His singer wanted to play guitar, so he gave him the only one he had. That tells you pretty much all you need to know about what a decent guy Mike Campbell is.
Mike played some classic licks and guitar parts that just fit like a glove for the songs he played on. A true SESSION player not a million note speed burner which to me is a true guitar artist!
Mike always seems to get lucky with "getting a real good guitar that day". His 12 string Rickenbacker (on the cover of Damn the Torpedoes) was the next one made after George Harrison's.
John Stromberg He is ranked in the top 100 Rolling Stone guitar player ranking. Every guitar player I know says he is great. He worked for Dylan, Cocker etc. I know, what you want to say - but he is not underrated. Absolutely not
John stromberg, in your, HO "the most under rated guitarist in the world. Now that's a very opinionated point of view y got there lad, and seeing as how everyone who's ever heard him rates him, it seems to me, you talk such rot.
I get so tired of this comment on every guitar player video. I know of nobody in the world who doesn't have the utmost respect for Mike Campbell and his ability to play. He is one of the best and everyone who loves rock and roll knows it.
Such a great man to do so much to help the fur babies and such a great guitarist and just a all around great guy. I'm still feeling the loss of his brother in music and one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times Tom Petty who gave so much of his own credit to you Mike Campbell. You truly are one of the best and with such a big heart of a man. Happy to hear that you will be with another great Heartbreaker Stevie Nick's in place of you know who and I know you will make that band sound great also. Thanks Fender for honoring Mike with this guitar, you guys are the best. ~~~ Ricky ~~~
Nice guitar. Nice amp. Nice playing. Nice charity. Sometime it's nice to see the glass half full ... My very first guitar was a 1954 Stratocaster under the Christmas tree in 1963. Beat to hell, fretboard pitted, the nut had three chewing gum wrappers in different slots, ciggy burn on the headstock ... when you've been around a while and you've seen the originals with the real wear, you come to appreciate even the fake stuff ... there's a magic there that exists no where else.
Dave G Right... So refugees of war and/or the billions of starving families can help themselves, but dogs cannot. Therefore we should help the dogs. Most of the population of the world living in poverty are in their situation based on circumstances. Lets see how you view this topic when all of a sudden, you and your family become become a victim of circumstance, and become just one of the hundreds of millions of starving families in this world. Still want to help the dogs? Just to clarify, I would help dogs too, IF we could find a way to help humans first. Also, a lot of dogs can and DO help themselves. Look at Mexico. They form packs and roam around looking for scraps. We could help dogs by stopping puppy mills from pumping out ridiculous numbers of puppies. Thats how we can help dogs.
Kenny Carlile Self-congratulatory statements make most people sick for a good reason, you know. It's a good thing there are people like me that keep people like you in check. :) See what I did there? Wasn't it outright disgusting? Please say yes...
Dave G Umm.. Yes, I agree. (To the relevant point you made, not the assertion of my character - which may or may not be grounded, at least based on what you have read from me. I can see why you'd assume that.) But to the point on hand, your comment seemed to assume or at the very least imply, that I couldn't be bothered to help the needy - human or non-human alike. I have already stated that I would help dogs too, if only we could help people in need first. In other words, any reasonable person needs to prioritize if they are to attempt to make any type of broad difference in anything. You say humans can help themselves, and I agree. So why would we help dogs over the option of first helping other humans? Shouldn't we help our fellow man? Also, I wasn't just being an asshole when I stated a full-proof plan to help dogs. STOP MASS BREEDING THEM. We produce puppies like we produce Advil. People love puppies. But unfortunately, people don't love them once they become dogs. This is a Pre-school problem.
If it weren't clearly Mike Campbell playing that lick, there'd be some youtube know-it-all claiming he's playing the part wrong, and his tone is all wrong.
Actually I just tuned down a semitone (I hate that!) for some YT guy who claimed to be teaching a Roger McGuinn riff then found he used some bum chord. ;-)
What a great guy, guitar player, guitar, and cause. Using the money to save dogs. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are one of America's greatest bands. I sure wish Mike Campbell would run for president, I would vote for him.
+VonBluesman if he did, you'd have had your heart broken as he would have had to leave the Heartbreakers for a full time political career.. you wouldn't want him to end up like Jeff Skunk Baxter or Arnold Swartznegger or President Ronald Reagan or Sonny Bono.. would you?
Robert A yea i know what he does its still working for the government.. he spends a lot of time there than he does working in his music career and being a consultant is a job.. A paid job! he wouldn't be slacking around getting paid for nothing
+Robert A your line of reasoning is BS.. So what if they use entertainers to sway the public to vote them for president.. theres no crime in that and also theres nothing "sly" about that either.. You make it sound like its a violation of the criminal justice system or something. Beyonce Fleetwood Mac and many others were just paid entertainers for their parties.. thats NOT what you call "working for the government" like Baxter, Swartznegger, Reagan or Bono were .Those guys actually worked with the government as politicians and consultants not as entertainers... and oh by the way, Its Mac not Mack 😂
Wow-well the first thing that struck me was how young Mike still looks...which got me to thinking how lucky we are to still have some of these legends around. There are so few left now from that era that I loved, and was so much a part of my youth. Started recording their 1st album in 1975 wow-thats the year I graduated from high school. Just a really cool interview and cool of Fender to remake his guitar so accurately and then give funds to help animals. I only wish I could afford one....although should I ever win the lotto, I would first get Fenders copy of Clapton's Brownie Strat- then I would get one of these custom shop heartbreaker Fenders. The real funny thing is i kept. thinking- wait a minute Fender did not copy Mike's original guitar because his original guitar has a rosewood neck- and the new one has a maple neck.....but then I looked again and realized his first guitars neck was also a maple neck but it was just dirty as hell....LOL thats why Mike said he would not let anyone wash it off. LMAO
Great player is Mr Campbell (underappreciated) and band are the Heartbreakers. Sweet guit. However I personally think relicing is goofy. I would take a reliced guit for free though:-)
+Iago B Not exactly. Technically, cloning refers to living things, but we apply it broadly. "Replica", which means an exact copy or reproduction, is really the correct word.

