Yikes. I’ve never heard any of that. Usually I don’t like reaching 20 years in the past to dig up dirt on people, but it doesn’t seem like she ever apologized or even stopped. Totally not the point, but what’s with buzzfeed using the full n word over and over? I know they’re quoting, but let’s not.
WOW. I hope all the people that watch this video also read this article. I was a teen in the 00s and I barely remember any of this bc I was anti-Paris Hilton in general back then and avoided news abt her. But more recently I have been kind of into her rebrand. So. Definitely needed this reminder. It’s really something that she goes in on Pink yet way more recently Paris: “went on to accuse the women who’d accused Trump of SAing them as ‘just trying to get attention and get fame.’” And all the racism and homophobia. HUGE YIKES
*and antisemitism! Which is a form of racism. Paris does have valid points about misogyny but yeaaaah. It’s unfortunate that she’s profiting off of that without making amends (in a meaningful way) for past contributions to oppression in society.

You know, I'ts admirable how she can forgive her parents/ family for what they did to her. I don't think I would be able to.
How would you handle your daughter who was clearly breaking rules sneaking out. They tried to protect her from the very things that happened to her. Maybe more intensive counseling? She broke rules and snuck out and had no respect for her parents boundaries. How terrifying for her parents to have your beautiful daughter out mingling with predators and putting herself in dangerous situations? I don't think her parents meant her harm they were desperate.

@@katherinequesada7382 As someone who was sent into the troubled teen industry (specifically wilderness and residential) it is truly a disgusting and vial system. I was physically and emotionally abused, violated, starved, drugged and sedated and more for 5 months, I had to fundamentally change there to deal with all of the trauma I experienced. It was submit to survive. My friends have been sexually assaulted and groomed in these places. To make excuses for the parents who send their kids to these institutions only perpetuates how corrupt the industry is. I know that u might not know much about these places but I really beg you, before making excuses for or defending this system please think about the kids who have been killed and traumatized for life by being in it.

There is no chance, the industry makes MILLIONS and is so engrained into our society that some of these programs get government funding and CPS sends kids to them. My sister’s mom sent her to one where they shackled the kids and fed them beats from a can. It took a judge a full YEAR to finally let us take her from there, and only after my sister was able to speak with him personally and explain the situation. The program was shut down a few YEARS later and the owners just went one state over and started again.
I was in a boarding school for troubled teens and it probably saved my life. I know that I was extremely lucky but some of them can definitively help teens with bad family situations. I don't live in the US but most of my friends were scared when they first arrived because they had only heard about these horrific stories. There should be a lot more regulations though because kids deserve a safe space.

"Note to Carter: Birthday rat." is I think my favorite phrase from the whole book. The whole book, though, makes me want to just sit down and have just a very chill conversation with her. She seems very down-to-earth and I just think it's be interesting to talk to her, as someone who has gone through some similar experiences.
Also, fun fact! Paris was in one of my personal favorite slasher movies, House of Wax (2005)! Iirc, she had a whole ad campaign with shirts that that said something like "watch Paris die" and I wish I owned one of them.

Yesss, my cousin and I rented the DVD of House of Wax at the time, specifically to watch Paris in it, super fun watch honestly, I didn't know she had shirts made for it, fucking iconic.
Tbh I didn't really like House of Wax, but her final scene is pretty intense.

16:51 This part is so sad, SHE is trying to understand why her parents put her in those schools, and her mom knows the pain it caused Paris, but her mom won't say sorry to her, she won't take some responsibility for this trauma to help Paris heal. And that Paris won't push the issue with her because she doesn't want to be separated from her family and instead just tells them she love them. Damn, that is so sad, it feels lonely, lonely but with your family, like they aren't seeing her.
I watched Paris's special, can't remember what it's called. Her mom and sister don't look good in it. They are just plain unkind to her, like Paris is always trying to belong with them, and she can never do it.
She may have grown up with money, but her life has many real sad moments. Those schools of abuse she went to, I can't imagine the trauma that caused her. Her documentary, i think it's "This is Paris", is really good, sad, but good.

Maybe more extensive counseling may have helped, but some people have to learn the hard way. I believe her parents tried to control the outcome of her bad decisions, but again , people have to learn from the school of hard knocks. Either way, she lives a blessed life, having been born into wealth and privilege. How about owning her part in all that happened to her? She put her parents in a terrible position by her disobedience and defiance.

