I don’t see how it’s possible to colonize 30% of the galaxy in the next 8000 years when the milky way is 100,000 light years. If we achieved light speed tomorrow and focused on nothing but colonizing, we’d only have 8%. And that’s assuming it’s colonized the second we arrive and then we dip
It is theoretically possible, but rather in millions of years than 8000. I am not sure where that number 8000 came from . It has been calculated many times since 50 years ago. it first popped up in scifi, but serious scientist reaffirmed it. Mind you. take theoretically with a huge grain of salt. The idea would be sending generation ships (or something like that ) to other stars with journeys taking 10.000's of years between stars. You can colonize the entire galaxy in 15 million years in that way, give or take a million years. Technically and theoretically, the travelling (sending a spaceship from point A to point B) isn't an unsolvable problem at all. We already sent some spaceship out there coming close to other stars in 60.000 years or so. The major problem is keeping people alive, focused and interested during the trip, all without killing each other over scarce resources or back evolving to chimpansees. Some sci-fi enthusiasts and scientists dismiss this as an insignificant issue. I see it as an insurmountable problem though. Why would anyone ever go into space for a trip taking 40.000 years.
