Thirty six years later and the content wears very well, still just as funny as then. How much snarky comedic material from today will still resonate as well in 2055?
Great stuff you can tell Johnny really gets a kick out of him. I've also heard Jerry reminisce about Johnny the respect he had for him is quite touching, both of them are just such great pros at their craft
Seinfeld was an unknown at this time except for on the small club circuit. Little did this guy know that he would soon become the biggest comedian ever..... and the richest
toshir0m1 By this point he had been doing stand-up for quite a few years. This was 1983. He was first on "The Tonight Show" in 1978 and had been doing comedy for years before that.
Daniel Dougan Thx for the info ^^ and yes, it feels like he's already confident, so I guess I shouldn't call that "young act"... but still, what a talent !
He's polished, that's for sure. It's the same act from the start. His act is a comfortable act for comfortable people, nothing too challenging or too engaging. Just keeps everybody and everything at a distance. Clever, bloodless and antiseptic. Observations on the silliness of the mundane.
I'll never forget when I was Johnny's waiter at Louie's greasey spoon on rodeo drive. He called me over and said there was cigarettes butts in his soup. I felt like all those comedians being called over....my special day....May 5 th, 1983. I bragged to every waiter and busboy I met for the next 10 years.
He is successful and funny because he connects two concepts we never would have thought of combining. Like at 4:12-5:10: "Your cloths like getting out. Their entire lives they wait." "Laundry day: you wait for them."
Bill Burr just had Rich Shydner on his podcast and he talked about how being called over by Johnny after your set was the highest compliment you could receive. Johnny could make or break you.
One of the best episodes of the podcast. Along with the "fuck you and everything you do" and the recent one with Nia where he talked about gold-toed socks.
I heard that too. I don't know this for sure but I am sure Johnny never intentionally "broke" someone....he was one of the most supportive hosts around and I wonder if he ever tried to "hurt" a comics career because maybe they had a bad set on his show.
Of course it was all worked out ahead of time. You think they would let some comic stand there after a set confused and waiting for Johnny to give him a thumbs up or thumbs down. You can tell that the banter at the couch was all pre arranged. Also the new show I'm Dying Up Here on showtime is about stand up in the 70's and most of the first episode is about this exactly.
Robert Lupia Yes, among comics, getting the Tonight Show was the shot, getting an okay sign from Johnny after it was the imprimatur and getting called over to the couch meant you had arrived. By the time Jerry did this set, he'd had the okay sign from Johnny. He also had the line from Tonight Show producer Fred de Cordova that ended up in an episode of Seinfeld, "It's so nice when it happens good".
Jerry is a true comedian. He can talk about literally anything under the sun, no matter how mundane or ordinary and turn it into a riot. One of the funniest men to walk the earth.
The part where he said who would eat one of the bucket sized popcorn bags, had me realizing. Yep, in 1983, people thought that was funny. Nowadays, you can't go to any major theater and get anything smaller than a horse bucket size of popcorn. My how the times have changed.
Nightclub for clothes?! Haha no wonder that got a huge laugh and a cheer! He’s so funny about clothes, same with those sock jokes material. I’ve seen some commenters on RUclips who argue about whether he was actually properly funny, like he’s an interpreted relic or something. And they’re self-taught comedy archaeologists. But Jerry is clearly very funny, with heaps of topics and angles and his rhythm is exceptional and catchy. He makes it look natural to him, which I suppose it is. By the way, if you’re at the beach and need to hide your wallet, don’t hide it in your shoes, hide it a mile away in a hidden spot in relation to your shoes. They’ll never guess it’s there.
zyxwut321 Yes ..that is a food way of putting it....he himself is not really funny but he crafts solid jokes...doesnt really have a comedy persona like Rodney or Rickles or Pryor
jerry is a comedy icon, and some of these jokes make me laugh; but this clip is a perfect encapsulation of how far comedy has come, when you look at Dave Chappele, Bill Burr, Anthony Jeselnik, etc.
Edgy basically means to stabd out, usually by talking about things we keep private for a reason, like sex or violence. These days, you'd stand out if you weren't gross.
Applause is a funny reaction to jokes. I understand the rhythm of a Tonight Show five in the 1980's is not altogether different to five on Conan now. There's usually an applause break before the end half to two-thirds of the way through, but a Tonight Show five in the 1980's had more applause breaks, short enough, but definitely a very Carson era thing.
Yes much much simpler and carefree for more people than now. We didn’t work so bloody hard then, and no internet. Slower. Calmer. And you could count on people a lot more than you can now
I remember that stuff too, although I was a small child when people were still stealing them. These days I've read people steal smart phones a lot. Of course people also still steal cars. There was a stolen vehicle parked in front of my father's house for a few days last year. My sister recently married a police officer and she mentioned that there's a lot of car theft still these days. We all live in the suburbs near D.C.
Very common man things made funny again show about nothing from something 😀😀 He’s very smart and talented! No meanness to others no silly experiences but a very common relatable (even after 40 years) fun quirks
Pardon Me: Because it helps them when they can't come up with any funny material. A comedian who can make people laugh their heads off without swearing, or being sleazy, or offending anyone is a true genius comedian. Brian Regan is an example.
I was sitting here feeling old and then I saw this in my youtube suggestions, this guy who i thought was like 35 or something is from black and white era of television
Johnny really liked Jerry. Great springboard for his career. As David Letterman said, how so many comedians got their big break on Johnny. Our Creator, GOD has never denied us happiness. As Jesus always said it best, "that your joy might be full."
The clarity on this is AMAZING for 1983.
I love how you can actually relate to what he is talking about
klskl1 comedy, getting laid, getting a job. Revolves around relateability
Thirty six years later and the content wears very well, still just as funny as then. How much snarky comedic material from today will still resonate as well in 2055?

