Daisy Baldi’s fiancé I don’t even remember the three headed troll because I would know to not look at it. I loved the ride except for that part and the drop was my favorite “thrill” ride as a kid
I'm really sad they are replacing this with a Frozen attraction, even though I like Frozen. Isn't the point of Epcot to showcase different real world cultures?
No need for thanks. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Frozen may not be a bad idea, just not at Epcot or taking out a ride based on culture and replacing it with fantasy in a educational park. That is wrong.
it is wrong i totally agree with you but Frozen is a wonderful idea just put it in Magic Kingdom just like i hated to see Snow Whites Scary Adventures go i have to see this one go by Maelstrom we all love and will miss you.
This, the Mexico ride, and the American Adventure show are by far my favorite parts of the world showcase, and it's a real shame it's being taken down for Disney frozen hype. Frozen should be in New Fantasyland not in the world showcase
Bobby Vollman I Know Not only was it one of the only few rides that World Showcase had but it probably was the best one. I haven't been to Epcot in a long time but what else was there besides that and the Mexico boat ride. I guess if you like the more common boat ride with the singing you might like that one better but those animatronic trolls and when you go down the plunge to the oil rigs and it's freezing in there just gives me a nostalgic feeling that unfortunately will never feel again
I've seen both and I can honestly say that Maelstrom is better. While Frozen Ever After is technically superior, what really makes Maelstrom is the film at the end about Norway's history. It's part of the whole point of EPCOT: teaching visitors about other countries. While Arendelle is based off of Norway, the Norweigan representation is said to be the worst representation in the movie. Generally speaking, aside from the fact that the overall aesthetic of the film is Scandinavian, there's really very little true Norwegian stuff. Architecture, music, characters, practices and even folklore from Norway to Finland from the early middle ages to the early 20th century combine very tightly, everyone speaks English with American accents, and in the end, the film is not representative of any given place or time period, only that it's definitely before the automobile was invented and well before the construction of the first railroads. Furthermore, looking at Frozen Ever After, it's a Disneyland ride, not an EPCOT one. RIP Maelstrom; I will miss you.
I totally agree with you the Maelstrom was made specially to highlight historical stuff about Norway while the new frozen has nothing historical in it at all other than taking place in Norway but thats still not a good reason to replace this ride over that.
+Daniel Moeller Yes, I also thought that Maelstrom was a great ride but, whenever I rode it, some people complained about it that it was too short and every time I rode it, there were little kids crying at the trolls part so maybe they must have gotten rid of it for a good reason.
disney trying to attract more kids to epcot, the ride had no connection with anything disney, although i miss it, I understand what disney had to do :(
It's kind of a shame they're turning Epcot's countries into... movie-themed attractions. The idea is supposed to be exhibitions of each country, like a World Fair, not 'here's this Disney movie that takes place in this country!'
@Bridget Fullam I never minded characters from films being featured in subtle places in each of the countries, but making rides completely about the films is definitely outside the original vision of EPCOT
This was such an odd ride but it was probably the scariest one for me because I didn't know what was going on half the time even with the narration. Also, if Disney wanted to make one of their franchises into a ride, they should've just made a Thor themed ride since he's from Norse mythology :P
+Timothy Yang A Thor ride would have been awesome... Better than Frozen at least except 1. Before Disney bought Marvel, Universal Studios claimed rights that no theme park in the Orlando area after they built their Incredible Hulk ride 2. A boat ride wouldn't really make sense for Thor (And it doesn't really for Frozen either) Good Idea though!
I was so sad when I heard this ride would close to be replaced with Frozen because these were one of the weirder cooler rides that I've actually been on, disney execs are ruining Walt Disneys dream because they're filling everything up with already well known mainstream stuff
It's what kids are loving right now. And In reality is it for us adults? Or to form memories with our children? Because some of my fondest memories were with my father at Disneyland because he could be that fun careless guy there. Instead of the raging asshole at home. Lol
77legocreator Besides, Walt said the park should always change, because it will never be completed. I understand the loss of an awesome ride, but the change will make a lot of new smiles. Plus, you can be like a senior Disney goer, and boast about how "you remember when that used to be Maelstrom". It'll take some getting used to...
***** Lol I'm not angry at Disney, I dont hold grudges but I just wanted to ride the Maelstrom one more time cause i rode it when i was a lot younger so.... yeah
An important thing to understand is that many rides in Disney, especially in Epcot, have sponsors so Disney can afford to keep rides open. When the sponsors stop funding the ride, it usually does not end well. This was seen with the ride Horizons that was in Epcot (which closed after GE stop sponsoring) as well as the Wonders of Life pavilion (sponsored by MetLife until they dropped it, and the pavilion had to close its attractions). Each of the country pavilions in World Showcase are funded by the country they represent. Recently, Norway stopped funding the pavilion. In order to prevent closing the area entirely, Disney needed a way for people to keep coming back (and draw larger crowds to Epcot in general), so what is disneys current huge money maker that happens to take place in an area that fits Norway? Frozen. So it may not fit in Epcot or World Showcase per say, and it may not be everyone's favorite option, but Disney knows what they're doing
Technically that's not true. Disney owns most countries except 3. The reason those aren't funded is because those countries wanted to make sure they were represented well.
