I'm confused on the logic here. They are taking a movie based on a Danish story and puting it in Norway...in the World Showcase when it should be in Magic Kingdom where all of the Princess based stuff is...or maybe even Hollywood Studios because it's a movie...but Epcot is supposed to be about the future, technology, world culture, etc. You're telling me Disney doesn't have the money to do more than re-theming an existing ride? I can see why they'd want to cash in on Frozen, but I just don't think people will be crazy about Frozen like they are now for more than it takes the next Disney Princess movie to come out...remember Tangled?
Just found out today about Frozen. I enjoyed the movie but I don't think the ride belongs in Epcot - MK maybe - but not Epcot, and especially not to replace Maelstrom.
Disney's just slowly ruining the place with all these updates. First Snow White, a classic, gets taken away, then Test Track gets turned into a complete dark and too futuristic thing, and now their taking away Maelstrom. We've got to stop them here, if they take away Maelstrom, I don't know what I'll do. Like if you think Maelstrom should stay open. We've got to show Disney that this ride is a loved classic, and it's just as important as Splash Mountain, and Pirates, and all those other awesome rides.
Andrew Petersen or 20,000 leagues under the sea.. this isn't the first time I have been disappointed by a disney ride change.. I expect it wont be the last either :(
I agree. On top of that there was no reason to close Maelstrom, when Disney has plenty of land to build Frozen somewhere else with closing something quests were fond of.
I will be so gutted if the Frozen ride replaces this one before Easter-time next year. That's when I'm going back and I'd love to go on this one last time.
I remember riding in the back with my cousin the very first time we rode this ride. As the thing went back wards towards the waterfall we looked at each other and said, "Oh crap." We sighed with relief when it stopped and went forward. Since it was our first time on this ride we had no idea what to expect. Other than that scare we loved the ride.
I remember going to Disney World with my parents for the first time back in 05, and we got on this ride. It was ok but the funny part was when we got off and they were gonna show the movie...but everyone walked right through the theater and out the door lol
RIP Maelstrom. Hello Frozen! I hope to god the new ride is similar to the Mexico ride in which Disney characters are added to the real setting instead of using the fictional country of Arendelle. Don't get be wrong, I love Frozen, but it might be nice if you don't disrespect Norway anymore than you already have with this new decision. Simply having a Norway ride with Frozen characters in it, not a Frozen ride that has nothing to do with Norway except that Arandelle is based off Norway.
went to Epcot last week, with frozen ever after being a 120 minute wait, fortunately I got a fastpass for Friday. i'll be riding (and judging) in my head to toe maelstrom gear :(
Dont worry, we've all had those kind of moments, when i was 9 i was scared of pretty much everything at disney except its a small world, now im ok with every other ride but that one is the only one that scares me.
Nothing like facing the absolute most terrifying moment of my early childhood. Absolutely petrifying for me at 5 years old. Those trolls appeared in my nightmares for at least another 5 years. My parents were like "it's not scary" but I cried and screamed and we were in the first row! The scariest thing ever as a child. I'm going to face my fear this year though.
I got scared on this ride when I went on it last year. I didn't know it would go down backwards at some part it would be cool if they made a Frozen ride I love that movie.
That's what they're planning to do, but if they do end up shutting this ride down, they're just ruining Disney World by closing down all these classic rides.
It is sad that they closed some of the old rides down. but that's how life goes there building new rides for this century were in. and Frozen is a good movie
***** But what about Walt wanting the EPCOT park to stay character free? I can understand you can't fight progress, but I feel that a Frozen ride would do better in the Magic Kingdom and perhaps just a revamping of the older Malestrom, which there is no denying needs a new coat of paint. EPCOT in general has been needing a renaissance for quite some time.
I can't believe that this is some of ya'lls favorite ride in all of Epcot. I've never rode we It and I'm glad I haven't. I'm upset about the whole Frozen thing but come on.. all of Epcot? Really? Over Test Track or Soarin'?
