It’s definitely deserves to be frowned upon when those adults put on an expectation for others to behave like people they see in media.

About loneliness and homesickness, the disappointment of not being able to have to have the full experience of school and travel, the pressure of having to prove your worth when the language makes everything so much harder for us. The Asian lady at 3:05 is spot on about what it's like to be an Asian foreigner in a more developed Asian country. The locals judge you harsher, because you look kind of like a local but have more difficulty conforming with the culture, your own country might be stereotyped as "poor" hence people look down on you, plus you don't have the white privilege to be considered "beautiful" and get away with occasionally being clueless.

    • @Marko50000

      In a short term i think it's definitely easier to be white than asian (Korea & Japan etc). But on a long-term, looking like a local have it benefits. I feel like white people would always be considered an "outsider" etc whereas asians can fit in more easily. However, i think this mostly apply to asians who were born and raised in western countries bc they mostly have academic degrees whereas asians coming from native countries mostly come to seek manual jobs and stay poor etc..

      @@Marko50000 Asian foreigners are also considered as outsiders. Idk if you are asian or not but when I came to Korea as a Japanese, it was not easy because people didn’t really trust me. Some Koreans were uncomfortable when I said that I was Japanese. Of course in the street, you not gonna have weird look on you because they will assume that you are local, but when you start to speak, they definitely won’t see you as one of them. Of course it’s the same in Japan so it’s pretty cheeky of saying that Koreans only value others Koreans...
      And for my white friend, it was not different of me. I felt like we both were treated the same, she just receive more compliment for her exotic look of course, but in work area we both were treated as total outsider, which is understandable too.

    About the "harsh" korean education system, it's only up until highschool. In korean culture, the adults want their children to attend excellent universities (for both the child's future and for their public image). And since everyone thinks the same way, the competition for uni entry exams is harsh and demanding. That's why people push the children to study as hard as possible in highschool, and when they finally enter the uni, it's party-time basically.
    That's why international uni (and higher) students dont really see the harsh education system (which is the cause of high suicide rates amongst students)

    The number of people looking down on those who have found interest in Korea because of K-drama and kpop is disgusting honestly. Yea, I like BTS and yeah I enjoy watching K-dramas, but thanks to them I've become more interested in Korea, its culture, food, language, history and people. I watch K-News and variety shows. I know S.Korea's not perfect that's why even when I decide to live in Korea it won't be long-term because I'm familiar with the work culture, the beauty standards etc. I could not handle the stress of living there but I know it'll still be a valuable experience if I do. It's so annoying being looked down upon just because of that, I'm genuinely disappointed in people.

    • @lmaoitsover
      @lmaoitsover 3 года назад +9

      The thing is that Kpop / Kdrama fans don't actually love the country for the "food and the culture/history" as they keep telling themselves - because that directly contradicts their own personal values. As you said yourself, you know that Korea is not perfect and you wouldn't handle living here long term, that's why you and other "K-wave" fans actually don't like Korea for being Korea, you like a romanticized image of Korea. In the average Korean language class at a Korean university, the majority of girls there are Kpop/kdrama fans, and had you taken them on a "cultural" tour of the country rather than talking about Korean entertainment, they'd be bored to death. I've seen it happen multiple times, none of these people love the country for the sake of loving the country.

      @@lmaoitsover Your bias is showing immensely. "As they keep telling themselves", " A romanticized version of Korea". Thanks for the generalisation 🤩 Yea, I'll decide to invest time and money into learning Korean to talk about kpop and kdramas in class 🤢🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ But the thing is even if teachers use these methods to teach the language - why does it matter? Learning about a new culture and language should be encouraged instead of looked down upon because it doesn't align with your standards of being interested in a different country! I'm not denying the few that fetishise the country and it's people but it bothers me how all K-wave fans are looked at with this one lens.

      @@rozhin6055 i literally brought up statistics referring to the avg korean lang class (you can look this up easily), and you're saying im generalizing. Please edit your comment you seem braindead. Second of all, its not that it doesnt align with my standards. Its that it doesnt align with the standards of reality. Why do you think the majority of k wave fans cant handle long term living in this country? Its cause they love the image korea exports to them, not the image korea actually is. Had they actually loved the country they'd sit there and listen to cultural classes rather than talking which oppa is more handsome. Do you watch an episode of Friends and think thats what the US is ??

I will not stay long-term because as a woman I do not enjoy the gender pay gap or as a human the stressful work culture, the ridiculous beauty standards, the racism towards POC or just how judgmental people can be regarding everything. You calling me "brain-dead" will not make your argument stronger and please link your sources here although I doubt they are unbiased. And yes there are many of us who enjoy learning about Korean history and culture instead of talking about kpop or our "oppas" 🤢 try being open-minded and opening your eyes instead of sourcing one article who agrees with your "opinion".