I understand this, but how is it that an almost trillion-dollar company can’t afford to keep funding a ride like Maelstrom? Surely it wouldn’t be so much as to financially jeopardize the company, right? Like I said, I do understand why they have sponsors, I just think it’s hard to believe that Disney wouldn’t be able to afford paying for an attraction like maelstrom.
@@STSGuitar16 The main problem is that Norway only agreed to doing a ride about them if and only if it was/is very accurate. This ride is let’s say very Americanized. A lot of these mistakes are just flat out wrong and show that Disney didn’t fully understand Norway when making or having this ride. Stuff like there is no giant Bigfoot thing in Norse Methology. Also, I’m from Canada and can tell you polar bears don’t live in caves or in the dark because it’s a huge threat to their well being and they can’t see very well. Even the video had American music to it, a kid that had no parents and they didn’t teach kids how to Viking fight until they were older not 5 years old. That and other stuff. Disney was also given narrations and other stuff which the drowned out with loud noises and random waterfall things. Norway wasn’t just pulling the plug on paying for stuff but was down right offended by the changes made without their permission on a ride about them. I’m sorry but Disney never gave an f about Norway. They didn’t learn much about Norway. I learned more in school in Canada then that entire ride and video. Not only that it was/is accurate. Norway agreed to the Frozen ride and made sure it was accurate. Before that they were about to pull the plug on everything. No videos, no maps, no drawings, no paintings, no sculptures, no pavilion and no rides. They wanted nothing to do with Disney. Disney wanted to change their history and mythology into what they wanted and what they thought people wanted to see and would pay for.
I'm only saying this because Epcot is one of few adult oriented parks disney has for most of us to enjoy. They already have a meet and greet there why do they need more?
Kenzie Gufaw They don't and the ones they do have belong in Fantasyland. They are sick for ruining the Disney legacy by converting these parks into places only for children! It's like they have no idea who Walt Disney was.
@@PeruvianPotato *[I don’t mind the Frozen ride, but I do have to agree it has a better place in Fantasyland than Epcot. I just wish people would shut up about Frozen Ever After replacing this ride.]*
See this is why i love channels like this. You guys preserve the history of rides and attractions (good or bad) and let everyone see the evolution of an area such as EPCOT. So thank you for doing what you do!
This was a ride I highly enjoyed as a kid for how modest it was, it had a lot of heart and a nice comfortable atmosphere. The technology was nothing special and it wasn't new and polished but it had a lot of charm. I've only ever been to the park once and figured that when I went at some point in the future it would be nice to ride it again since I had such fond memories of it. Sad to see it's gone.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm sad it's closing. Walt intended Epcot to be a worlds fair. He wanted people of all nations to be able to come together and learn from each other and about each other. The loss of this ride is frustrating despite its lack of thrills. It was unique and educational and gave people a small glimpse of another culture. Frozen may be set in Norway...kind of...but the educational aspect will be sucked right out in favor of animated snow people and ice throwing princesses. I will definitely be avoiding the the hysteria of the next year or so. Farewell Maelstrom. You will be missed!!
+Chayson Dam yeah nemo is there, and it was a big mistake by Disney mixing themes, but you'd think they would have learnt from there mistakes, but they clearly haven't.
Hate to see this go away, I am Norwegian of Viking descent and enjoyed going through this ride. Although Disney does have a way of taking a creative license to make things more interesting to the average person. Hence the story of Frozen which is based on a Danish Fairy Tale written by Hans Christian Anderson who was of Danish descent. So I guess they lump all Scandinavians together and with the success of the movie Frozen just assume most people won't know the difference. I mean hey, Sven, Olaf sounds Norwegian doesn't it.
You know they will. The ride was not about the thrill, It was about the culture. All but three original Epcot ride are still around. Two have been changed slightly, but still run. Epcot was built PERFECT the first time. They took out everything that was a fan favorite. Claimed high maintenance as the reason. BS! Replaced it with crap! Nothing against Frozen, but Disney can take this idea and ...well...you get the idea.
Haha I agree with you, Frozen has no place in the Norway pavilion. I mean I can kinda see a little connection between them both but it's not gonna match what Maelstrom represented at all. But i'm curious as to how they'll pull it off.
wow! 7 years later here I am missing the Maelstrom. So I searched for it and got this video in the results. Oh my dear Maelstrom, gone but not forgotten.
They might as well call Disney World, Toddler World because eventually all the classic Disney rides will be removed and replaced by rides that are extremely baby-fied. I understand Disney has to change with the times but I thought Walt Disney intended for most of the attractions to cater to a general audience. Not just kids. Adults enjoy Disney World as well and should have attractions that cater to them too but at this rate, everything will turn into kiddie land. You can call me selfish all you want but the Disney company needs to understand that there are adults who enjoy Disney World as much as kids.