I’m bit ol school, but have to say I little bit get it with the neck, tell you they are pretty close to real ones from 50’s 60’s with that super buttery feel
I thought all those early Broadcasters had the narrow spaced 12 fret dot markers? On both his original and replica the neck has the wider 12 fret dot spacing. What you normally see on 53' and up Tele's. Might his be a partscaster?
What I find amazing about this level of talent and success is that there's so much time and effort spent into duplicating an instrument yet the actual musician and instrument owner seems like he could really care less.
Tips i got from this 1) have a nail in your case and drop the guitar to hit the nail anywhere 2) accidentally iron solder the "random" body part 3) broken nuts are better then new nuts? im sorry that's not how it works (ignore this tip)
I totally understand wanting a clone of Mike Campbell's main guitar- but having faux wear and tear that matches his is just a little weird to me. If you don't want it to look new, then give it some use and you will generate your own unique wear and tear over 40 years (and hopefully some great tones along the way).
Very cool guitar and he seems like a good guy (with a fantastic internal metronome). A question for you Tom Petty fans: which album would you recommend I get to jump into Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? I hear so much about them but only really know their huge 80s hits. And is there an early live album that's killer? Thanks in advance.

Doesn't get any better than Guitars and Dogs...Mike Campbell is an American treasure and WAY under-appreciated ~
You are a great man for your dog rescue as well as your music, which is legendary.. What a legend!
Mike Campbell is a connoisseur of tones and has maybe the best ear in straight-ahead rock.
His singer wanted to play guitar, so he gave him the only one he had. That tells you pretty much all you need to know about what a decent guy Mike Campbell is.

I can't help feeling that with most signature guitars, though they may be quite accurate repros, what it all boils down to is the player's touch.

Decal and string tree are wrong too, as are the ferrules on the back (too straight).
Yup, probably a mid 50's Tele with a Broadcaster decal on it. I have seen photos of the bridge PU and it has staggered pole pieces, not a Broadcaster.
I would expect nothing less from you mike!! Great, I'm an Dog lover big time. thanks Man!