I wasn't there to witness what happened first hand, so I'm speculating just like everyone else. I think she's beautiful and classy. I have a problem with her behavior as a teen. I feel empathy for her Mom who tried desperately to protect her from the bad things that happened to her. She made really bad choices that put her in danger. I haven't heard her own her part in it. She was out of control as a young person. I hope her children don't put her through what her poor mom went through. The bad things that happened to her were the result of bad choices she made. I'm not saying anyone deserves awful things to happen to them but use good judgment and avoid those situations that put you in harms way.

You’re saying (even if you’re not trying to) she was a bad teen that stressed/worried her parents so she brought trauma on herself, and her parent are the real victims. As a parent I get it’s hard to see your kid throw there life away, but constantly sending your child to a place they’ve told you is abusing them, they keep running away with others, and later you see that one of those places was closed down due to being involved in the death of kids yet still not being able to give an apology years later for not believing her is down right despicable. Then after all that trauma they just send her to places that are even worse for years until she aged out. At that point they gave up on her. On loving her, empathizing with her, parenting her, and as a parent that’s never okay (if your kids didn’t do heinous crimes). Its okay to see the parents pov and sympathize/empathize with what they were dealing with at that time but victim blaming is never okay. The real question in general is would you do this to your child? and that answer says a lot.

I feel truly awful for everything Paris had to endure. I also can't forget her decades-long history of extreme racism, homophobia, and anti-semitism. The Paris Hilton re-brand era has been really good at making the public forget about her problematic history. It's difficult to balance feeling truly sorry for everything someone went through while also not being able to forgive their hatefulness, because truly in that regard I don't think she's changed at all. She literally voted for Trump.
She really wants us to think she's a different person now, but I'm just not convinced.

I wish she'd made more than a vague mention of her history of making racist, homophobic, and xenophobic comments. It's hard to believe she actually regrets the horrific things she has said (repeatedly saying the hard R N word, saying gay men are disgusting and all have aids, etc) when she has barely acknowledged that she did it.

I was late diagnosed with adhd in my 30s, and spending the majority of my life undiagnosed had such negative repurcussions. I have such a soft spot for anyone with adhd as a result. It's one of those invisible things you struggle with, while being labeled lazy, messy, spacey, weird, etc. While I've never been a Paris stan, I thought most jokes about her were just low hanging fruit. Good for her for not letting so much bullying and objectifying and sexual assault keep her down. I don't know that I could survive all of that.

All of my chosen family and close friends are neurodivergent or living with mental illness and knowing their un-masked selves who feel comfortable and safe around me really makes me wonder what ways Paris could have been able to express herself in her teens and 20's if she had been respected, her creativity nourished, and felt safety instead of constant fear and public scrutiny. Thank you for reading and sharing this, I really hope there's more writing in her future because I got chills too from some of those excerpts. This is such a full reminder of how 20 years makes such a difference in society.

I really think memoirs like this are necessary bc I don't think people who weren't female-identifying teens in the 00's truly realize how consistently that demographic was gaslit and attacked.
As much as Paris was a target for her public persona, society didn't really want her to be anything else. The only really "acceptable" thing for women in pop culture to do at the time was attack women like Paris and honestly, she was too hot to be taken seriously as an "alternative girl". Pop culture was begging for a Paris bc our entertainment was based around creating people like her just for the joy of tearing them down. When The Simple Life premiered it was insanely popular and the irony was everyone watching it thinking they were the smart ones laughing at idiots.
I was also a victim of the troubled teen industry for three years, so I wanted to come here and say I really do appreciate your sensitivity and empathy on the matter ❤
I think it's interesting that I had like no idea that she went through this stuff and she's also the prime of example of showing she cares because going against those schools after experiencing so much abuse and society having a skewed perception of you is just admirable, honestly. It takes so much strength and also self-reflection to go against people like that.

You know, the "finest girl" of eight grade reminded me how at my school my classmates were suggesting to choose me as the one with the biggest chest. I was around 14-15. That never resulted on anything but I am just now realizing how fucked up that was.