"I can't believe they're adding a Disney movie in Disney World! They might as well call it Disney World if all they're gonna add is Disney-related stuff!!" That's how your bitching sounds like
I grew up with this ride, I came to love Norway thanks partially to it. I will miss the wonder of Maelstrom and all its artistic flair that was such a ride.
I’m sad is gone. The Frozen ride isn’t bad, but you can’t beat Malestrom. Luckily as a children’s book writer/ illustrator I can put elements of the Malestrom into my children’s book about a tiny dragon ship with no mast, or sail that saves a little girl who fell into the water and is being carried away by the current.
In the future all rides will morph into video screens and rocking chairs. No one will comprehend moving past objects and classic attractions. Bring back horizons
What my 19 year old daughter said to me while watching this... "Okay. So there's a lot of hate going out towards this being changed to Frozen. I have been to Disney 25 times in my life and I'm only 19. Really the only thing that interested me about this ride was that it went backwards. That's it. Now when I was a kid I liked that it had the trolls, but I never understood why they were there until I learned about the myths as I got older. After a while though the ride got boring, and It really had no purpose. I thought the movie that was on afterwards explained Norway better then the ride did. I'm really glad they decided to change it. Now am I thrilled about the whole Frozen thing? No, but I am curious as to what they are going to do with it. Honestly what I do believe the company should have done was put Thor in there. Since he is actually a Norse Mythology god it would make sense. But I don't think that Frozen is going to "Shit on" this ride because One it's a movie so it can't shit on anything, and Two we don't even know what Disney has planed for it, and we are already criticizing it! I understand almost every teen, and adult are sick of Frozen, but complaining about this isn't going to make the Disney company change their minds. They want to make Epcot more appealing to kids. A lot of you are saying that Epcot wasn't ment for kids and the characters need to stay out of Epcot, but back when it first opened people complained that they weren't in the park! So really the whole "Characters should stay out of Epcot" argument is invalid. And Look what they did to the river boat ride in Mexico. I LOVE that ride, and I love the search for Donald as you go through. As a family when ever we are back there we always head there first. And hardly anyone complained when the other princesses were back in their countries. Also Epcot was supposed to be a place where people could actually live, but that idea got scrapped when Walt died, and they couldn't find the rest of the plans. I'm sorry if this was really long, but I'm really tired of people not realizing what is actually going on, and not understanding what Epcot was supposed to be. Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow. Not Here's the Countries, and Forget what Disney stands for!"
Me too I agree as well. Unfortunately they can't put Thor or any Marval characther in the parks yet. Marval is owned by Disney yes, but Universal still has the rights till there contract ends and they have to close down there Marval area. That's why Disney dosent have any Marval characthers at any of the parks.
The Norse Gods would be a great addition. It would be better if they used the actual Norse Gods and not the Marvel versions. First because it would be more genuine and second so they wouldn't infringe on Universal. Universal may own the Marvel rights but no one owns the rights to the Gods. Just make sure Thor has red hair, gauntlets, belt of strength and is in no way related to Loki and I think they'll be fine.
Thank you for recording this video, I really enjoyed this ride as a kid and I'm disappointed that they changed it. Every time I think of this ride, I revert to your pov video. Thanks again
+ThePoolofDeath I agree! I mean Frozen was cute and sweet at first, but now Disney is just obsessing over it. Like it came out almost 3 years ago! Get over it! I also heard that they might change the Cinderella Castle to Elsa's frozen palace, but that's just a rumor so I'm not really sure.
+ThePoolofDeath It is a shame that an original concept was replaced by Frozen. But I don't necessarily blame Disney. Frozen is popular and it makes them money. If people keep paying money for Frozen stuff, Disney will keep churning it out. Seriously though, Frozen is absolutely inappropriate thematically for EPCOT. Arendelle may be set in a fantasy Nordic country, but it is still fantasy.
I rode this in 2000. I thought it was a really strange ride, certainly don't long to go on it again like I do other Disney attractions but I LOVED the little "port" at the end. The atmosphere... So magical like the beginning of the DLR POTC. Loved seeing it at the end of the video after all these years.
But EPCOT is to show the cultures of other countries , right? So what Frozen has to do with all this? Not supposed to be in the Magic Kingdom ? If things are so, then where is the attraction of Rapunzel and Snow White in the German session? Of course that frozen new "Toy" is amazing, but why it is in EPCOT? It should be at Magic Kingdom! Disney have fantastic ideas but the place it's not correct (sorry for THE bad english)
The origin story is actually Danish, but even if Frozen is a remake set in Norway, it has ZERO to do with Norwegian culture or history. The new ride is a shame and disappointment.
I'm going back to Epcot in September for the first time since last year. As much as this ride is part of my childhood... it needed an update. Maybe not a Frozen one, maybe something still trying to teach you about the damn country it's based on, but you can tell everything is ages old. My family still has little troll figurines from this ride, we love it so much, but... Walt himself did say these parks were supposed to be ever-changing.
I literally just found out that Maelstrom had been decommissioned. It was one of the major reasons I'd always wanted to return to Epcot (the other being Starship Earth and the Imagination Ride), and finding out it had been replaced, especially with something Frozen of all things, is a bit of a downer.