How could anyone not like him?
Right? The man is a genius.
He’s an arrogant prick
Couldn't agree more, Helen. Say hi to Morty for me.
That's GOLD, Jerry!
GOLD!
Oh my God ^^ I had never seen Seinfeld's young act .... HOW can someone be that good right from the start ? ^^ That's just amazing.
toshir0m1 By this point he had been doing stand-up for quite a few years. This was 1983. He was first on "The Tonight Show" in 1978 and had been doing comedy for years before that.

toshir0m1 probably using all Larry David's meteral ..Jerry is is puppet
Daniel Dougan he started on HBO in 81
This was 41 years ago on tonight Show, the video is so clean its amazing to see it now. Thanks for sharing this, love Jerry Seinfeld.
Seinfeld proved humor doesn't need to be mean or dirty.
or often funny
That's what first got me interested in Seinfeld. I think he was hosting the Emmy Awards years ago, and his routine had no smut or vulgarity.
Jeremy Gorfinkel Gorfinkel ??
a joke that involves a home invader shooting the sleeping homeowner in the face is considered light-hearted and clean, then?
Or funny.

He's adorable. Great observations of every day scenarios. I loved it
It's 2022 and the jokes never aged..
@@modest_spice6083 Nope! His observations were hilarious.
"I don't know how it got up that high in the first place"
Genius!😂

Robert Lupia every comedian talks about that. It's cliché.
I heard that too. I don't know this for sure but I am sure Johnny never intentionally "broke" someone....he was one of the most supportive hosts around and I wonder if he ever tried to "hurt" a comics career because maybe they had a bad set on his show.

My favourite comedian EVER...👍FROM AUSTRALIA
Jerry is a true comedian. He can talk about literally anything under the sun, no matter how mundane or ordinary and turn it into a riot. One of the funniest men to walk the earth.
Like Norm Macdonald..
Probably is that he is a massive A hole
It’s just the way his brain operates. He once said he was irritated by lots of things.
'one of the funniest men to walk the earth'
Dude you need better friends, or better sense of humour. Probably both you generic being.
Who else is watching this in 2020 under quarantine?
A longer version of the laundry bit aired in "The Seinfeld Chronicles," which was the pilot episode of "Seinfeld."
Daniel Dougan Signals Jerry Signals
It's also in "I'm telling you for the last time"
He's so polished here. Very Seinfeld!
I grew up on Seinfeld. That was basically my childhood
Wu Liwei you just sounded like George!
I've watched it every day for 20 years.
Totally killed it. Prime Jerry.
What I always appreciated about Seinfeld is he never needed to swear to be funny. Clean comedy. I like that.
"Was it a a Sony? Probably the Penguin." 😂😂😂
All Swedish comedians today believe they are Jerry Seinfeld. But in real, they are Kenny Bania
Maybe the best ever combination of standup and sitcom talent.
I remember watching this in 1983 and laughing out of control.
i just watched his special on netflix and he did the bullet catching bit.
And the laundry bit! They're so good! I was thinking, maybe that was the point of calling the special "Jerry 'Before' Seinfeld"?
Did you watch all of it? In the end he states those were all the jokes he did that got him onto the Johnny Carson Tonight Show
not admittedly lol but thanks!!
He killed it
This routine must have really impressed me because I can still remember this specific show.
Jerry missed a good line about the clothes in the washer being a nightclub. Should have mentioned the wet t-shirt contest.
That's Gold, Coleman, Gold!
He is not going to make it.
Poor fella.
Lol
He has fleas
@@FatPigInTheHouse how did you knew?!
Were you his X-barber- one of his X hairstylist ?
Truly one of the funniest comics I've ever seen.
hes so cute!!!!

