I am a BMX rider originally from Wyandotte. I raced Motocross at the Silverdome. Now at 46, I still ride and now my son rides. Long live Wyandotte, BMX and the Pontiac Silverdome. This kid rocks, thanks Red Bull.
Amazing that those structures were there..... I can't believe out of all those broken things they found ramps! It's just insane.... It's almost like they were built for bikes.
George Woods You gotta be kidding me...You ACTUALLY believe that they went to an abandoned football stadium in Detroit and found perfectly good bike ramps to film their commercial??? lol Come on man put the fucking joint down and think about it for a second before you make a post like this.
Gnarlington And it's only been like this for a few years. The Canadian buyer let the inflatable roof collapse to try to scam the insurance company out of many times the amount he payed for the place.
1977 was the first year they had amature competition Supercross in the Silverdome after the Pros raced during the day (Bob Hannah beat Jimmy Ellis). Walking my bike through the back tunnel entrance into the air pressured stadium without the revolving doors was like a mini wind tunnel of warm air hitting my face and body, cold outside temps and a snow piled parking lot(April 15th I think). I raced in the 80A class and I will never forget it! My oldest brother showed up from MSU to watch me, my middle brother was my mechanic, and everything else, he took care of me(I was only 13!). 140 riders in my class and I trophied. We stayed in Lansing overnight after finishing around midnight. Sunday afternoon on the way home we stopped to see my other brother at Alma College to show him my trophy. There is so many memorable moments and historic events that took place in the Silverdome, I would think that book is being written as I speak if it hasn't already, Epic Concerts (Elvis) and All sorts of Sporting Events, it is sad to see it in this condition today! The Pontiac Silverdome doesn't deserve this after what it gave back to the Detroit Metro Area and the State of Michigan. At the same time, you can see and feel the Detroit Tough in it. It is Still Standing!
Totally frickin awesome!!!!! I was at the first game played here on 8/23/75. It was an exhibition game between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs. It was also the only game ever played with no roof in place at the then named Pontiac Metropolitan Stadium.
Pontiac Silverdome. Ex home of the Detroit Pistons & more famously the Detroit Lions. My home town, born & raised. Wish I would of known they were going to be there.
Brad Klipner Yes sir. From 1978 - 1988. The Palace of Arburn Hills was built just for them. The Pistons will be moving again to downtown Detroit soon. Just heard on the news today
Y-Town! D's little sister/brother... Hangin' in the shadow of an Ann Arbor, a town that thinks it's still cool but is really just an aging hipster wearing "distressed" clothing and sitting on Facebook all day talking about how cool it is as the ink dries on a Mephistophelian contract. Ypsi isn't "cool" like that... We still have a soul... ;)
I played on that turf my last year playing for the city league, in 5th grade. It felt so cool to play where the pros played and at such a young age no less.
Let me tell all of u chaps, the silverdome was one of the most surreal places that had me gulping when I first went there at 12 years old. 48 now and fell in love with the Honolulu blue and silver and bubbles logo
Very, very well made video, the narration, the creepy stadium and how Tyler brought the spot light back to the Silverdome once again. I absolutely loved it. Thank you.
I saw a Lions game there when Barry Sanders was the running back. Oh, and monster truck tractor pull when a guy on a motorcycle jumped the distance of the whole football field. And, it was cool to feel the wind pressure when you walked in.
Tyler Wells, it was a while ago. I can make a vid of some pictures if you want. The time line is from the early 90’s to 2000 my last year pro. I did what I could with what I had.
Carlos Oquendo I just watched it. That's a Pretty funny edit. Quick question. Do you realise who the Webbie show is. It's Mark Webb. One of the best Bmx riders ever. Check out his edit "The Webbie show 3."
Millions in tax revenues. Then it turned into a drain when it wasn't generating money. The Lions picking up and shipping out seemed like a good idea to have the team downtown, but there's a black stain in the story that doesn't get talked about, and this is it.
this video gives me goosebumps. it saddens me that the silverdome and SE MI have been treated with such neglect. it will always be a part of me none the less
Don't make the Silverdome a metaphor for Detroit. It's 45 minutes away in Pontiac, it was replaced with a better stadium that's actually IN Detroit and it was allowed to rot by its Canadian owners.
John Mozena I'm still trying to figure out what great things the narrator was talking about that happened there? 30 years of Lions losing, a crap Superbowl between SF and Cincy, a bad World Cup Soccer game? Best thing I ever saw there was a Metallica concert, and a few motorcross events.
Monkeyface24 Barry Sanders was one of, if not the greatest running backs of all time. Must of been great watching him play, sad I never got to experience it.
numberonealcove Please don't. I disagree because I don't believe anything actually happened at the Silverdome worthy of note, which is the clearly the opposite for Detroit. I cringed when I heard the narrator talking about what couldn't be forgotten at the Silverdome. He's right. I wasn't around for it but I haven't forgotten that the Lions made Sanders retire in his prime because they sucked so badly.
That was some amazing riding. The nose manuals were so gnarly, especially on the first ramp and table top. There was so much speed and smooth air on that last jump. Fuck yea!
Been there, done that...in 1975. What a place to see a van show. The era where guys decked out their vans w murals on the side and shag (carpet) inside. You gotta remember, when this former beauty was built, all there was was Tiger stadium and that ugly indoor arena deep in the city where the Pistons played. This baby was sparkling beautiful!! But so far away from the heart of Detroit. With its bright white/silver dome you could see from at least a mile away because it was built in the middle of nowhere! A country Kitchen restaurant the only place to eat nearby. It died so young. It could be a movie studio with a little imagination. Or maybe the world's best destination skateboard / BMX park. The stadium waits for someone with imagination.
this edit is gnar but the voice over hahaha "I'll always remember what was achieved here blah blah blah " It was home to the Detroit Lions they blow and blew, infamous for grasping defeat from the jaws of vicotry
The Pontiac city commission turned down an offer to buy the Silverdome for $20 million back in 2008. Also, Pontiac spent $1.5 million per year keeping the dome inflated and making it look occupied until it was sold (given away) in 2009 to a Canadian investor for $583,000. To me, the Silverdome is a rotting testament to all that is corrupt in city/county/state government and the pro sports syndicate.
The city wasn't hardly in the condition that its in now, back in 2008. How they managed to do with the dome yearly maintenance, I can't see. Considering everyone in charge had their hand in the city pocket.
This place was still functionable when it sold at auction for 550k or so. This at one time was one of the greatest venues in all of sports.
Best edit from BMX Red Bull still stands 2022
The cinematography is insane

Made me sad just listening. It’s not just this stadium either. Nearly all of Detroit is dilapidated like this.

Fatal Soul I was thinking Mickey Rourke or Peter Cullen (O-Prime). Who the narrator actually be?
Shane Morris Made my skin crawl, fantastic work.
Thanks Hugh! Gave me chills! Haunting!