Rode this my first time I went in 2011 and when we went back a few years later I was so sad to see this ride was being taken down. Loved the atmosphere the ride coming through the wall gave to that part, looked like a cave to me.
Such an underrated ride!! It's a shame to see it replaced. But hey, one day, when the Frozen ride becomes irrelevant and gets taken out, I suspect the RUclips (or whatever people will use in the future) comments section will blow up the same way.
Truly Love Walking In The Main Hall Before Getting On The Ride Seeing The Oil Rigs In The Ocean And Feeling The Very Cold Temperatures The Air Moving In The Hall It Made You Feel Like You Were There It Was So Well Done
"You are not de first to pass dis vey". Fuck, I'll never hear that again in person. Why the fuck didn't they put that Frozen shit in The Magic Kingdom where it belongs?
joeyservo They didn't have the money and the new ride will attract a lot more popularity than the Maelstrom. People will definitely come to Epcot just to ride the Frozen ride. It was a business move and one that clearly worked.
Remember when Disney use to build a good balance of original rides and rides based on franchises? Those were good times. That's why you have rides like Thunder Mountain, Jungle Cruise, and Space Mountain. Rides that are pushing over 50+ years old and still feel timeless. Now you have god dam Bob Chapek prioritizing ONLY rides based on blockbuster franchises. So 10 years from now when you ride Spiderman/Guardians/Avatar everything has already started to feel old and outdated. "Wow! look how young and slim Chris Pratt use to look!" There's definitely a place for rides based on movies in Disney theme parks for sure (I do actually really enjoy the new Guardians/Tower ride!), but if that's all you do and don't balance it with what made Disney theme parks timeless and original (Haunted Mansion/Pirates/Figment/ect) then you turn in to Universal Studios, who is constantly updated EVERY ride because they get old in 10 years.....
Damn! My friends and I loved that ride it was a classic and fit in with the theme for that country. With!? Frozen is just a trend and really shouldn't be at Epcot, one of their other parks yeah but, geez more greedy tactics to capitalize on their movies a d merchandising opportunities. Epcot's for adult's asmhch if not more than the kiddies...😕
SO sad to see this ride change. I know it wasn't anything terribly exciting, but I loved it's quirkiness. Poor trolls. You should've known your curse would come back to haunt you. "Disappear disappear disappear!!"
While I recognize the technical superiority of Frozen, I feel it does nothing to add to the Norway Pavilion. It simply doesn't belong in Epcot, but in the Magic Kingdom. Maelstrom, you will be missed.
I'm actually excited that they are going to change it and make it Frozen themed. My little girl LOVES that movie.. And I'm always all for when they make Rides based on Movies.. Wish they would do more..
well i hope your little girl gets sustenance from the tears of the elders who will weep as the fond memories of this ride slowly dissolve into the voids of time.
jtbedazzle IT'S THE CLOSURE OF A THEME PARK RIDE, NOT THE BLOODY FUNERAL OF A CLOSE FAMILY MEMBER!! Geez, get a grip... Next, you'll want... *Chorus Of Violins Start Playing Mournful Dirge* Oh great, just great...
I went to Disney when I was 10 in 2010 and this ride was the most amazing ride ever! I come back 3 years later, I see its being replaced by this fucking frozen ride!!! LIKE WHAT THE FUCK??? WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT FROZEN.. In the end, Disney knows who the true fans are and how they will never forgive them for taking it away forever...
I will miss Epcots appeal to adults. My grandfather was from Norway and my mother loved the stories. I went here first on a foreign language trip with my French class but the Norway part always charmed me.
+bmlguy My thoughts exactly! I know that Arendelle is based on Norway but it's NOT the real Norway. World Showcase's main purpose is to represent 11 different countries' cultures and history, not Disney Princesses or talking snowmen. Disney should have considered putting it in either New Fantasyland or somewhere in Hollywood Studios :/
I went to Disneyworld and Epcot with my family in the early 90s. The only rides I remember from Epcot were this ride and the Figment ride. Sucks that they replace them with rides based on movies.
I loved Maelstrom :( as a small child it really got me interested in my norwegian heritage. I loved how the trolls and magic are a focus not just vikings, and the modern jndustry paintings at the end were actually cool to me. It's such a shame they didn't just upgrade this :(((
My family scrimp and save every year for Disney and we have gone for years. No matter how many fast passes we get for test track, soaring, toy story mania and so on, I have always loved Maelstrom. Yeah it wasn't the most high tech and modern ride but it had an atmosphere to it that I loved. I have such fun memories of queuing for the ride and the whole feel was cosy and traditional. It was a huge mistake demolishing this traditional wonderful celebration of Norway with Frozen. Like seriously. I am devastated! At least there is a video that will remind me of my favourite ever ride
I never had the chance to go on this in person, but it looks grand. I remember this as a breakthrough attraction from the era in which the Disney parks were experiencing a renaissance. That being said, this attraction does look as if it had some issues. The unloading area set is not all that convincing. Frozen Ever After looks quite good, but I would have liked to see this in person.
