Nintendo's Weirdest Game Boy Advance
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 сен 2024
- The Game Boy Player was released in 2003 for the GameCube and it allowed you to play your Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games through the TV. The way Nintendo made this work is pretty interesting since they decided to basically jam the entire GBA system inside the player making the base an actual Game Boy Advance system on the inside.

The actual weirdest GameBoy Advance is the one that goes in the car. It even had wireless controllers
Damn beat me to it.
What? Interesting. Couldn't find anything online. Any pictures? Links?
Daniel Haarti “visteon dockable entertainment system” had to look this up myself lol. Definitely would have to agree this is much weirder than the one connected to a GameCube.
yup i immediately thought of this when i started watching lol
I discovered that GameBoy through Scott The Woz video lol
If people didn't remember there were a few games that actually had extra functions when plugged into the Gameboy Player.
Couldn't you play 4 swords with other people that way or someone like that?
Wasn’t this accessory the only way to get Jirachi on the handheld Pokémon games? Or am I thinking of something else?
@@64jayr it was! Using the Coloseum Bonus Disc.
@@Rhythmik it wasn't the only way to get jirachi. The bonus disk connects to a gba through the GCN to gba link cable. You can use any gba, except for the micro and the visteon dockable system due to them having non standard link cable ports. And if you have adapters, you could use those as well.
Only example that pops to the top of my head is how Mario and Luigi Superstar saga have rumble compatibility when played on the gb player.
Love the inside look and I never knew they literally just threw a GBA inside the player
Sup bro
How’s it going @Nintendo Collecting
They had done the same thing with the Super Game Boy for the SNES, that has a Game Boy in it.
That's exactly what the Super Game Boy was on the Super Nintendo. They put Game Boy hardware in the cartridge.
@@chubbyadler3276 yep, I said that right above you 😝
I'm annoyed that a DS-line version of this concept doesn't exist for the Wii U
That would have been cool, at least we got DS on the EShop for the Wii U but otherwise yeah sad it didn't. But then again emulation was the way to go over hardware to keep costs down (besides having a DS or 3DS of course) I think so makes sense why but would have been cooler, maybe next to the SD Card slot on the front (if space there) and moving the USB ports to the back where the other two are. Can only dream or see if someone mods a Wii U to have it (and working around the functionality for DS mode or something).
Buy the Wii u eshop games
@@Matanumi
Are _you_ going to pay for it? Because I don't want to drop 600€ on copies of games I already own
I would of got a Wii u if it had!
@@Matanumi Rich dude offering to buy us game copies, and a console? :0
Ngl, when I first saw the mother board, my first thought was: "Its Missingno. !"
Damn, now I cant unsee it 😂
Underrated comment
I got a black GameCube with a memory card, offbrand controller, GBA player, and the disc in it's og case with the manual with no scratches for 90$ from a nice older woman last year. This was a great starting point for my gc and GBA collections
I paid 190 for the platinum gamecube, cords, gba start up disc and player, pokemon colosseum, pokemon ruby and red. This was around october 2020. Guy also had some gamecube demo discs (including the ruby sapphire berry update disc) someone beat me to those though unfortunately. I wouldve never gotten into gamecube stuff if it wasnt for that pickup.
Ok
LOVE the gba, i still play games on it today
Mines sadly broke
Thats the problem with clamshell designs
Same thing happened to my old 3ds
Any game suggestions? I'd love to keep playing mine and I'm always down for something new.
Sameeeeeeeeee
@@SonicVGamer how did it break, if you don't mind me asking?.
@@unknownninja1 I don’t know? It just randomly broke as i closed it
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the shape John is in? Night and day from his videos just a few years ago
I did not realize how rare that disc is becoming. I am looking at my gamecube right now with the gameboy player attached and the start up disc in the gamecube. And that golden sun clip makes me remember I never did beat that game. May have to hook the gamecube back up and finish that game.
The GameBoy player is the greatest console accessory ever made. I just wish the Hori controller for it wasn't so damn expensive.
The disc to make the games work is way overpriced
@@SaikoSoda Oh yeah, that's also unfortunate. However, at least that USED to be easy to find, I still have mine but could never find the Hori controller.
Also, there's a few exploits to use it without needing the disc.
Shame we can’t play Game Boy Advance Video cartridges on this.
Nintendo really thought that movie pirates would realistically pirate Shrek at 8FPS with about 4 pixels.
