In 1989, I graduated from one of the New York State BMPTC Police Academies. On Graduation Day, my Father presented me with a brand new S&W 6906. It was the same firearm he was carrying as a Senior Special Agent with the former US Customs Service (Treasury). I am now retired after a thirty-four year Law Enforcement Career (County, State, and last twenty-one years, Federal), and I still own my 6906. It is the only pistol I will never sell. It served me well and I still take it out occasionally to the range. By the way, I believe those C.A.I. imports were originally exported to Israel and then re-imported back to the States as "Police Surplus" by C.A.I.
I graduated in 1996 Zone 5 police Academy in Albany . I'm retired thank God. As it's a shit hole and I would not make that same choice in today's world..

I carry a different Gen 3 S&W 9mm. Excellent pistols. I recommend also swapping out the recoil spring for new besides replacing the fragile, brittle grips. I replaced my grips with a Houge Rubber Grip Panels although they also make wooden panels. Also, the S&W factory magazines are extremely hard to come by and I was seeing $90 for used magazines on the secondary market. I am externally happy to say that I bought ProMag replacement magazines for about $20 each, and they work! Not nearly as elegant as the originals, but they work! Lifetime guarantee from ProMag, but after shooting them all many times I feel very confident using them as carry-magazines.
Easily one of my favorite carry pieces. Some nights sights, a little fluff and buff, and removal of the mag safety, and it is a criminally forgotten piece.
That's what I did to mine. Made a preformance center package. 1 17rd mag with grip extension, 1 standard 12rd mag, and one 12rd flush fit mag without pinky grip. Plus some trijicons
Did someone say 3rd gen?!? 5906, 5906TSW, 915, 6906, 3913, 3913LS, 4006CHP, 4026, 4516, 457, and 1006 in my stable so far! The things rock, the 9mm in a 5906 has mouse-fart recoil, and they will feed anything. Reliable, accurate enough, and the guns can double as boat anchors.
Great video! I was looking for a conceal carry a bit smaller than my P229 Elite and after testing the 6906's trigger at my local gun store I was like, no way! This is right up there with the SIG's SRT trigger! So this gun is now my EDC and I love it. I bought it some nice wood grips and looks and feels phenomenal!
Thanks for the review. I have one in my hands right now. I bought it new a couple of decades ago. I have a limited number of rounds through it. I was going to go trade it in for a more modern pistol. Now I think I'll keep it. Thanks again.
Beautiful piece. I always wanted one or 2. I'd like to see you perform a back to back comparison at the range with the 228 and the 26 testing recoil and accuracy. Great comparison and video, thank you. 228 and 26 are great choices in pistols as well.
I have the 6906 and let me tell you it was a long wait and I paid a fair price. It feels good in the hand and it carries well. Next is the SIG P226 9mm.
Nice gun, I carried one for a couple of years and it always shot great with no malfunctions. I wish I would have kept this one along with my model 66 revolver!
One of my local gun shops has the single stack d a o version of this gun Unfortunately as far as I can tell no quality magazine manufacturers still make magazines for it
Great gun. Goes bang every time. Thousands of rounds with ZERO issues. More accurate than me. Wish it was a single only but if you keep it on safe it’s going to very hard for an unauthorized person to shoot.
I carried my 6906 for close to 30 years , I only recently switched to a polymer striker fire for CCW. ( solely because of the 18 round capacity ). Otherwise the 6906 would still be on my hip .
I just love those old 3rd gen S&Ws - but there are so few of them that are legal here in Denmark, because of our caliber restrictions (rules out the 10mm ones) and minimum length requirements (minimum 21 cm total, so rules out everything but the 4506 and similar sized ones. If I had access to compact 3rd gens at this price, I would have my smith cut one for an Aimpoint ACRO, just because.
In general, I don't like the mag safety either (I removed it on my .22 for instance), but for a carry or duty gun it may make sense if you want a quick way to disable the gun in a struggle where you may lose control of it. Just drop the mag to avoid getting shot with your own gun.
Ask an experienced shooter to try it and see how it hits for them. They are an acquired skill with the DA/SA transition. And consider replacing the recoil spring; that might dampen recoil noticeably.
I was issued one of these as my duty pistol when I joined my police department back in 2000. I won't say I fell in love with it -- and to be fair, I had never been a fan of S&W autos, much as I have always liked their revolvers -- but I shot that gun very extensively during the academy, and for several years thereafter. I never had a malfunction from it, and it was very accurate. It was a great pistol. I wish I still had it, but when the department replaced it with a DAO S&W 5946 TSW -- which I _hated_ -- the 6906s were sold back to Smith & Wesson, who doubtless sold them somewhere as police surplus guns. That 5946 was a piece of junk. I was issued three different ones, because the first two were unreliable. While I had it, I had decided that if I got into a situation where I had to use my sidearm, I was going to draw my backup gun. I didn't trust the 5946. It was _that_ bad. Thankfully, we didn't have those very long. Complaints about the gun were so pervasive in the department that we soon replaced them with Glock 17s, which were great guns, of course. I do wish I'd had the opportunity to buy the gun I carried when I started out in my LEO career though. One of these days I may have to find one of these for sale and get it. I must disagree about the magazine safety. I never minded the one on this gun. Unlike the one on the Browning Hi Power, this one doesn't effect either the trigger pull or the ability of the magazine to drop free. The S&W one has a totally different mechanical design, and it really isn't something I noticed. Just because there hasn't _yet_ been a case where that has been an issue in court doesn't mean there never will be. I've known lots of prosecutors, and if you ever found yourself in court after a defensive shooting, I _cannot_ conceive of a prosecutor who would not use the fact that you removed a factory-installed safety device against you during the trial, to make you look more like some reckless, trigger-happy cowboy. If you are in court having to defend yourself after using deadly force, you are going to have enough problems to worry about, and I see absolutely _NO_ upside whatsoever to handing your prosecutor another argument to use against you during the trial. If you only mean to use the gun as a range toy... well sure, then it shouldn't be a problem. But as a carry gun, _nyet!_ I wouldn't. This is where someone usually chimes in "well if it's a 'good shoot' then it will never come up." Sorry, but if you ever get charged, it will be precisely because someone with authority decided that it _wasn't_ a "good shoot." Again, in any self-defense situation in which you find yourself, there are going to be numerous factors totally beyond your control. This is one totally within your control. If the magazine safety is something that really bothers you, get a gun that wasn't made with one; there are loads of them out there. Again, I see absolutely _NO_ upside whatsoever to handing your prosecutor another argument to use against you during the trial. Also on that topic... Consider that if you have been charged, even if you have been acquitted, the heirs of the criminal you shot dead, or the criminal himself if he survived can take you to civil court where the burden of proof is much lower, and the issue may have a chance to come up again.