Better PRAY that Olaf the Snowman’s eyes actually work. His eyes eyes stopped working. Just a pair of empty black voids. The screens turned off. I’m still scarred for life after seeing that! All the characters are animatronic except for their eyes and faces, which use a reverse projector like screen to animate their facial expressions in CGI. IE: The screens that display Olaf’s eyes turned off do to a glitch.
ambercaylencloud More like next year, after watching it so many times you kinda get sick of it. Not for little kids though, they'll never get sick of it! :P
The ride is coming out in 2016 they are ahead of schedule. So yes, people will go crazy over it! Also, the squeal is coming out in like 2016 -2017 so don't worry it will still be alive and growing
Hello there. Update from nearly 2018. (11/29/2017, for you future dwellers). There have been a LOT of 10-30 minute waits on frozen ever after as of late and frozen merchandise is down, hence the frozen "short" on the beginning of coco.
One LESS ride at Epcot. Literally, the only rides I can think of are Test Track, Soaring, and the rocket things, all of which have incredibly large lines.
I love this ride, but I am sure Disney has thought long and hard to replace this ride, all good things must come to an end. I trust Disney will replace this ride with something spectacular, they have always been amazing and I have not been disappointed yet.
I'm that lil nerd in the family that actually would love to go to Epcot and ride these kind of rides. Sadly my family never agreed to go there because it wasn't a thrill style park. This attraction itself shows good details and quite interesting story that fits the area where is located (Extra points for me because I find the viking/Nordic culture very interesting). Well, get ready for endless hours of cheesy frozen songs in the Norwegian part of Epcot, lol.
Its not that bad, but it's really not meant for people who like all kinds of rides, it's targeted towards parents to take there little kids and the rest of there family on.
Story time! When I was really little (I think around 5 years old) my parents took me to Disney and we went on this ride. They didn’t really know what it was but it was hot out and all of us wanted to be someplace out of the sun. They asked the workers if it was scary (because I was very easily scared as a kid) and they said no, but you may get wet. So they took me on the ride. Now to a 5 year old that couldn’t even handle Gravity Falls, those trolls were some of the scariest shit I had seen in my life. I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone on the ride with me as I screamed the entire time. After we got off I told my parents “I did not like the may you get wet ride”. It’s been a running joke in my family ever since, used to describe any ride that went worse than expected, scary or not.
The worst part for me is that it closed from being educational about my country to something that shows almost nothing of my culture And is even inspired by a DANISH tale. I would love to see maelstorm when it was still running to hear what you where told but Disney wants to milk frozen for all it has so
It was fun to see this one more time. I agree that it was a less than thrilling ride (we always went on it because it was one of the few rides in the countries section of EPCOT). Converting it to a Frozen ride is brilliant; great blend with the culture.
Amen! They should have put it somewhere in New Fantasyland or next to that Frozen sing-along show or whatever in Hollywood Studios, not Epcot! Isn't World Showcase's point the history and education of different countries, not Disney princesses or talking snowmen?
Well, here's where I disagree with you: That ride SHOULD go to Epcot, and as much as i wish Disney would stop shoving Frozen down our throats, I think a frozen ride is a cool addition to the Norwegian Plaza. It fits the theming well, and epcot dosn't get nearly enough love. The last new ride that was placed there was Mission Space back in 2003, and while the building isn't new for this ride, I'm counting it as new becuase they're gutting the entire interior. The problem I have is that they're removing Maelstorm. Maelstorm is in the top 5 coolest rides in epcot, IMO, and to see it go for more promotion of a movie that people got sick of 4 months after it's release is what pisses me off.
Dont complain until you actually see it...Walt Disney himself said he doesnt want everything in Disney parks to stay the same, he wants new changes and expansions...so stop whining.
i'm not saying that it's gonna be bad. I'm just pissed that they're still shoving Frozen down our throats, and that Maelstorm of all things is a casualty because of this.
I wish they weren't getting rid of this ride. I've always loved Norway and the Norwegian pavilion is the closest I can get to going to Norway without a passport. Disney should have just fixed the ride up a bit. Not replaced it with a semi-fictional culture and fully-fictional characters. The only thing I am almost excited for is the possibility of an animatronic Olaf. But honestly, my favorite part of this ride was the animatronic polar bear and the Norway pavilion was the best in Epcot. Now it might as well be the Arendelle pavilion.
An important thing to understand is that many rides in Disney, especially in Epcot, have sponsors so Disney can afford to keep rides open. When the sponsors stop funding the ride, it usually does not end well. Each of the country pavilions in World Showcase are funded by the country they represent. Recently, Norway stopped funding the pavilion. In order to prevent closing the area they created the frozen ride
its funny that disney's little mermaid was a great movie, but it took them 22 years to finally have a true ride attraction based on the film, while frozen, which isn't as good as the movie seems to be, is having like a full fledged attraction withing a matter of 2 years ? wth ? O_o
I never went on maelstrum but still it looked cool and I wish there was more rides like this it would have a mix of fantasy and reality that would take ideas from the country's folklore
"You're not the first to pass through here...nor shall you be the last."
*sighs* ....if only.