Sure
Ironically, framerate and resolution are "fine", it's the low bitrate that really kills it. Watch a GBAV cart sometime, you'll be surprised at how watchable it actually is. Still though, agreed, why would anyone want to pirate movies via this method. Even Video CD is leagues above GBAV.
You can do it with GameBoy Interface. The GB Video carts look for specific GB Player features and reject the Player that way. GBI can turn those features off and the GB Video cart has no idea it’s running in the Player.
So you can watch Shrek and Shark Tale in their low res crunchy versions on the big screen.
What about the gameboy car thing that makes people say “oh shit it’s a gameboy”
Eyyyyy Scott reference.

I remember seeing this advertised and wanting one so bad when I was growing up! I used to dream of playing Pokemon Ruby on the big 27 inch crt in my room.
I love how it actually made it a cube. Beforehand it was just a simple box.
I got one at a retro game store with the disc for $25 like 7 years ago. Looking back on it, very happy I made that purchase. He said nobody had really wanted it and he had it in the store for a while which is why he gave it to me for so cheap.
Not as weird as the DVD player, but it is still a classic.
Spawn Wave upping his fitness game. Your guns are showing bro, nice work!
i had bought this brand new back in the day and just today I realized there was a button to push the cartridges out lol
Lol

Same here. My mind is blown!
Me: The thumbnail has me think its the Visteon Dockable Entertainmwnt System featuring GBA like Scott said on the GBA episode. It looks like one. But it can't be can it?
Spawnwave: GBA Player for Gamecube
Me after he reveals it: Oh, ok yeah makes sense.
I remember buying the Gameboy player in a flea market back in 2011. one vendor had just the player for 20 bucks and another vendor in the same day had the disc for 20 bucks as well. So I bought it for 10 bucks less than retail. I never bothered to check its retail price thinking it was probably $120 retail I guess all parties that day didn't know the value of the hardware and software that day.
I know it’s too late now but I wish they did something similar to this on the wii u to play 3ds games. The gamepad acting as the touch screen is just too perfect to not want to use that to play 3ds games on the tv
Or even just DS games. Massive library to pull from.
My favorite part of the Gameboy Player is that it makes the Game Cube a cube
Still have my GBP and Startup Disc. And, no, not at all surprised to hear it's an actual GBA inside because that's exactly how it acted. Not only did Nintendo's own manuals tell you to think of it as just another GBA when linking to other systems, but it also handled GB/C games in exactly the same way that the GBA did. Button combinations to change color palettes and shoulder buttons for optional screen stretching, all that jazz.
seeing this just reminded me of playing pokemon blue on my tv through the snes
I love that you include so much historical knowledge in these videos
I remember when these were $15 used at Gamestop! If anyone out there is looking for one of these, I've noticed that you can get a japanese Gamecube with GBA Player and disc for the same price or even cheaper than the US GBA Player disc itself. Since the GBA is region free it works perfectly fine for NA games and you can also delve into the world of JPN GC Games.
I’ve had one since it was new :) playing your game boy games on the TV was always a novel thing back then, and arguably still is today. I did in fact know that it was a self-contained GameBoy. The super game boy also is the same way.
For those interested in GBA games - remember DS lites play them as well! Backlit and everything! Those systems are very cheap compared to OG GBAs and this attachment!
So ny great games on the GBA. Golden Sun 1 & 2 were some of the best jrpgs i ever played.
Bought a Gameboy Player with the startup disc back in March of 2020 and yes, they are not cheap anymore. Very useful for playing GBA and GBC games and was very surprised to see they used actual GBA hardware for it. The only downside is the startup disc not being the best, as stated in the video it’s better to get the Gameboy interface on a SD card, a memory card attachment for it, and an action replay disc; you’ll get much better results on it and you’ll save yourself some cash
Me and my buddies used to play advance wars on the big screen. That game needs a refresh so bad.
@@7991rellik Yeah, it's great. But I still miss Andy and the gang.
I was very fortunate to get a start up disc bundled with the GBPlayer base for about $50 a few years ago.
geez i had no idea how expensive this stuff was, im so glad my uncle kept his gamecube for so long lol
People tend to separate the disc from the hardware. So they can charge rediculious prices for the disc knowing that you need it. This is done sometimes with the wavebird wireless GC controller. They separate the receiver from the controller. Then they can charge more for the wireless adapter. If that isn't the case there are alot of careless people who have lost alot of wireless adapters.