People will forget this attraction now that it's been replaced with, "Frozen Ever After", boat ride. My parents have done this attraction twice. When I went to Disney World in 2013 when it was still open we diddn't get this in because of the Illumation Fireworks. Let's hope Frozen Ever After is better since i've never done this.
This ride scared the absolute crap out of me! I hate rides with dark caves and boats and water. I was a young teenager and my parents made me go on it...they said I was too young to stay alone. I'm embarrassed to say I screamed so much, especially with that thing with the evil eyes! I didn't even wait for the ride to come to a complete stop...I jumped right out the second I saw the platform. I was a shaking mess! Parents were pulling their kids out of line! I wish I could say I was lying.
And if they would ever add Greece, I can imagine an Underworld ride (not a Hercules theme) and your on the war ship right after the battle you go straight to mount Olympus to go to the Underworld and battles off mythical creatures and Hades before they breaks free and takes over the world. It is a cross of splash mountain and maelstrom.
I didn't ride this yet. It looks like a great way to rest and cool down for a while before stepping back out into the Great Hot Oven known as the Sun lol.... :)
Hello Undercover Tourist! I am going to Orlando Florida in two weeks, and would like to know what rides get busy quickly, if you reply it would be much appreciated, Many Thanks, Hollie :) P.s Also what rides are fun to go on.
Oh my goodness. Tell me about it. They went and ruined Imagination. When I was 5, I made my parents take me (and my sister, who had to tag along) on Imagination 3 times in a row. I loved Figment so much.
I was ok unless i sat near the ends lol. sometimes that troll in the water got a little too close. also in the end by the oil rig, there was a burst of water next to the boat that I never expected no matter how many times I've been on it. Oh and I always thought the boat was backing up too far by that cave and I was like ok you can stop now. Ok no? oh now! no? uh oh
Im glad to see one of my all time favorites is stil lhere. I was a bit of a tomboy and wanted to be a rare female viking after this lol. Ahh just a small piece of the good old epcot untouched by rennovation for future enjoyment. RIP Horizons, World Of Motion, Wonders of Life, Food Rocks, Kitchen Caberet, River of Time, The REAL Imagination ride, Seabase Alpha, The old Spaceship earth, The old Universe of energy......
XD I remember going on this once with our friend who'd never been on it before. We got up to where they have the fake-out drop... Sister: Heeeere we go!! Friend: ......What do you MEAN "Here we go??" :D We got him pretty good.
It just got confirmed this ride will be closing oct 5 to re theme it in frozen this sucks and I'm going there oct 15! I don't even get to ride it once more :(
Hah, I'm pretty sure they've Disneyed it up since then. I loved the trolls as a kid, but it's more educational and less trolly now. There are still a couple of drops, but I believe they added a turn-around area where you learn about Norwegian culture, and take the next drop forwards instead of backwards. No more "Back, back! O-ver-the-falls!"
I remember that I refused to go on this ride for years because I got scared when it did the drops when I was little...then I went on it in 2008 and realized I was being a baby...
The Frozen ride better be like Spiderman/Transformers or Harry Potter and the Escape from Grignotts, or something other than a Dumbo ride or an Omnimover. Or else, I will only watch the ride at RUclips since riding it may not be worth it.
What the heck was that? [I am a passholder to Disneyland Resort, CA. And here comes my complaining.]This is why I'm starting to think Disneyland, CA was a fluke. Disney World seems to be filled with generic mediocre(sp?) non-Disney rides like this. The only place that I'd like to visit at Disney World is Magic Kingdom park just to see how it compares with Disneyland, CA. Every time I look up a different Disney park(meaning, a park other than Disneyland, Ca or Magic Kingdom-like parks) They are full of dumb rides like this. There are usually only about two rides that are good and the rest of the attractions are usually something lame like a place to watch a movie. A good example of this is California Adventure(which I still visit regularly and like). It was full of junk like this. Superstar Limo lasted only 11 months(changed to Monsters Inc. 2005), Bountiful Valley farm(a catapillar machinery museum)which was quickly changed to Bugs Land, Golden Dreams which is now the Little Mermaid ride; a few small rides were changed from California themed rides to Disney-themed rides like Orange Stinger--> Silly Symphony Swings; and the only good rides were Tower of Terror and California Screamin'. Only about 11 years after its opening, DCA got a gigantic fixing because people were complaining it didn't have a Disney feel, and most of the attractions were duds. Every time I see WDW attractions and parks like this, I see the same crappyness that DCA had. It seems like Disney doesn't put enough thought into the parks and attractions they open now. I bet if Walt were still alive, WDW and the other parks would be amazing. I am not trying to attack Disney World because I have loyalty to Disneyland Park, CA, but I am voicing my unhappiness at how the Walt Disney Company executes their non-Magic Kingdom-themed parks and attractions. This ride I just viewed, is an example of what I just ranted and raved about. It set me off, sorry to spam. Thank you to people who just read this poorly spelled comment monster I just wrote.
