I remember watching these scenes as they aired. I was in college. This whole storyline was so riveting from beginning to end. Not only did Hillary B. Smith win an Emmy (in a year where Susan Lucci wasn't even nominated), but Michael Malone and his stellar writing team also won an Emmy. Malone was probably OLTL's last great head writer until Ron Carlivati closed out the show's ABC run.
HBS is phenomenal. Nora Hannen Gannon Buchanan has always been my favourite soap character, second to none and followed by Anna Devane - and this scene is why I fell in love with her. Just wow. I remember watching this as a little girl with my mom, and not quite understanding it, but just wow.
I remember this so much from 30 years ago. It was all so well done, excellent really. Yes, I was a 14 year old boy watching a SOAP, but it was so good! Zach gets no love ever. However all 3,frat boys were excellent! 😊They all played their part with excellence. Kudos to them all!
I had never watched this as it was so heavy I didn't ever really want to see it but I'm glad I finally did. Brilliant performance, so manic and scared and yet strong. The scenes in the bathroom are even better, especially with Rachel. I miss Rachel so much.

I understand a defense attorney defends no matter what. However, Nora's character would have been ruined if she had continued to defend three rapists and gotten them off.
No question about it. Nora was too decent a human being to let her 3 guilty clients walk... not once she realized they were as guilty as sin, had no remorse themselves (except for Powell), and might even rape again. Her inner conflict was what made for such good drama.

I know I should feel bad for Nora, but I just can't. The way she went after Marty on the stand! And thought Marty was lying from the start. I love Nora , but she's getting what she deserves. Marty was no saint, but who lies about being raped? You can see the pain oozing out of her! Just like Luna said "it's all in the eyes". Nora saw that look while Marty was on the witness stand and chose to ignore it. But these two are remarkable actresses! Love SH and HBS

Because despite the story, Susan Haskell herself was not actually raped by Roger Howarth, Josh Weinstein, or Sean Moynihan. There are some women out there who are great actresses.

Powell confesses voluntarily and Marty tricks Todd into confessing, so they plead guilty and are sentenced. I can post the sentencing if you want to see that. I have like 99% of this storyline, so pretty much if you want to see it, I have it.

I just recently found that most of 1993 has been uploaded on to RUclips, and have just gotten to the earlier events that led up to the trial of Marty's frat boy rapists storyline. I'm only now at the point in the story where Nora has agreed to represent the accused rapists, not just Kevin. If I recall right, the trial went on for most of the summer in real time, (1993) and i never forgot Nora's powerful scene where her closing argument caused the mistrial. It was amazing, so I looked on RUclips to see if anyone had uploaded it. It will likely be many weeks before I get to that scene again, rewatching them in order, and I just could not wait that long! Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this. One Life to Live was the only soap I followed faithfully for years--but it was (for the most part) much higher quality writing than the ones I barely sporadically viewed.

It was that Nora had a crisis of conscience that grew bigger than life once she came to the inescapable realization that her clients were as guilty as sin, and they were about to walk. She did what she knew she had to do, because if she had gone ahead and won an acquittal for 3 privileged punks with no remorse, likely the remarkable Ms. Gannon would not have had a peaceful night's sleep ever again. She was too fine and decent a person to live in ongoing torment and with hating herself for her role in turning 3 criminals out on the street, free to commit other rapes. She risked her career, her professional reputation, and retaliation by a sociopath like Todd Manning, to put things right, by causing a mistrial. I thought she was an awe-inspiring role model for young women across the US, and I admired her character and her portrayer equally as much. Hillary B. Smith was so beyond awesome, she deserved the daytime Emmy 10 times over. Also, the writing was so brilliant, bold, and even profound, that I found myself actually forgetting that it was only a soap. One Life to Live's talented cast did that on a regular basis with their remarkable acting chops.
What I had wished, during this time - given this storyline is epic in the way the Karen Wolek story was epic... and how the rape of Marty Sayebrook returned ONE LIFE to it's socially relevant roots... but if the players could have been linked, or tied closer to the established families and some families that had gotten written out. I know the new producers of the show felt new families, new blood - but there were so many ways of bringing veterans back - Marty could have been Mary Vernon, and I would have loved to have seen Steve Fletcher as Brad Vernon and Nancy Snyder as Katrina Karr returned; and if Powell Lord was the son of Viki's first cousin Richard Abbott... rather than some distant relation... and couldn't the Gannon's be related to the Grays - of Sadie and Carla fame? I just never understood Michael Malone and Linda Gottlieb in the sense - they praised the rich history of ONE LIFE (when they were ushering Megan out), but never tied their current storylines to any of past that made the soap so memorable.
In my opinion, I think the scene with Nora and Rachel in the bathroom would have been better had there been no music playing. I still thought the scene was powerful but the music just seemed so unnecessary.
Too bad there aren't that many defense attorneys like Nora, most of them are cold and heartless, they know their clients are scumbags and still try to get them off so they can hurt another innocent person.

This was a good story-line for OLTL in 1993, but it was a bit over the top (and somewhat farce in terms of the dialogue and situations not being realistic). Still it was good entertainment, and after the lousy story lines involving West story in 1888, Fraternity Row, Eterna and Sloan and Vicki . . . it was a bit of a better return to form to OLTL (which reached a peak in 1984, 1986 and 1987).