Got five of these things laying about. They’re excellent for foursword adventures and crystal chronicles
Crystal Chronicles I could definitely buy. That was such a pain to play co-op lol
FSA is already a gamecube game, you probably mean four swords?
@@IAmNotASandwich453 no I mean four sword adventures. I put four swords adventures in one cube hooked up to the largest tv in the house and then I use the other four gamecubes, with gba players, each connected to their own monitor and acting as gbas to play with my friends.
-edit-
We also play the gba foursword game as well, but that only needs four cubes.
-Edit 2-
Good question. Sorry for all the edits. At work, intermittent downtime’s.
I never even knew about these. I would have definitely had one for playing Pokemon back in the day.
Back then I never was fortunate enough to come across one, but it was always a dream of mine to own. I also played a lot of pokemon.
Still have mine to this day. Used to play donkey Kong country and super mario advance on it everyday. Such great times! I had the black unit on my black system. Always looked more sleek if you had the same colors.
God I wish the other colours game out in the UK, I ain't paying insane import fees for purple.
The purple one did come out in the UK. It was the version I had.
I found my old boot disc a few months ago, it was scratched to shit. Went and bought 3k grit sandpaper, a felt cloth drill attachment and plastic polish. I started working and then sold it for 120$
I've got a black one (To match my black GCN) with its original disc which I bought new almost 20 years ago. I'm not really surprised to hear that there is basically a GBA inside of it, that would have been the easiest way to make it work at that time, what surprises me is how much the discs alone are going for these days. I had no idea.
To this day, I still love the Game Boy Player. Even if you never had a GBA but had a GameCube, you opened up an entire library.
I definitely did have a Game Boy Advance, though, it was awesome being able to take my Pokémon games, or whatever else I was playing, with me anywhere, then come home and play it on my TV! It was basically the Switch before the Switch, though you could say that about the Super Game Boy as well, but the GB Player went even further, not only including Link Cable support, but having special features like rumble added for Drill Dozer and Superstar Saga.
And yes, I have also hooked together two GameCubes, one running Wind Waker, the other running the Game Boy Player, with the GBA to GC Link Cable, and used entire TV as a Tingle Tuner
The Panasonic Q had it's own unique variant too.
"Living in the shadows"
If you were in my friend group, that was all we talked about
Love the “we had stability before stability patches” at 4:29 mins
As a kid, I've always wondered how the GameBoy Advance connects to the GameCube as it had those obvious outlets at the bottom of the GameCube that are similar to the GBA's. I thought it would've been amazing to try some exclusive features for Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg and Sonic Adventure DX. I can't believe I'm just now finding this out after forgetting about it over the years.
I've always wanted to do a Four Swords Adventures setup with five GameCubes. I just need four friends with GameCubes who would have time for such a thing XD
Dude I had the same idea
yeah, but then go all the way: get 4 more GBA to Gamecube Cables and 4 gbas, so that you can use GBAs as controllers.
I remember you could also connect your Game Boy Advance to the gamecube via special cables and use it as a controller but ALSO use it as a screen to play your Gameboy games on.
I'm not 100%, but I do remember that I (a GBA owner) and my friend (a gamecube owner) did some of the things and also played one of those final fantasy games together.
The best birthday present I ever got was a special bundle from Target that included a Gamecube, a Game Boy Player and a copy of Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition. This was perfect because I was already a GBA enthusiast and Mario Kart Double Dash was around the corner not to mention the wonderful Wind Waker launch as well.
I got the gba player for 20 without the disc and just put the boot up on a memory card works perfect .
Man I got super lucky. Someone sold their Gameboy Player with the start up disc for $12 a couple years ago and I got it! I still want to try the Homebrew method though for the start up disc, but the GameCube seems complicated to mod...
I liked how you could link a GBA to use as a controller. The gamecube dpad was... kind of inadequate.
I've had this device for years...I've never noticed the ejection switch on the side...
Have one of these and I love using it to play/stream GameBoy games on the big screen. I know most people will prefer emulation, since it scales better and has saved states and speed up functions, but there's something super comfy about playing GameBoy games on actual hardware and not being restricted to a small handheld screen.