Your comment made me laugh. While we do ride this every time we go, we do it mostly for the "What the heck was that?!" effect. LOL!! The first time we rode it, we were debating whether or not to watch the movie, and a man passed us and said, "I didn't understand the ride, and I don't think the movie will help." We agreed and left. I watched this video specifically to watch the movie, and I now agree with him... the movie didn't help. haha! However, I do understand the nostalgia for the ride, since we do ride it every time. I can't say that I will be devastated if they replace it, though. I just wish they would replace it with some sort of exciting ride. With it being a 'Frozen' ride, though, I bet it's a slow, dark ride. :(
I may be the only person on Earth that really LIKED Superstar Limo!!! I am not ashamed! haha. But, I like rides like Maelstrom because they're so random! I love that you can walk through Epcot and find these small attractions quietly tucked away within their respective counties. Many people don't even see or think about them (another example: Gran Fiesta Tour boat ride inside the Mexico Pavilion). But anyway, this attraction is rumored to be closing down soon to make way for a Frozen ride.
What I think you don't know is that this ride is INCREDIBLY old and outdated. It never had the popularity that many other attractions did and just took up space and occupied peoples' time at Epcot. In my opinion, it's basically filler between more interesting country pavilions like Mexico, Morocco, China, etc. The Frozen attraction will be a MUCH needed improvement.
I think it has a cult following... I rode it just two weeks ago, and I'm glad I did. I will miss it. I feel like a Frozen themed ride is too commercial for the world showcase. I would have liked to have seen a more interesting, more *coherent* ride that showed history and/or culture. I'll keep an open mind, and I'm sure I'll ride it, but putting something like another Peter Pan, Snow White, or Winnie the Pooh dark ride seems like a total waste.
I just feel like that wouldn't be the argument if Frozen itself wasn't so commercially successful. Epcot pavilions already have a couple of rides and many meet and greets. With some thought, however, I hope that they find a way to balance out the Frozen attraction with some kind of insert on the culture/history of Norway, sort of like how they did with the Mexico pavilion. The ride is about Donald and Goofy (I think), but the rest of the pavilion recalls Aztec architecture/Mexican singers etc. I also don't believe it will be a dark ride, perhaps some dark parts, but I'm thinking it would be more along the lines of The Little Mermaid ride since the tone of the film, in a visual sense, is very bright.
kiwisoup i mean that's all well and good but they could have made the actual ride part a bit longer. the ride itself seemed fun. I'd rather be going through an educational ride than be sitting in a theater watching a video if i'm at disney
I wish each country at Epcot had their own ride. That would be great!! Love this underrated ride.
This is my favorite ride at Epcot. They CANNOT close this!!!! I at least hope they keep selling the Maelstrom Shirt AND that Movie on DVD/Blu-Ray.
They probly will
Same their replacing it with frozen ride and it makes me want to stop the director from making the movie
Thankfully I'll be in Disney World the last week Maelstrom is open. Gotta get those last few rides in!
Dear Disney - please do NOT take away Maelstrom. It's a classic and I loved it as a kid and still do as an adult.
Got bad news, bud.
Just found out today about Frozen. I enjoyed the movie but I don't think the ride belongs in Epcot - MK maybe - but not Epcot, and especially not to replace Maelstrom.
