The Vietnamese girl in the video has a southern accent. I have a northern accent, so I might not have guessed she said the word "Khách" (Customer) without looking at the subtitles.
I am from the north and I think it’s pronounced like “khắt”. I am curious about the southern people saying “khách hàng vừa khắt khe vừa nghiêm khắc”. Just a sentence I made up to see how they say it and if there is any difference.
@@DrVictorVasconcelos Nope. Vietnamese nh- as an initial consonant is exactly like Portuguese. But as a final -nh, it's -n or -ng depending on the dialect and the vowel is modified. Vietnamese ng is not the same.
I can totally understand how they feel trying to pronounce these words 😭 Indonesian here! I absolutely love Vietnam-can’t get enough of the food. I’ve been there so many times, exploring everything from Cần Thơ in the Mekong Delta to the hill station of Đà Lạt, the ancient city of Huế, and even hiking all the way up to the peak of Phan Xi Păn. But there’s one thing I just can’t do: pronounce Vietnamese words. 😭 I have amazing friends in Vietnam, and I can’t even get their names right! It’s so frustrating. Tonal languages are just way too hard for me. 😂
Trust me, as a Vietnamese, we all have difficulty understanding some dialects sometimes. The Huế dialect can be a bit more difficult, but Nghệ An is the hardest.

As a Southern Vietnamese, i don't realize that the Southern accent is hard until I read the comments. Any Vietnamese I know can understand Southern accent easily, while Southern Vietnamese are struggling to understand the Northern and Central accents. To compare, the Southern accent is like the U.S. English, which everyone can understand. The Northern accent is like British English, which every word is pronounced correctly, maybe a little hard to understand for Southern Vietnamese, but we can still understand if we focus. The Central accent is Scottish English, which, unless you're from central, you can understand like 10%, and the rest 90% is guessing, and that's for Vietnamese only. If you're a foreigner trying to learn Central accent, i wish you luck cause I already give up. That's like a completely different language.

I think it more so because our language is kinda niche, only people interested in Vietnam or want to work/live here learn it. We don't have as much soft power (cultural influence) as Thai or Chinese which while is a harder langauges, there more incentive to learn them.
BD, Aska is AMAZING. Her pronunciation is awesome, and even though being fed with distorted info, she somehow (magically) drove the thing all the way back to (almost) right track.
Christina is probably the one that pronounces them best out of the pact, albeit she is also the first. She got the tone more or less correct which is probably the most difficult part of Vietnamese. Vietnamese is challenging for most foreigner to speak including other asian nation. Mandarin and Cantonese speaker probably have the easiest time learning speaking but probably will struggle with reading/writing since we use latin alphabet. Some dialect/accent in Vietnamese is also harder to learn then other, might be bias as northerner but i think the northern accent is easier to learn then southern accent (which i assume Jenny was speaking). Northern accent use less r sound and less roll so would like Rượu is pronounce more like Diệu which is alot easier to pronounce. Rau pronounce as Dau. One thing i notice is people can't pronounce the Đ which pronounce like the D in the english word Do.
Depends on which you grew up with. Northern dialects have glottal stop tones which make it harder to mimick than Southern tones which are contour. But Northern reading is more straightforward.
it's basically equal in the south our 'v' sounds becomes 'd' and also we don't distinguish hỏi and ngã accent while in the north they do. in the north, tr & ch merge. in the south, ng and n at the end of words merge.

The tone I think people should visualize it will help much more. there is 5 total, 1)neutral, there is no up or down. 2)down, think of like a leaf glide downward slowly.3) up. think of the wind pick up the leaf, it flying up and quick, 4) heavy, thinking of the heavy object, maybe a stone, falling down and it hit the ground. that is when the tone is. Give it the impact of heavy, like you catch a fruit fall into your hand. and 5) ngã / fall over. thinking about object miss your hand and now bounce on the ground and tumble on it.

Southern pronunciation sucks. The Vinh accent ought to be introduced as standard adding a different pronunciation between "gi" and "d" (now merged). That´s my meaning as a German reading Vietnamese folk tales for fun (and no further affiliation to Vietnam, just interest).