Chao Flaka yeah what a bunch of polar bear baloney
Chao Flaka The reason of my childhood nightmares is gone 😞 I’ll never get to go on and call my young self a baby..
Daisy Baldi’s fiancé I don’t even remember the three headed troll because I would know to not look at it. I loved the ride except for that part and the drop was my favorite “thrill” ride as a kid
😢
Disney used to sell nostalgia. That goes back to Walt himself. Now they try to sell pop culture. They’re doomed,
I'm really sad they are replacing this with a Frozen attraction, even though I like Frozen. Isn't the point of Epcot to showcase different real world cultures?
The story of frozen I think is Norwegian. Although I would have preferred it it they kept maelstrom, because it makes more sense
Frozen claims to be Norwegian (based on a Danish story loosely), but it showcases very little of anything actually Norwegian.
Disney is all about the money, they don't care about preserving culture when they can make more money from a cartoon.
Like I said, why didn't they just add another ride?
space
I think Frozen would have fit better in Magic Kingdom
I agree
thank you
No need for thanks.
I think it be better if it was places in Hollywood studios
Although I was never a big fan of it, it's sad that this attraction has to go. It was one of those things that made World Showcase unique.
I AGREE!
Frozen should never get an attraction at all 😡
@kabooom I mean it wasn't that bad I was impressed by the giant marshmallow(the big snow monster) animatronic
I completely agree.
I went on Maelstrom and it was pretty good. Glad to see there is a video of it to show people what it was like.
My grandma got stuck before the drop . She went when Epcot was new .
Y E S
I totally agree with you the Maelstrom was made specially to highlight historical stuff about Norway while the new frozen has nothing historical in it at all other than taking place in Norway but thats still not a good reason to replace this ride over that.
Damn I'm going to miss Maelstrom. I liked Frozen but that seriously belongs in the new Fantasyland, not in Epcot.
+Daniel Moeller Yes, I also thought that Maelstrom was a great ride but, whenever I rode it, some people complained about it that it was too short and every time I rode it, there were little kids crying at the trolls part so maybe they must have gotten rid of it for a good reason.
I agree but it gives epcot more population as it wasnt as popular before and everyone is always at mafic kingdom :)
Same never got to ride it looks SOO fun though.
disney trying to attract more kids to epcot, the ride had no connection with anything disney, although i miss it, I understand what disney had to do :(
@@lilymermaid7207 although epcot was popular with the adults and gave a break from the kids
It's kind of a shame they're turning Epcot's countries into... movie-themed attractions. The idea is supposed to be exhibitions of each country, like a World Fair, not 'here's this Disney movie that takes place in this country!'
I know
Yeah, its sad
@Bridget Fullam I never minded characters from films being featured in subtle places in each of the countries, but making rides completely about the films is definitely outside the original vision of EPCOT
@Bridget Fullam ugh
Ikr.
Better than Frozen at least except
1. Before Disney bought Marvel, Universal Studios claimed rights that no theme park in the Orlando area after they built their Incredible Hulk ride
2. A boat ride wouldn't really make sense for Thor (And it doesn't really for Frozen either)
Good Idea though!
Dinosaur is scarier

Same. I went on when I was 4 and it even scared my mom
I'm gonna miss this ride. And the pointless oil farm scene.
ROFL!!!!!!!
That part is funny! I hope they make a tribute to that in the Ftozen ride. XD!!!!!!!
Angie2343 I'm imagining Olaf rolling around in oil. :P

***** Lol I'm not angry at Disney, I dont hold grudges but I just wanted to ride the Maelstrom one more time cause i rode it when i was a lot younger so.... yeah
vgmaster9 Amen
Really sick of everything being replaced by either Frozen or Harry Bloody Potter
The reason those aren't funded is because those countries wanted to make sure they were represented well.
yep because multi billionaires need more money. 🙃
@@LehmanVideos what are the 3?
A hidden gem. Every generation gets an exclusive set of things to do in Disney. I'm thankful this was part of it.
Norway is supposed to be a badass country.. Frozen was a good kids film but hardly the best disney film that needed all this hype.
Thank you for having some common sense. XD But yes, Frozen is extremely overrated.
Frozen belongs in Hollywood Studios, not Epcot
Noooooo! That ride was the perfect representation of the Norwegian history!! 😫😭
fffffffffffreaky
LET IT GOOOO LET IT GOOOOOO

demondincredible NO I WILL NOT 😖
This ride scared me to death when I was younger
Me too.... I would always cry before I got on but my parents made me anyway...... oh well
I would always close my eyes. But then loved it after a while. I'm sad it's gone
same, i had to get on it and i cried the entire time
3:40 that abomination paralyzed me for a week, and damn its still pretty unnerving to me.
Avari Mallonee SAME HOLY
Thanks for sharing this. I'm sad it's closing. Walt intended Epcot to be a worlds fair. He wanted people of all nations to be able to come together and learn from each other and about each other. The loss of this ride is frustrating despite its lack of thrills. It was unique and educational and gave people a small glimpse of another culture. Frozen may be set in Norway...kind of...but the educational aspect will be sucked right out in favor of animated snow people and ice throwing princesses. I will definitely be avoiding the the hysteria of the next year or so. Farewell Maelstrom. You will be missed!!