For context, the whole “stealing kids in the middle of the night” was done INTENTIONALLY to “scare them straight”. It was TRAUMATIZING to the kids affected, and they have finally stopped doing it.

men are everywhere + men in a position of power don't face the consequences of their actions so, unfortunately, I'm not surprised
Sadly You can nvr assume rich ppl aren't exposed to the most fu¢ked up/ heinous crimes. Especially in Hollyweird, America's capital of pedos, they have enough money, power and influence to pay off anyone to turn a blind eye- They can literally get away with anything.😡 And it's about 50% of parents that are 'good' parents. Money doesn't make you a 'good' or 'perfect' parent, neglect/abuse in any form doesn't discriminate.
The entire "school for troubled teens" industry is terrifying but their preference for taking kids in the middle of the night is problematic. Like, that sounds traumatic in the best cases. Imagine an SA survivor going through that 😢.
Also, I don't know what I would do in her parents situation. I want to believe I'd see my kid's suffering and stop it but the schools do everything they can to destroy the trust between parents and their kids and are told repeatedly that the fact their kids run away and claim they're being abused just proves how troubled they are and how much they need the school.

I think she has done well to not just be a wealthy socialite but she is, and always has been more privileged than most people and always had the security of affluence, generational wealth and power. I think she's clever for making herself even a miniscule of relatable but she still upholds the patriarchy and white supremacy by being a super capitalist and having her main life goal being becoming a billionaire. Something I think is gross to want and/or ridiculously out of touch (and actually completely unrelatable).
I appreciate her work with teen camps and pushing for more protective laws. She is a very likeable character and she's brilliantly entertaining. But I can't not highlight her massive flaws.

It's not often I am convinced to buy a book but I am convinced!
This book sounds so good and you talking about the way the book is wrote because of ADHD really hit me because I am pretty sure I have ADHD I was diagnosed as a child and I was in pretty hard denial about it (because it ruined school for me!) And things like you talking about the way the book was written really makes me feel less alone during a time where I feel overwhelmingly alone
I see people online talk about their ADHD and I can't relate at all sometimes but there is the rare time where I can relate and it hits me so deeply
I recently went to a doctor for the first time since I was 7 and I am 23 and I went off on 100 different stories to explain everything I talked about and my husband later told me that I went off on a lot of tangents
He didn't mean to hurt my feelings he was just trying to be helpful but it hurt so bad because I haven't been able to talk to anyone but him and my mom for 5 years and I feel like I have forgotten how to talk to people and I have no idea how to talk without going on tangents!

You know what? I have a friend who was raped when she wasn't even 10 years old, her family blamed her, she had to deal with her anxiety and depression without the money to buy her expensive treatment. You know what my friend never did? She was never racist.
I'm not saying Paris wasn't a victim.
I am saying that victims can also be abusers. And general apologies are just...general. Accountability is more than that.
I honestly think we have women who have made a huge impact on society--from fighting for social justice, to art creators, to scientists--who do not get a hundreth of the amount of love, adoration and excuses that Paris get. I am not interested in this woman. I am interested in quieter women who are shaping our lives, surviving trauma and misogyny without Paris's funds, and are not racist. But we all decide how we spend our time.

I am a teacher in Provo, and I always end up with a student or two that gets sent to Provo Canyon or other facilities like it and it breaks my heart. When the kids get back, I just shower them in kindness and understanding and just do everything I can to make sure they are okay.

Carley, have you read Diary of a Void by Emi Yagi? I think you'll really like it, it's a brilliant, sardonic deconstruction of overwork and misogyny in Japanese corporate life, and it offers a lot of food for thought! It was one of my favourites of last year, for what it's worth.

Just listening to this recap gave me so many chills and teary eyed moments, I literally have read 1 memoir and it was in middle school but I'm about to order this. I'm so happy she can speak freely now about her experiences, Paris is the definition of girlboss.
Also relate so fucking much to her explanation of her adhd and how if affects her writing style, I fuckin love a good manic run on sentence and using dashes at any given opportunity 😍

My sister’s mom sent her to one of those “behavioral adjustment” programs, but her’s was “Christian”. She was shackled and fed beats from a can, and even though the program was shut down after an investigation, the owners opened another “camp” in another state and are still doing the same shit.
I’m so sorry your sister and so many others have had to go though these things. I’ll never understand how people think cruelty and abuse will do anything other than cause harm.