I’m not a native to Vietnam but both of my parents are and the send me to school to learn more Vietnamese (cause 30% of what I know just spawned into my head but they send me to learn more) and what I’ve learned is if it’s the right dialect the easiest way to pronounce something is to look at the symbols over the letters/words. “Nặng” (shown with an o) (ọ) sounds like and actually means something along the lines of “heavy” which means you’re voice will go deep and end heavy. The next one is “Sắc” (ó). It goes upward from left to right which means it will be pronounced with a higher tone. Next is “Huyền” (ò) and I’m not sure how to explain this one but it is the opposite of sắc where instead of going upwards left to right it goes downwards. This means you pronounce it in a lower voice but not too deep like nặng sort of like a depressed voice. Next is “Hỏi” (ỏ) and your voice basically goes up and then down but the down is sort of faint. Last is Ngã (õ) which goes up and down like a roller coaster. You have to learn how to pronounce it like you have to learn how to roll your double rr in Spanish but it’s possible and sounds good (for an example search up milk and you’ll hear the roller coaster like sound up and down and up and down). Well that’s the 5 tones in Vietnamese made somewhat easy by a half Vietnamese guy? Also in some dialects Huyền and Ngã sound similar and/or identical so you may be mistaken sometimes.
I like this set up. It actually partially simulates how languages (mainly vocabulary) evolves and how loanwords change over time. Vietnamese is so damn hard to learn. I'd like to see an African version (based on whatever language family or language)... But I know how biased these channels are. 🤔
The Korean lady is clearly struggling with pronounciation; Because the lack some of the sounds, I suppose. The Hindi speaker is also struggling, this shouldn't happen, as Devanagari has a lot of rare sounds but they aren't used in daily life.
As a Vietnamese who can speak Vietnamese fluently with a Northern dialect, writing "alcohol" in Vietnamese was an absolute nightmare because of how different it is to spell it and to pronounce it.

Alot different meaning hán tự(漢字) used every day by vietnam language and madarin,.. We have alot of han word pronunciation like madarin and different with cantonese like:cao高,hoa花,an安,kết hôn,結婚.... Meanwhile the word 滅is pronounced as diệt and not similar with cantonese and madarin 😂😂
kết hôn sounds totally like Teochew/ Hokkien/ Taiwanese (Minnan languages). A lot of Chinese words that start with "m" (or historically [mj] seem to drop the [m] to just become a "y" sound, so it becomes [z] in the north. Like 名 is danh & 民 is dân LOL.

Most languages use ng as an ending consonant only, but rarely for beginning, like nga, ngo. It appears that very few languages do like this, such as Vietnamese, Thai, Cantonese and some southern Chinese languages
Many Austronesian, Sino-Tibetan and Austroasiatic languages have it, also Khmer, Burmese, languages in Africa and Albanian which is rare for Europe. And also some languages in Siberia
To be honest, as a native I think the Southern dialect and accent is much more difficult for foreigners if they're new, but once they're used to it it's gonna be impossible for them to understand our Northern accent lol

Southern Vietnamese here, just saying, but Jenny translated some of the words slightly wrong. For the "kinh tế đối ngoại", its more accurate to translate into "foreign economic affairs" as "kinh tế" means economy and "đối ngoại" means foreign affairs. For "người", id says it means person rather than people as it usually indicate one individual. And "rượu" can be understand as alcohol drink, but alcohol in Vietnamese is "cồn", "rượu" is usually referred to wine.
ngl Southern dialect is more difficult to understand than the Northern counterpart (the only dialect allowed in formal documents). So those who are lucky enough to learn Vietnamese from a Northern Vietnamese person will actually be able to learn this language more easily. After that, if you wanna learn Southern dialect, you can easily continue to do so if you have mastered the language to some point.

Bro, basically there are no any 'ORIGINAL ACCENT' or ' STANDARD VIETNAMESE'. Every accent has each flaws in pronunciation and no any accent is perfect correct. Even for the word rượu, the north will be hard to pronounce R sound clearly like the south. Instead, they will pronounce clearly the part ượu. So it's just simply depend on learner. Like we choose between British or American accent in english bro.