FYI you don’t need the start up disc a few game will boot it. The only ones I know of are Wind Waker and some BMX game. You just put a game in the GB player while the system is turned off the put the disc in and start it like normal and once it get to the main title it will change over to the GB player. Those start up discs go for about 150-200 and not a lot of people know you don’t really need it.

Bought one on launch day, been attached to my cube, until a few years back (probably more like 10 now), when I ordered a Silver one from Japan. Still have both, still have the discs in perfect condition - Japanese box and disc are untouched, minus having my US Black GBP in the box instead. Love it!
I still got mine with the startup disc. Interestingly, I use it more now than back in the day. When you’re younger, you don’t mind the small size, but begin to appreciate devices like this later in life.
I wish Nintendo would release something similar for the 3DS on the Switch. This would be amazing for content creators who wish to make videos on 3DS games.
I got the gamecube player bundle when it released. Seeing those Ebay prices, I'm kicking myself now for trading it in for a few bucks towards the Wii >_
Espically considering how cheap Wiis were a few years ago (never paid more than 15 for any of my bundles).
I still have my gamecube with the gameboy player and I seriously didn't know you could eject a cartridge until I watched you do it
0:25 The GBA players was one of the main reasons I got a gamecube. The whole Platinum package looked pretty good together. That and Animal Crossing.
Sounds like the Game Boy Micro might be even more 'in the shadows' than the Game Boy Player considering it didn't even get a mention in the intro!
Got this around when it came out. Did not know it came it different colors. I have the black one on my platinum gamecube. Still have the cardboard sleeve too that slid over the start up disk case.
Depending on where you were located, there were different colors. For instance the US as far as I can recall only had the black option and Japan got one for each color of the cube.
@@idontknowyouguys lucky them. Makes sense why I was not aware of other colors.
@@nickprovence last I checked they were somewhat reasonable for the other colors to import. Except orange
I still have the black Gameboy Player I bought back in the Gamecube's heyday up in my parent's attic. Startup disc is there too.
Got one of these by accident in a GameCube lot I purchased back in 2009. Didn't notice it on the bottom of one of the consoles I picked up, and was pleasantly surprised when I got home and had a closer look. Luckily, it came with the disc as well. :)
Anyone feel like Spawn Wave kinda looks like Spelunky Guy after he grew his beard?
Neat. I actually still have one of those startup discs lying around - unfortunately don't have the player itself anymore, but might look at putting the disc on eBay in the near future :D
Used to have one of these! My mom told me i had to sell my gamcube and its accessories before I could get a Wii... Yes, back when I was hyped for the Wii -_-
should have kept the controllers, memory cards and games at least... Wii had perfect backwards compatibility (aside from the Gameboy Player ofc)
I did end up keeping the games and my wavebird for that reason
I remember having the Tingle device for the Wind Waker when my Advance was attached
I got a Japanese game cube and a Japanese start-up disc, and a Game Boy player that also happened to be japanese (though as far as I understand the hardware isn't region locked), about 4 years ago. That entire set up, plus 3rd party power and AV cables came to about the same as just a European start-up disc.
I’m just glad I bought the Game Boy Player including the start up disc for around 30 bucks some 8 years ago. The prices for it now is just gonna continue going up.
I still have mine from my middle school days. Both the disc and the attachment.
The GameCube GBA player is the only thing that has actually made me consider getting a GameCube, since the games run on actual hardware. I have a Wii with GameCube backwards compatibility, so other than the few GameCube specific attachments/quirks, I don’t have much of a reason to get one when my Wii can do everything that a GameCube can do and more.
I just bought a GameCube with player and disc for 250 from a local guy who runs a shop in his garage
The best part about the GameBoy Advance adapter was that is made the GameCube look more like a cube.
I have 2 GBA SP's still. One is converted to run on AA batteries (rechargeable or Alkaline), the other is bone stock with good Lithium Ion pack and charger. Best handheld from back in the day, hands down
GBA SP was the best, backlight, and clamshell design, and could play all the games. Peak gaming!
I actually bought and installed a tv output for the GBA before this thing came out. It just slipped another ribbon cable over the one that connects the screen and provided A/V out. I loved some of those games so much (hello every single Metroidvania for a while) but hated playing on a handheld. It's weird that you mention Pokemon, I played that game handheld and didn't mind it so much. Much more important for the aforementioned Metroidvanias and what not.
Its been almost 2 years since this video was uploaded. Has there been any development on creating a standalone console with this?
