deployed overseas on the Kiowa! Hell of an experience!

Out of curiosity, why did you go with the rapid deploy skids instead of the standard skids? Not that I am complaining I think they look better personally and if that is the only reason, that's fine by me. I cannot wait to get my hands on this bird. I got to fly in them when I was deployed to Bosnia back in 2002 as part of SFOR. The feeling of being in it was more like you strapped it on and wore rather than get inside and fly. It was great fun and more power than the OH-58C that I had flown in previously.

The grass in the beginning steals the show! Those armored vehicles never stood a chance. The Phantom is really cool, but there is something about that is upcoming module that is so much more exciting. Can't wait.
Helicopters are just an entirely different level of fun. The sneaking along tree lines and rivers really makes for experiencing the map in a completely different way.

I know I'm alone here but I have been anticipating this module over all the other ones by a huge margin.... Really excited to see more from you and crossing my fingers that the physics are good and not game-y like helicopters tend to be in flight sims.

They even put the sophisticated grease pencil targeting system on there. I love it. I cant wait to fly these, I'll make 021 fly again.
Shame there will be no level of AI comms or coordination that will make the single player player experience anywhere near this much fun ☹️
This is a real immersion simulation, we’re seeing interoperability with different units and a clean job by the developers and players. Damm good job!!!
I hope that ED and Polychop are able to work on the datalink network for the Kiowa and the Apache.

For a logic standpoint, what is the point of having the KW go up in this mission? Why not just send two apachies like they ended up doing? I really want to do a mission in the KW with overhead drones and all that but I am stuggeling to find a scenario where its not just better to use an apachie. Any Ideas?
You’ve fallen into the trap of DCS where every aircraft costs the same and is in unlimited supply.

The oh58d is the helicopter that gave me desire to begin helicopter sim on DCS, i already play a lot with the f/a-18, the oh58 will be my first heli :)

Love the Viper and Hog, as well as logistics in the Huey and eventually the Chinook. The Apache just didn't really do it for me but the KW looks like a fun mission set.

Thinking of the ISIS insurgency in Mozambique, very bad dudes, couple of these bad boys would clear up that problem real quick, damn. Apparently the bad guys there use the forests for cover and hiding, that might make it tricky, though. Awesome video, Casmo!

Sorry Casmo, I couldn't seem to hit that 'Like' button hard enough on this video.
For those of you that were questioning why you'd get or want the Kiowa Warrior if you already have the Apache - this mission is a PRIME example of the almost symbiotic "Hunter/Killer" partnership between the KW and the Apache.
The KWs strength is not in its ability to carry mass amounts of ordnance, it's in its ability to locate targets from a distance - day or night, in practically any weather a helo can fly in - masked by terrain or obstructions, and coordinate effects on targets in real-time from a multitude of external platforms, including fast air, using the MMS to gets obs on.
I'm not a rotorhead by any means - I like my aircraft with fixed wings - but now that the Kiowa is "Two Weeks (TM)" away, Western rotor-ops is about to get stood on its head.
In real life, definitely, but in a game where every Apache can have FCR I wonder whether you'll have to 'force' yourself to limit the Apaches to make bringing the Kiowa worth it Vs another Apache?
Don't be me wrong I think the Kiowa is awesome and love this module - will almost certainly buy it ❤
@@AhSoul In DCS terms, it will depend on the complexity of the mission really. Those who make missions where everything in front of you is a bad guy probably won't see much difference.
Those that make, or prefer, realistic missions/milsim are likely to see a lot of value in a KW. For example, on a mixed battlefield, an FCR can't tell the difference between an enemy tracked vehicle and a friendly one. Apache has to expose itself a lot more than a KW with an MMS to VID a target.
@@Cailean556 yup good point. We play a lot of Pretense and the downside of that is you generally know a zone is hostile and you won't find friendlies there. We probably need to find some more realistic scenarios
@@AhSoul Not if the mission designer has any say, can always remove that from the loadout options and force you to fly without FCR

Pretty cool watching this… I was in 3/4 CAV in Hawaii towards the end of the 90’s and early 2K’s. We had 2 Air Troops ( B and C) that flew these. D Troop was Maintenance, Apache was 19D’s etc. We lost our SCO LTC. McMahon along with a pilot and maintainer in Afghanistan

I wonder what this mission how have looked if they were Apaches instead of Kiowa? Easier, harder, no different, quicker, slower…with everything being equal. As someone who actually flew both your take is very unique and holds more weight than others. All I can speak to is DCS World and the Apache would have been easier for me only because I have so much more experience with it over the Kiowa. And that 30mm cannon on the swivel. Just curious if your opinion