The Nguyen moved further south, took over the land of the ancient Khmer, and tried to recruit many native people here as well as South Chinese to counter the North, led by the Trinh. South Vietnam was only incorporated into Vietnam about 200 years ago. Please go to wiki to read about "Nam tiến" or "southward advance" to see exactly the year when South Vietnam regions (nowadays) became Vietnam. Later, King Minh Mạng tried to push many native people in the Mekong Delta to speak Vietnamese and wear áo dài. How DARE you say South Vietnamese accent is original accent of Kinh Vietnamese ?
This guy is an idiot language purist. There is no such thing as one standard Vietnamese spoken form. It depends on where in the country you are from. The North is based on Hanoi. The Central is based on Hue. The South is based on Saigon. Even in the North people do not pronounce rượu properly according to the spelling. The spelling is just a rough guide, to bridge all dialects. There is no living dialect that is pure. Every dialect has undergone changes and admixture. It’s like saying Americans or Australians don’t speak proper English.

to learn the language faster, I recommend some underrated artists: 52 hz, mỹ mỹ, phương ly, vstra, wren evans, tlinh, trọng hiếu (not all just some personal favorites)
Actually, it sounds very different in different Viet regions. For example, for me (Northern region), I pronounce "rượu" as "diệu". Also, there are many regions where lisp or pronounciation-inability is common, which makes "ru-wu" actually not a too inaccurate pronunciation 😋✨
This reminds me when I learned Español, whenever I felt Español is too hard, I just told myself that maybe somewhere in the world there's a person struggling to learn Dưa (Melon), Dứa (Pineapple) and Dừa (Coconut), which is 3 different fruits but with almost the same word 😂
In this video, contestants from other countries found it difficult to follow from the very first speaker because the pronunciation of the Vietnamese female participant in the video seems to be from the southern region, or possibly the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The pronunciation there is not standard in terms of intonation or tone. If you're Vietnamese, this accent is very endearing and easy to understand, but for someone learning Vietnamese for the first time, it's very challenging to mimic. Honestly speaking, Vietnamese is the most complex language I’ve encountered. However, I’m quite impressed with the Korean participant; she seems to have a keen sense of pronunciation.
I don’t speak Ciernamese, but I immediately recognized what ‘kinh tế dối ngoại’ means because I identified kinh tế is 經濟，and dối ngoại is 對外. Btw, in Mandarin 經濟 is pronounced as ‘jīng jì’，對外 is pronounced as ‘dùi wài’；in Japanese is kei zai and tai gai

I can totally understand how they feel trying to pronounce these words 😭 Indonesian here! I absolutely love Vietnam-can’t get enough of the food. I’ve been there so many times, exploring everything from Cần Thơ in the Mekong Delta to the hill station of Đà Lạt, the ancient city of Huế, and even hiking all the way up to the peak of Phan Xi Păn.
But there’s one thing I just can’t do: pronounce Vietnamese words. 😭 I have amazing friends in Vietnam, and I can’t even get their names right! It’s so frustrating. Tonal languages are just way too hard for me. 😂
Trust me, as a Vietnamese, we all have difficulty understanding some dialects sometimes. The Huế dialect can be a bit more difficult, but Nghệ An is the hardest.

As a Southern Vietnamese, i don't realize that the Southern accent is hard until I read the comments. Any Vietnamese I know can understand Southern accent easily, while Southern Vietnamese are struggling to understand the Northern and Central accents. To compare, the Southern accent is like the U.S. English, which everyone can understand. The Northern accent is like British English, which every word is pronounced correctly, maybe a little hard to understand for Southern Vietnamese, but we can still understand if we focus. The Central accent is Scottish English, which, unless you're from central, you can understand like 10%, and the rest 90% is guessing, and that's for Vietnamese only. If you're a foreigner trying to learn Central accent, i wish you luck cause I already give up. That's like a completely different language.

I think it more so because our language is kinda niche, only people interested in Vietnam or want to work/live here learn it. We don't have as much soft power (cultural influence) as Thai or Chinese which while is a harder langauges, there more incentive to learn them.

Christina is probably the one that pronounces them best out of the pact, albeit she is also the first. She got the tone more or less correct which is probably the most difficult part of Vietnamese. Vietnamese is challenging for most foreigner to speak including other asian nation. Mandarin and Cantonese speaker probably have the easiest time learning speaking but probably will struggle with reading/writing since we use latin alphabet.
Some dialect/accent in Vietnamese is also harder to learn then other, might be bias as northerner but i think the northern accent is easier to learn then southern accent (which i assume Jenny was speaking).
Northern accent use less r sound and less roll so would like Rượu is pronounce more like Diệu which is alot easier to pronounce. Rau pronounce as Dau.
One thing i notice is people can't pronounce the Đ which pronounce like the D in the english word Do.
Depends on which you grew up with. Northern dialects have glottal stop tones which make it harder to mimick than Southern tones which are contour. But Northern reading is more straightforward.