However, tourism to Norway has gone up quite a bit thanks to Frozen, so...
As a kid I was, in fact I still am obsessed with Norway. So being able to experience this was just magical. I really wanted to live in this ride.
todays kids will never know how great this ride was
Exactly, this ride will always be my favorite..
i wish i could go on it one more time
Stupid Frozen 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
Yeah its sad but teenagers now had a chance to see it at least. It was my favorite ride for as long as I could remember though.
After watching about this ride, I missed out in so much.... ;-;
Frozen has no place at Epcot.
Amen!!
Ikr they should keep this ride and replace a ride which nobody cares about anymore in Magic Kingdom.
Well...
Nemo is there.
+Chayson Dam It will always be "The Living Seas" to me.
+Chayson Dam yeah nemo is there, and it was a big mistake by Disney mixing themes, but you'd think they would have learnt from there mistakes, but they clearly haven't.
This really was one of the most underrated Disney rides of all time. So unique and well-crafted.
Inspired according to the credits, though it bares so little semblance that they didn't even need to purchase the rights.
It does bear no resemblance, but I'm pretty sure those rights are public domain by now anyway.
+jacoblgames True, but you don't need to purchase the rights to something written in 1844.
It's still in bad taste to put a Danish story in the Norway pavilion.
Yea I’m also of Norwegian descent. This ride meant a lot to me but when they scrapped it for the dumb plastic princess ride it broke my heart.
R.I.P, damn Frozen is taking over the world
its not really frozen is getting old
+Josh Rumsey i live in orlando and the new frozen ride has an average wait time of 3-5 hrs so its getting real old
+will S. Damn, that's a long time

Jaciboid56 yeah I know and I’m sick of it
Of all the times I've been to Epcot I have never heard of this ride until last year. I went and rode it earlier this year and now it's gone.
Was it good?
Matthew may It was "ok" - Watch the video - It's pretty much as you see on the screen.
Matthew may it was alright I rode it 8 times while I was there
I accidentally reported theme park reviews comment when I was meant to like it D; sorry
Yeah better than frozen
R.I.P Maelstrom
You were always one my favorite rides. I hope Disney doesn't take a dump on you and make the Frozen ride shitty.
Ryann Newsome Amazing or not Frozen is still a cash grab 😐
But the frozen ride is also cool, not as great maelstrom obviously
Emilio Treviño but maelstrom taught a purpose about Norway. Frozen did not.
My beloved Maelstrom! One of my favorite rides of all times and all the parks
wow! 7 years later here I am missing the Maelstrom. So I searched for it and got this video in the results. Oh my dear Maelstrom, gone but not forgotten.

This is a lot less terrifying then my 9 year old brain remembers. I remember the 3 headed dude in my nightmares being much scarier.

No frozen world everything is always frozen
"I can't believe they're adding a Disney movie in Disney World! They might as well call it Disney World if all they're gonna add is Disney-related stuff!!"

MNIMnoob I can’t believe how wrong and childish you sound. You don’t deserve to watch this video if you act like this.

This was my favorite ride at WDW. “Norway’s sprit has always been, will always be adventure!”
I actually agree.
I loved Maelstrom, I don't care what anyone says. I wish it was staying this way, I'm not a Frozen fan.
I could not agree more
As a guy with extreme Scandinavian ancestry, I’m sad I never got to go on this ride while it was there.
such a shame an intresting ride like that is being replaced with Frozen Garbage
yeah, I mean Frozen was a cute movie and all but I'm really upset they got rid of this...I loved this ride
+Jasmina Pesakovic I can't believe frozen is replacing this it's because everyone is having frozen fever
Arendelle may be set in a fantasy Nordic country, but it is still fantasy.
yeah frozen is crap
Norway
Norwegians would disagree with you on that.
frozen is Norwegian
The origin story is actually Danish, but even if Frozen is a remake set in Norway, it has ZERO to do with Norwegian culture or history. The new ride is a shame and disappointment.
They want to attract more people to EPCOT.
Thank you for documenting this ride. I worked at EPCOT in the WDW College Program and I rode this ride MANY times. I loved it! It will be missed!
RIP Maelstrom. 😢
I want frozen to be taken out and for this ride to come back.

Loved the drilling platforms in the North Sea which is true and shows that drilling can be done even in one of the most radical places on earth.
TuneBoy Well, of course I know why, I'm just venting for the loss of some heavy nostalgia.
joeyservo You asked why so I answered. Sorry.
A charming, interesting themed ride replace with corporate plastic... typical...
Aww😢 I'm going to miss this ride! It was so cool! I don't think frozen even goes with the Epcot theme.

Maelstrom was epic. I loved the part where you could see outside and I loved the trolls. This ride was short but incredible
Damn! My friends and I loved that ride it was a classic and fit in with the theme for that country. With!? Frozen is just a trend
and really shouldn't be at Epcot, one of their other parks yeah but, geez more greedy tactics to capitalize on their movies a d merchandising opportunities. Epcot's for adult's asmhch if not more than the kiddies...😕
That's true. If you look at it, Frozen's kinda achieved cult movie status
frozen will make epcot more popular
SO sad to see this ride change. I know it wasn't anything terribly exciting, but I loved it's quirkiness. Poor trolls. You should've known your curse would come back to haunt you. "Disappear disappear disappear!!"
