Thanks for the info. I live just above cottons point in SC and have had tons of hate from the shortboarder crowd. Like you mentioned, I'm one of those people who has short boards, fun boards, long boards, and SUPs and just like the ability to surf in any given condition. My experience at Doheny was near Jetty it's tolerated, a 100 yds further south is surfers. To the point one said you're suppose to be south farther by the other supper's. I thanked him for the advice but my skill level is not at head high yet.

Most of them have, maybe only a few have not. This is 7 minutes of video from a whole two days of SUP racing. All the races started and ended on the beach but some traveled as much as 9.5 miles. Most of the race was open flat ocean so a faster/longer board was needed for overall speed. Going fast for the distance and then crashing in the surf was still much faster overall than surfing the waves but going slow in the open ocean.
Even the top three ranked paddlers in the world, guys who have surfed Jaws like Kai Lenny, took a beating. When you're on a 12'6" or 14' board with lots of volume and no rocker you're going to eat it.

Hey Jeffrey, I just bought a SUP ATX 10'6 surfing style SUP to use in the San Clemente/Dana Point area for surfing. What the hell is up with all these hateful opinions towards SUPs? Where can one go to SUP surf without all these mouth breathers giving you crap? I want to avoid getting in a confrontation out on the water. It's like these commenters have a fatwa against SUPers. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
christian seely I'd say part of the hate is just RUclips in general, the comments tend to get negative. Also people love to talk big online, you'll see some hate directed at SUP surfing in the line up but much less than online. Many people that love the surf have surfboards, longboards and also a SUP they surf, when you're at a punchy beachbreak of the surf is great you ride your shortboards, when you're at a mellow point or the surf is just fun you might ride something longer and when is really small you pay on your SUP. Other people stick to just one size board and some of those people hate on others that ride something different. Doheny and Old Mans tend to have a good mix of longboards and SUP surfers playing well together. Have fun out there!

This tournament is just plain stupid.... I do SUP but not in close proximity to anyone esle and I'm mindful of who is around me... I use to go out and jump on my 5'8 and my 6'0" which i still have and use occasionally... But now with my back problems it makes it really hard for me to use those two boards.....I do feel like a kook when I'm out on my SUP sometimes not always or when young kids laugh at me. Lol.. as a grom that grew up surfing creek this is saddening for our break. The locals that I look up to and have taken care of me since I was a young guy are so saddened by this as well. These guys do a lot of work to make sure our beach is clean and no kooks show up but this is like a fucking kook convention! It's too bad I just left for college a couple months ago cause I would've enjoyed putting "battle of the paddle is gay" stickers on every one's car.