The tone I think people should visualize it will help much more. there is 5 total, 1)neutral, there is no up or down. 2)down, think of like a leaf glide downward slowly.3) up. think of the wind pick up the leaf, it flying up and quick, 4) heavy, thinking of the heavy object, maybe a stone, falling down and it hit the ground. that is when the tone is. Give it the impact of heavy, like you catch a fruit fall into your hand. and 5) ngã / fall over. thinking about object miss your hand and now bounce on the ground and tumble on it.

Southern pronunciation sucks. The Vinh accent ought to be introduced as standard adding a different pronunciation between "gi" and "d" (now merged). That´s my meaning as a German reading Vietnamese folk tales for fun (and no further affiliation to Vietnam, just interest).

I’m not a native to Vietnam but both of my parents are and the send me to school to learn more Vietnamese (cause 30% of what I know just spawned into my head but they send me to learn more) and what I’ve learned is if it’s the right dialect the easiest way to pronounce something is to look at the symbols over the letters/words. “Nặng” (shown with an o) (ọ) sounds like and actually means something along the lines of “heavy” which means you’re voice will go deep and end heavy. The next one is “Sắc” (ó). It goes upward from left to right which means it will be pronounced with a higher tone. Next is “Huyền” (ò) and I’m not sure how to explain this one but it is the opposite of sắc where instead of going upwards left to right it goes downwards. This means you pronounce it in a lower voice but not too deep like nặng sort of like a depressed voice. Next is “Hỏi” (ỏ) and your voice basically goes up and then down but the down is sort of faint. Last is Ngã (õ) which goes up and down like a roller coaster. You have to learn how to pronounce it like you have to learn how to roll your double rr in Spanish but it’s possible and sounds good (for an example search up milk and you’ll hear the roller coaster like sound up and down and up and down). Well that’s the 5 tones in Vietnamese made somewhat easy by a half Vietnamese guy? Also in some dialects Huyền and Ngã sound similar and/or identical so you may be mistaken sometimes.
I like this set up. It actually partially simulates how languages (mainly vocabulary) evolves and how loanwords change over time. Vietnamese is so damn hard to learn.

The Korean lady is clearly struggling with pronounciation; Because the lack some of the sounds, I suppose. The Hindi speaker is also struggling, this shouldn't happen, as Devanagari has a lot of rare sounds but they aren't used in daily life.

kết hôn sounds totally like Teochew/ Hokkien/ Taiwanese (Minnan languages).
A lot of Chinese words that start with "m" (or historically [mj] seem to drop the [m] to just become a "y" sound, so it becomes [z] in the north. Like 名 is danh & 民 is dân LOL.

For the "kinh tế đối ngoại", its more accurate to translate into "foreign economic affairs" as "kinh tế" means economy and "đối ngoại" means foreign affairs. For "người", id says it means person rather than people as it usually indicate one individual. And "rượu" can be understand as alcohol drink, but alcohol in Vietnamese is "cồn", "rượu" is usually referred to wine.

Bro, basically there are no any 'ORIGINAL ACCENT' or ' STANDARD VIETNAMESE'. Every accent has each flaws in pronunciation and no any accent is perfect correct. Even for the word rượu, the north will be hard to pronounce R sound clearly like the south. Instead, they will pronounce clearly the part ượu. So it's just simply depend on learner. This guy is an idiot language purist. There is no such thing as one standard Vietnamese spoken form. It depends on where in the country you are from. The North is based on Hanoi. The Central is based on Hue. The South is based on Saigon.
Even in the North people do not pronounce rượu properly according to the spelling. The spelling is just a rough guide, to bridge all dialects.
There is no living dialect that is pure. Every dialect has undergone changes and admixture. It’s like saying Americans or Australians don’t speak proper English.

Actually, it sounds very different in different Viet regions. For example, for me (Northern region), I pronounce "rượu" as "diệu". Also, there are many regions where lisp or pronounciation-inability is common, which makes "ru-wu" actually not a too inaccurate pronunciation 😋✨
