I know that art changes with the times and with the audience's tastes and strives to be fresh and relevant. But, "Tosca" is already a very compelling story on its own. Why resort to nudity and beating when Scarpia is already enough of a corrupt villain?
This makes no sense at all.

I think you said the quiet part out loud. This is horrible; makes me wish the orchestra had walked out.

And the children - how did this violence against a naked woman affect them as she walked face forward right to them? Folks this is NOT OPERA. This is a tragedy of leadership at your Opera Company. TRASH NOT ART

Judging JUST from this Te Deum, I think the visual reflection of Scarpia's web of corruption and violence was excellent in itself, but VERY badly realised. To extend the scene beyond the musical climax was particularly daft. Victims don't just get up and wander off, and anyway, Scarpia doesn't beat women - he fantasises about them responding to him and takes them by force as necessary. The school uniforms were likewise irrelevant to good, old-fashioned police brutality. I imagine the rest of the production might have had a strong impact live, but suspect it horrified for all the wrong reasons!

I would have loved to be a fly on the wall when this idiot director explained his concept to the management and cast. No self-respecting singer should allow him/herself to be involved in such a travesty. Must have been a sale on toilet paper.

Just what we need - a bug-eyed, overacting buffoon of a Scarpia. But he fits right in with this misery. Don't think it's the naked woman crying at the end; it's the audience

I think you have confused ugliness with simplicity, you want to see trash like this just drive through any city with loud music on your car radio, for me I want beauty more and more beauty!