Yep, in 1983, people thought that was funny. Nowadays, you can't go to any major theater and get anything smaller than a horse bucket size of popcorn. My how the times have changed.
I was just thinking about how I always get that size
Am i crazy or does he look like a young John Travolta at times?
You're crazy. Except for one thing: they bought their jaws from the same plastic surgeon in the 70s. :)
Yeah he does, like a young straight John Travolta!
Oh my god, he does!
Nightclub for clothes?! Haha no wonder that got a huge laugh and a cheer! He’s so funny about clothes, same with those sock jokes material.

"Who buys the horse bucket size popcorn?"
Seinfeld is a great comic --not edgy at all but he makes people laugh.
He makes people laugh in that sleepy, comfortable kind of way. He doesn't really challenge you, just points out silly shit.
zyxwut321 Yes ..that is a food way of putting it....he himself is not really funny but he crafts solid jokes...doesnt really have a comedy persona like Rodney or Rickles or Pryor
Mike Kramer These days people think you have to be super edgy to be funny. To me, being edgy is the last resort for someone to get attention.
@@Mikekramercomedy How can someone craft solid jokes but not be funny?
Thanks a bunch.
You could tell he was shitting bricks when he first sat down with Johnny, but he finished strong.
He used those exact jokes he said when he was talking to the host 10 years later in his show.
I could relate to his bit about putting his wallet inside his shoe at the beach. So true.
Three people didn't like his act. Probably cashiers.
Kelly02895 Ruthie Cohen.
It's just so much fluff.
YOU try being a cashier for a while.
it just didn't make it for them
She need to hear the new material...
The washing machine thing was hilarious
can't tell if Seinfeld has the biggest head or the tiniest shoulders...
Scott Lyft yeah well your a anti bigheadite
the hair really makes it seem gigantic
Chicken wing shoulder blades * Ask Elaine.
if you heard him lately, go with the biggest head.
arab jew
I actually used to do stand up in clubs when I was young for a review many years ago. People actually laughed.

No dirty double meaning jokes. Just plain jokes. That's Jerry
Seinfeld > Friends
Friends was the girl version Seinfeld. The "guys" on Friends were beta chumps.
He nailed that!
I think this was recorded on a beta max. Enjoyed it cheers.
Who could have predicted that the man would be a central figure of a cultural touchstone?
HA! I seen that episode of That's Incredible of the guy catching the bullet when it first aired, sweet!!!
Whoever would of thought teaming up with Larry David was a good career move!..🤣🤣👴
He paused and waited to get waved over by jhonny. I wonder the relief he felt when he waved him
imagine Johnny Carson saying to u on his show "good stuff"...u know u made it

You gotta love the Sein.
Damn life must have been simple and carefree for people to enjoy such basic observational humour back then this much.
He was a good break from all the raunchy comics.

Who's here after watching Jim Carrey on comedians in cars
Holy crap, I can't believe he had his act down pat even then.
I think it would be super cool to do this
How did this man make me feel bad about my seldom-worn clothes
candy as jewelry behind the glass at the movies---what a great bit. hysterical
One of the funniest "clean" comedians ever. Haven't seen this one yet.
I still prefer the edgier ones like Bill Burr and Jim Jefferies though.

Not to be too persnickety, but if Jerry is talking about his stereo being removed from his car by breaking in, it's burglary, not robbery.
Great .
whats the deal with bees?
Jerry's weird obsession with apparel.
opiated toothpaste I find it attractive. It shows he cares about appearance and it can be considered a form of manners.

Jerry that had it.
The male Ellen Degeneres. Never noticed it before.
Howard Stern used to call Ellen "Vaginfeld"
Good conversationalist, amusing, never found him funny though, he's very light.