This was a nice ride, I hope the frozen ride is just as good....if not better.
You know it won't.
I think it will be better. maelstrom was becoming outdated. Frozen could be 2000x better!! :)

While I recognize the technical superiority of Frozen, I feel it does nothing to add to the Norway Pavilion. It simply doesn't belong in Epcot, but in the Magic Kingdom. Maelstrom, you will be missed.
I can't believe it's been gone for over 7 years now. Was absolutely my favorite ride there.

"You are not the first to pass this way... nor will you be the LAST". HA!
I will miss Epcots appeal to adults. My grandfather was from Norway and my mother loved the stories. I went here first on a foreign language trip with my French class but the Norway part always charmed me.
i don't get how a frozen-related ride in the norwegian part of the park makes any sense.
this is gonna suck
+bmlguy My thoughts exactly! I know that Arendelle is based on Norway but it's NOT the real Norway. World Showcase's main purpose is to represent 11 different countries' cultures and history, not Disney Princesses or talking snowmen. Disney should have considered putting it in either New Fantasyland or somewhere in Hollywood Studios :/
Frozen takes place in Norway
+Saxy Gamer It's based on a Danish fairy-tale. Denmark is not Norway.
I don't get it this to teach people about culture in the real world, not to capitalize off of a dumb fad movie.
+Eric Caton Being written by a Dane =/= taking place in Denmark.
Thank you so much for taping the ride and saving this for posterity!!!
This was my favorite ride in the world. It’s so sad to know it’s gone for a frozen ride.
I miss this ride so much. Every trip this was a "must do" ride. Frozen we did once and I could take it or leave it.
I'm actually really angry they replaced this with Frozen, ffs ):
I have no clue how I never went on this ride cause Epcot was my favourite park as a kid
I hate that they got rid of this ride. It makes it even worse that they replaced it with that godawful Frozen garbage
I know maelstrom was awesome, and frozen is overrated poo
Loved this ride! My husband and I were so disappointed the last time we went to Disney. It really was beautiful. Thanks for posting!
Honestly I bet in like 2018 no ones gonna care about frozen anymore
ambercaylencloud More like next year, after watching it so many times you kinda get sick of it. Not for little kids though, they'll never get sick of it! :P
The ride is coming out in 2016 they are ahead of schedule. So yes, people will go crazy over it! Also, the squeal is coming out in like 2016 -2017 so don't worry it will still be alive and growing

My friend, you are correct
Hello there. Update from nearly 2018. (11/29/2017, for you future dwellers). There have been a LOT of 10-30 minute waits on frozen ever after as of late and frozen merchandise is down, hence the frozen "short" on the beginning of coco.
This was one of my all-time favorites as a kid... I went on it at least eight times in a row on one of our trips. Great memories
Maybe something to make someone smile if they ever come across my comment but I used to call this ride nail Storm
One LESS ride at Epcot. Literally, the only rides I can think of are Test Track, Soaring, and the rocket things, all of which have incredibly large lines.
nemo
Honestly they could have left this where it was and put wandering oaken’s sliding sleighs somewhere in the back of the pavilion
Bei den Disney Themenfahrten bin ich immer wieder von der Liebe zum Detail begeistert! Kaum ein anderer Park kann da mithalten.
I miss this ride, I mean, HOW CAN THEY REPLACE THIS, WITH A LITTLE CARTOON THAT WASN'T EVEN THAT GOOD!!!!!??
Bc disney goes by popular demands, little kids are drawn to Frozen, so therefore the park and ride will get more attention. It's sad but true.
I remember going on this ride in 1994 when my family went to WDW. Thanks Dad
Had to come watch this after watching a video of that Frozen crap ride. Disney really messed up this time. :(
+Remy G 😂😂😂 "let it go"
+Remy G stop
Its not that bad, but it's really not meant for people who like all kinds of rides, it's targeted towards parents to take there little kids and the rest of there family on.
its actually good Disney didnt mess up
+Josh Rumsey The location is where they messed up.
That is very sweet ❤
This makes me sad, I really liked this ride...
The oil rig part was pretty cool...........
It pisses me the fuck off that they are replacing this with a frozen ride.
I don't think Walt himself would have like Frozen, and he definitely wouldn't approve of Frozen replacing the Maelstrom.
In order to prevent closing the area they created the frozen ride
its funny that disney's little mermaid was a great movie, but it took them 22 years to finally have a true ride attraction based on the film, while frozen, which isn't as good as the movie seems to be, is having like a full fledged attraction withing a matter of 2 years ? wth ? O_o
Melody1474 they just want to squeeze as much money out of frozen as possible
I never went on maelstrum but still it looked cool and I wish there was more rides like this it would have a mix of fantasy and reality that would take ideas from the country's folklore