I think it belongs in Epcot just because of the whole nationality theme Epcot has
Looooooove this ride! Used to work here the male cast members at Norway and Germany were always so gorgeous.
I will miss the Maelstrom but I look forward to seeing what they do with Frozen.
R.I.P. Maelstrom
1988-2014

You didn't even mention Mr. Toads Wild Ride, that was the beginning of the downfall

thank you kingdom keepers for letting me know about the ride!
I will be so gutted if the Frozen ride replaces this one before Easter-time next year. That's when I'm going back and I'd love to go on this one last time.
Mr Grumpyface
Unfortunately it is. Maelstrom closes in October.
I heard sometime next month in October.
Yep Madeline Corzine it's last day of operation is Oct. 5
Oh no :( Gutted, but thanks for letting me know.
I hate to break it to you, but it is. :( They announced it earlier this week or something. Maelstrom has less than a month left...
OMG, do it!! It's so much fun. You get to use these really cool gadgets to design your coaster!!
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE RIDE! DON'T REPLACE THIS WITH FROZEN! PLEASE!
This aged badly 😢
I remember going to Disney World with my parents for the first time back in 05, and we got on this ride. It was ok but the funny part was when we got off and they were gonna show the movie...but everyone walked right through the theater and out the door lol
love this ride!!! sooo good!!!!
There's a rumour that Disney's looking at retheming this ride into a ride based off of Frozen! Personally, I think that's a good idea.
So happy this is becoming a Frozen ride!
bristau I’m sad

There originally was going to be a Japanese Carousel of Progress-like attraction, a Rhine River Cruise, and an Italian Gondola ride.
Nothing like facing the absolute most terrifying moment of my early childhood. Absolutely petrifying for me at 5 years old. Those trolls appeared in my nightmares for at least another 5 years. I love this ride, good video
me encanta este paseo , buen video
I really hope EPCOT keeps this ride and movie and the end. I would hate to see it go commercial with a "Frozen" theme.
I got scared on this ride when I went on it last year. I didn't know it would go down backwards at some part it would be cool if they made a Frozen ride I love that movie.

Agree with updating, buy some rides should stay forever -- like Splash or It's A Small World...
Arman,ITS A SMALL WORLD SHOULD GO BYE BYE.
IM watching you-

i went on this three days ago to escape the rain and ended up really enjoying it :D
2:51 Disappear! Disappear!
Totally. They intended to but many of the rides never happened sadly :(
yeah its like my fav ride but its short

No maelstrom was where it was at! I loved this ride so much it was my favorite ride at Epcot just because it was my first ever Disney ride.
This ride is very under rated
Once when I was there the wait time for this ride was 60 minutes. I like this ride, but I'd never wait an hour for it :P
Hey undercovertourist do you have to stick around and watch the movie afterwards? I rode it once but can't remember. I'd rather skip out on it! haha
This ride scared the absolute crap out of me! I hate rides with dark caves and boats and water. I was a young teenager and my parents made me go on it...they said I was too young to stay alone. I'm embarrassed to say I screamed so much, especially with that thing with the evil eyes! wow when the ride was over i was like "omg! those are some nice animatronics!" and then i was like "oh, those are people." LOL
And if they would ever add Greece, I can imagine an Underworld ride (not a Hercules theme) and your on the war ship right after the battle you go straight to mount Olympus to go to the Underworld and battles off mythical creatures and Hades before they breaks free and takes over the world. I'm always shocked by how short this ride is. The line isn't worth it without a Fast Pass.
Cris Mess the line is short for this ride like 10 min or 5 it’s worth that
Hello Undercover Tourist! I am going to Orlando Florida in two weeks, and would like to know what rides get busy quickly, if you reply it would be much appreciated, Many Thanks, Hollie :) P.s Also what rides are fun to go on.
R.I.P Maelstrom.

I do. The movie must be over 20 years old now.
