"Check It Out" is another great song from JOHN. Really just about any of his songs are great. Crumblin' Down Lonely Ol' Night Paper In Fire These are a couple more greatest tunes from John Mellencamp...
"Good kids don't SUCK on chili dogs" - 😂 Brad's quote of the year! This goes up there with Lex' " imagine surfing on a butthole... Like, the TEXTURE". 🤣
I fought authority last Wednesday. Went up against the town board protesting my property taxes. We fought to a draw. People say it was a good show. I tell them I wish I could have watched it, but I was busy at the time. Authority doesn't always win, it just doesn't loose.
I love that Jimmy Eat World gave a shout out to JMC and this song on their own "Authority Song", off the Bleed American (or self-titled, after 9/11) album. "It's how the hustle goes / see what the jukebox knows / Put my last quarter on / I play Authority Song" I do wish they'd do another song from Jimmy Eat World..."The Middle" is so bland. "Sweetness"...that'd get them more hyped.
His song SMALL TOWN is my personal theme song lol. His song Rain On The Scarecrow is an anthem to the American farmer and their hardships , you gotta hear that one
If you want to hear a more serious side of John, Rain on the Scarecrow has an intense tone and lyrics to match. Pink Houses is also more serious in tone and a great song as well. But guys, I'm just gonna tell you...to feel the whole JCM experience, you gotta see him too. Please just trust me on this one and watch the official video for Crumbling Down.
This has always been one of my favorites. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on one of his more meaningful songs like Scarecrow or Peaceful World.
It's about enjoying the fight. (Not necessarily a fist fight, but maybe at times) When someone tells you not to do something and you do it anyway ... It's fun.
Being an Indiana boy you find out about John’s true reputation. He is a bad boy that fought against his label and pretty much anyone that got in his way. But he admits he’s an ass, deal with it or move on. Huge respect for the man.
Indiana guy here also. I think he basically says "Here I am, take it or leave it. I could give a rat's ass." Always respected that about him. He didn't "sell out" for more $$$.

Being an Indiana boy myself, all I know about John is he demanded perfection from himself and his band. He didn't take kindly to screw ups. I also remember a few other things, but we don't need to go into that.
Heh, I remember rocking out to this in the car when I was in high school. Now check out Bobby Fuller "I Fought The Law" (or the version of that song by The Clash). And beyond "Pink Houses" and "Small Town", check out "Lonely Ol' Night", "Crumblin' Down", and "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", and for a taste of Mellencamp's early sound, "I Need A Lover", from 1978. Pat Benatar released her version of that song as her debut single in 1979.
Play Guitar is a cool and interesting song, you may like it since you recieved that Eddie Van Halen replica guitar. The song gives you John Mellancamps perspective on playing the guitar.
I remember an interview with JM back in 83 or so, and he said this song was written as a reggae song, and if you mentally slow it down and Jamaica-up the vocals just a touch, you can hear it! Also, for some reason I didn't really consider him to have awesome pipes in the day, but these days I think he rates with the best of them: certainly as good as Springsteen, with whom he is most often compared.
Highly recommend checking out. John Cougar Mellencamp song rain on the Scarecrow. And check out the biography on that song to it's cool. If you want to see another side of John Cougar Mellencamp. His songs call check it out

Yes! I saw him live on the Scarecrow tour. Nothing flashy, no elaborate light show. Just John and the band doing what they do. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
youre surprised by this sounding "different" because you havent done his bangers yet, just some catchy hits. try "rain on the scarecrow", or "paper in fire".
He lives on a farm not far from me and I saw him riding his motorcycle. He's a regular guy. I love his music especially that song because I can definitely identify with it!
John Cougar is to rural working class America in the 80s what Bruce Springsteen is to East Coast working class America of the 70s & 80s. Both are excellent.
My guy of 27 years..is from Indiana like John- they both ended up at the same house party and jammed together- my guy went into the military and well.. we know what John did-love it! 😀

Mellencamp had a lot of great songs, ranging from Stonesy rockers, folky intense ballads, lots of to choose from. Try Crumblin' Down, Rain on the Scarecrow, Paper in Fire, Pop Singer. I don't know anything about the last 2/3 of his career, he's probably written a bunch of great tunes then too, definitely had it in him.
John Mellencamp's "Uh Huh" album is where he turned a corner as a songwriter and with arrangements. from the early 80s through the early 90s, he was one of America's best. My #1 song from him was (Pink Houses) loved it also (Lonely Ol' Night) such nice guitar work by him in this song. If you haven't listened to them yet your in for a treat. 🎶🎸
He's talking about doing his own thing, being authentic, and being happy about it. No regrets.
Agreed - fun video too...JCM in the boxing ring...

“I do things my way and I pay a high price” ~ Minutes to Memories (another great JCM song)
I can't believe no one has reacted to John's, "I Need a Lover". That song is as epic a masterpiece as they come. His first album is ridiculously good.

Seconded all the above and "Rain on the Scarecrow," "Pop Singer," and "Play Guitar."
Great song. Always loved it. I'm willing to bet that it was influenced by "I Fought The Law" by Bobby Fuller Four.
Yeah - apparently the lyrics were never credited and the songwriter died in a mysterious car fire...so no legal ramifications for JCM
Sonny Curtis wrote "I Fought the Law" and his band The Crickets recorded the first version in 1959.
Curtis is now almost 85 years old.
Brad and Lex know this about authority, one word - Lattice.
lol

not one bad song on that great Album.
Authority doesn't win if its corrupt. Stand up and voice your opinions. "You might be wrong... but you might be right." Billy Joel
I love the working class vibe from Mellencamp, Joel, Bon Jovi, and Springsteen. Billy Joel's "Allentown" is a favorite.

Next gotta do his earlier hits
"I Need A Lover"
"Ain't Even Done With The Night"

Great songs
