this is THE greatest surf video of all time. laird is the ultimate god of surfing. just complete mastery over the water, not a single droplet out of place. perfectly balanced. going backwards below the curl, walking the nose, digging the paddle, swapping seamlessly between alpha greek god power stance and graceful ballerina trimming stance within a single turn, handling the 11 foot boat sized paddle board like a delicate calligraphy brush we are graced

I was sitting on the point bluff at Ho’okipa late 1990s, absolutely thrashed from windsurfing 30+ knots and DOH waves. Suddenly Laird comes screaming downwind on one of the early true race SUP boards - probably 18 footer. Without blinking he rounds the point and drops in on the biggest wave of the day, rides it all the way down the line to Middles (again, on a race board, not a surf SUP), casually kicks out and continues downwind to Sprecks. He just operates at another level.
He never loses touch with the water - amazing born to surf, dude. Proud to say I surfed with him when he did stand up paddle. He's still better than most of regular surfers on the shorties, while surfing a huge stick!!!
i saw a few SUP converts in Virginia Beach back in 2009. I had never really considered this angle of surfing until watching these videos of Lairds. Need to try it...
I know his legacy has been destroyed at this point between SUPing and the fact that literally everyone has ridden Teahupoo now, but you have to admit that he’s doing cool shit in this video. I think people just like to hate on SUPs because they’re sharing the same surf sometimes. Kind of like hikers hated mountain bikers for so long.
I really wish the rest of the surf world could stop the whining about SUP surfing and learn to go out , tear it up and have fun. Thanks Laird, keep up the good work. Maybe we can all get out and catch waves, learn shove its and have fun, without a bunch of shortboarder scared to try something new talking so much trash !!! Viva Sup Surfing !!!