I know you pretty much have to create an entire system to "replace the gamecube", but with prices of GBA going up and this going down, it might still be cheaper than those consolized GBA systems, and get better results than using a normal gamecube with the disc.
The board looks like the most famous glitch of all time from Pokémon. Talking about Missingno.
I actually own one of those discs, and i quite happily still play all my gba games on my crtv lol
1:15 i was honestly really surprised to see ace attorney here lmao
Wow. I still have that player and disc. Nice to see it has value.
Nice to see the insides.... I have 3 GameCubes, they all have the GB play attached. I have a Silver one...an Orange one an a black one... I never owned the disc... I got my black one from a goodwill, with the Gameboy player and the disc, they were asking $45... I grabbed it, the GameCube does not work but, the disc and the GB player works fine... So seeing how I paid $45, I got a good deal !
The gameboy player is the greatest peripheral ever made by Nintendo and I'm so glad I bought mine at release. I wish they had done something like this for DS games using the Wii U were the top screen would display on the tv and the bottom screen displayed on the controller pad. Had they done that it probably would have saved the Wii U and generated greater sales. I've never owned a Wii U but I would have otherwise.
I still play mine, but lost the disc, had to get a memory card that has some kind of hack on it to let F-Zero GX or Wind Waker act as the boot disc, and it works great!!
I was looking at getting one of those and also getting a gameboy player. Glad to hear it works. I should do that at some point, hopefully prices to become to unreachable by that point.
I had one of these on my gamecube!! I remember I sold it in a garage sale probably around 2006-07, with this attached and totally forgot to give them the disc to play the gb games lol
Oh wow. I got one years ago for the cheap and I still have the disc with it. Had no clue it had become so pricey.
The GBA did the Switch Handheld-TV long before any of todays systems.
The only one that I can recall which did it even earlier, was the Nomad.
what are you talking about? The super gameboy for the SNES did basically the samething for the Gameboy using a SNES.
I honestly didn't expect it to be a whole dang gameboy advance.
this is "typical nintendo". The Super Gameboy for the SNES is basically a gameboy.
The "wide boy" from HAL for the N64 was basically a game boy color, latter GBA in an N64 card.
There is a lot of uses for it now, like if you want to capture video of GBA/GBC/GB gameplay for videos, but back then, there is something to think about.
Primarily, the first thing I can think about is Pokemon transfers from the GBA games to the Gamecube games (Colloseum). It's also probably easier to play GBA games if you don't own the system. The GCN was able to connect to the GBA for certain games and work as a controller, like Zelda: Four Swords Adventure, and Windwaker. I wish that a similar adapter could have happened with the Nintendo DS, and you could play games like Mario Kart DS on the TV. Sadly, this feature was digital only for the Wii U, and only select games were available with this feature. Would have wanted to play Diddy Kong Racing.
Not sure how this is weird it makes a GameCube a GameBoy Advance, it's like the coolest accessory ever.
This pretty much worked on the same principles the super game boy 1 and 2 did with the snes, instead of emulation they literally just stuck the system itself in a case that uses the bigger system for output.
I just wish the player didn’t require the disc, cause those small discs are so fragile and around kids, they’re bound to break or get lost.
I managed to pick up my player & disc for a really good deal (almost) a year ago. I bought it so I could play Ruby/Sapphire on my TV, which turned out to be a greater experience than I expected.
It was cool seeing how they did this type of thing back then, especially comparing it to what they're doing these days with the Switch
I had one of those as a kid. I never thought about how it worked. That's really interesting that's it's basically a separate Gameboy.
I was lucky enough to get a GBA player and the disc in it's original case for $35 at a used game store about 6-7 years ago. Man it's super nice. I used it with Zelda and a GBA and it's cable adapter
Guys, by all means, go into the world of Homebrew on the Gamecube.
It seems like a pain in the ass, but soldering is easy to pick up and SD cards are getting cheaper.
You'll thank me when you're booting into Swiss and using it to play games from your SD2SP2 with full cheat support.
On the Wikipedia article for the Game Boy Player or something, it says games with tilt sensors are incompatible with the accessory for being “impractical”
The most overlooked/wierdest GameBoy advance isn't the GameBoy player, It's the Visteon Dockable Entertainment for your car
I have Gameboy Player for my Gamecube too.
And with the help of Gameboy Player you could play every The Legend of Zelda games on one video game console.
