I don’t see how it’s possible to colonize 30% of the galaxy in the next 8000 years when the milky way is 100,000 light years. If we achieved light speed tomorrow and focused on nothing but colonizing, we’d only have 8%. And that’s assuming it’s colonized the second we arrive and then we dip

It is theoretically possible, but rather in millions of years than 8000. I am not sure where that number 8000 came from .
It has been calculated many times since 50 years ago. it first popped up in scifi, but serious scientist reaffirmed it.
Mind you. take theoretically with a huge grain of salt. The idea would be sending generation ships (or something like that ) to other stars with journeys taking 10.000's of years between stars.
You can colonize the entire galaxy in 15 million years in that way, give or take a million years.
Technically and theoretically, the travelling (sending a spaceship from point A to point B) isn't an unsolvable problem at all. We already sent some spaceship out there coming close to other stars in 60.000 years or so.
The major problem is keeping people alive, focused and interested during the trip, all without killing each other over scarce resources or back evolving to chimpansees. Some sci-fi enthusiasts and scientists dismiss this as an insignificant issue. I see it as an insurmountable problem though. Why would anyone ever go into space for a trip taking 40.000 years. With their only prospect is eventually dying in the vast blackness of space, with a tiny sliver of hope that 10.000 generations down the line, people might settle on another planet.

@@ericvosselmans5657 It's because the video is titled the world in 10,000 AD, it's 2000 AD. So that would be 8,000 years from now. Therefore, it would be impossible for us to have done that by 10,000 like the video suggests. I know it's possible over the course of millions of years

@@chrisa3961 I am an optimist too, and I think science can solve many problems. But I strongly feel that making a list like this, it's ok to make one mistake but this list is full of them. Like Aleksander said. We are not even close to finding a way to get close to the speed of light. Heck, it looks like even with fusion, getting more than 20% of lightspeed will be hard. Present optimistic predictions of the spread of Von Neumann probes (self-reproducing machines that could travel the stars to look for life and spread the seeds of human life, would need at least 1 million years to spread over the galaxy if they could reach an average of 10% of lichtspeeed. Which would be hard to do at a top speed of 20%. Having to stop at all viable stars to repair, reproduce and research and refuel.
And 1 gram of smart matter will have more compute power then all of present mankind combined?? He has no idea of the amount of energy that would be needed to complete one computation. pushing all that into one gram, it would get hotter then the illusive fusion reactor I mentioned before.

Well, this sounds interesting. I can imagine how much technology will be in existence by then. There is a computer problem of the year 10,000, but with so much more technology to come that may not be a problem at all. It will be the last year of the 100th century and the 10th millennium. It should be a huge celebration when that year comes. Of course, I will be long gone by then, but it's wonderful to see this happening. I want my future descendants to see this, and they can live to be more than 1000 years old and travel in space in between the celestial objects in the Milky Way. Imagine us humans becoming a type 4 civilization or higher by the year 10000. To have my descendants live on Earth and other worlds.