I was ok unless i sat near the ends lol. sometimes that troll in the water got a little too close. also in the end by the oil rig, there was a burst of water next to the boat that I never expected no matter how many times I've been on it. It has a few very mild. Nothing where you get wet. One is forward and one backwards.
There's two VERY tiny ones...like the size if the one on Pirates of the Caribbean.
So did they finally shut down Disney Quest and put some of the stuff at Epcot?
XD I remember going on this once with our friend who'd never been on it before. We got up to where they have the fake-out drop...
Sister: Heeeere we go!!
Friend: ......What do you MEAN "Here we go??"
:D We got him pretty good.
As a guy who is afraid of drops on rides, does this ride have any drops on it?
Goodbye culture, hello commercialism. Gotta bank in on that Frozen cashcow while they can.
It just got confirmed this ride will be closing oct 5 to re theme it in frozen this sucks and I'm going there oct 15! I don't even get to ride it once more :(
Whoops! Looks like they're still there! I hadn't watched the video, yet.
I will miss it.
This is by FAR one of the weirdest rides I've ever been on...
It's OK. I freaked out on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. I was already in my 20's, so...yeah, don't even worry about it :)
October 5th 2014 is the officially closing date they just announced :(
Ive never heard if this ride. Is it in the country norway or what?
@hadla
....... You dont like thrill rides do you?
3:36 Hidden Mickey shadow in the leaves.
are you sure?? i can't find it
I feel actual pain over the fact that this ride is closing.
what was this ride about? Never been on it :D!
Since Marvel is now owned by Disney, it'd be cool if this ride had Thor, Odin, and Loki make appearances haha
I remember that I refused to go on this ride for years because I got scared when it did the drops when I was little...then I went on it in 2008 and realized I was being a baby...
do u have to do the theatre part or no?
The Frozen ride better be like Spiderman/Transformers or Harry Potter and the Escape from Grignotts, or something other than a Dumbo ride or an Omnimover. Or else, I will only watch the ride at RUclips since riding it may not be worth it.
I road this when I was 7 and when it went backwards I almost shat my self
Ugh the wait for this ride almost drove us crazy, but the ride was OK
Now closed as of today
DISAPPEAR! DISAPPEAR! DISAPPEAR!
kdawg7736 Back, back. Over the falls!! MWAHAHAHAHA!
there are no drops in this ride right?
Anh Nguyen there is
If I am "Dauntless" enough to go on an 150- foot drop, I should be "Dauntless" enough to go 28-feet! DIVERGENT REFERENCE!!!
dose this have hills in it
Looks like its Norwegian-themed Pirates of the Carribean ride.
Malestrom has the worst seating in all disney property.
Where did that movie halfway through the video come from after they got off the ride?
@Cutegurl111792 Its Actually in disney
I'd love to go on this, but it is probably a "FROZEN" ride now ;(
Sadly, that's what it's going to be starting in 2016 :(
Now that Disney owns Marvel.....will this be changed to a Thor, maybe even Avengers ride?
is it still open?!?!?!?!
elizabeth nesland Unfortunately, it is not! -- Tad, Undercover Tourist
***** awww I was looking forward to going on it this Friday
Nope. Frozen took over.
I was gonna ride all these rides, but we didn't have time.
Removed.
This is a nice ride but it portrays Norway completely wrong :P
I almost pooped when my dad and sister made me go on the Tower of Terror. I was maybe 8, and I slugged my dad a good one when we got out.

Captain America should have replaced this ride
6 people were eaten by the polar bears
@meowzymcdirmit OH! Thank you! XD!
Haha! Trolls are number one!
@theory24 norway.
@theory24 vikings and trolls. Plus norway.
i can see why this ride is loved but it's definitely dated. it plays out like a 1970's walt disney educational show.
It's in the World Showcase of Epcot, not the Magic Kingdom or Hollywood Studios...that's what the World Showcase is about.
kiwisoup i mean that's all well and good but they could have made the actual ride part a bit longer. the ride itself seemed fun. I'd rather be going through an educational ride than be sitting in a theater watching a video if i'm at disney
Jazzy
