Andrea this stole my heart . Wow!!!!! I had to smile because I had a situation in our home with a huge finished basement and I had no idea what to do with it ! So I created a vintage movie theater / diner/ icecream shop / general store . Complete with antiques from those kinds of places from the 1940’s! There is movie posters from the 40’s , heavy red velvet curtains on each side of the screen , the general store is filled with antique grocery items . Real advertisements from the 40’s on the wall. Antique gumball machines ( filled ) and the icecream counter is filled with antique candy jars , full of candy ! We even have a diner booth we got at an auction for 10$!!!!!!!! There is old barrels full of taffy , peanuts . There is even an old barrel with a wooden checker board on top , like you used to see old men playing checkers at! My only dream piece I need is an antique cash register for the diner counter . You will appreciate this . There is a sign as you come down the stairs that says “ Dear mom and dad , at Gaga’s and papas we can!” So I completely admire what you did with your space !!!! Very impressed .

The basement turned out awesome! What i love most is that you did it all with your boys in mind for them to actually live in!! From the pillows to make forts from, the bug collection, the lego storage...just ALL of it! It wasn't just done for aesthetic, but it looks like it was done out of love for your boys! How satisfying!

I love, love your laundry space. It’s so adorable. The shade of blue for the cabinets was perfect for the boys play space. It reminds me of denim. Your basement is beautiful. It’s very possible to create a beautiful space and do it on a budget. Thrifting saves so much money. Also, thank goodness your husband is so handy. You’ve saved a ton of money by diy your basement space.

I'm so glad Andrea, that you have a bunch of kids who'll get to share lovely memories together down in that room. My brother was 13 years older than me, so I dont remember ever hanging out with him, apart from at the dinner table, where we weren't supposed to talk cause Dad wanted to watch the news. Made for a very lonely upbringing.

I’m jealous. I wish my husband was that handy. Any renovations we need to do in the house, we have to get a professional for, it’s expensive. So suffice to say we do it in stages. Getting there. But if my husband was handy, he would not have time for himself 🤣🤣

Years ago, we had (from Points), a great Lego Table...the boys would sit for hours on little chairs, building all sorts of creations! Don't have the table but me and the hubs have ALL their Lego! The boys wanted it when they moved out...but we love it here in case we ever have "littles' come over...something fun for them to play with! Love your basement, so cozy!

The basement is fabulous, Andrea. I can see that the space can change with your families changing & growing needs. As your m older children get older and their study becomes more independent they may need a study space seperate from younger siblings. It might make a nice hang out space for your kids as they enter their teens. I always made my teenagers friends welcome as I felt, even though I trusted them, it was better to know where they were, what they are doing & who their friends were. Later on still you may revert it back to a playroom for grandchildren or decide it makes a great spot for family parties. Some day (and quicker that you think) you'll have daughter-in-laws, grandchildren & along with that comes the need for a heap of extra space ❤

I loved your laundry room and recreational space before but now it is the next level of creativity and design. The colour is perfect. Watching this video brought back fond memories of our space when our children would create forts from the sectional and have Lego creations spread through out the room.. Mike is so talented to see a vision and create it. You make a great team. 💕💕

Andrea, it's an absolutely beautiful and cozy space! You and your husband are so creative and talented. I love that you went out of your comfort zone with blue, but it's still a very neutral blue, so I think it would be hard to find anything that would clash. I would most certainly use the basement space for home schooling, although I realize that it takes you away from the main working and cooking area of your home.
Your basement is beautiful! I have to ask though, I lived in NY and we had a basement finished off on a newer home… we ended up having a water situation and had to rip up drywall and carpet… I sold insurance for a living.. please look at your homeowners insurance policy and make sure you have some coverage for water backup of sewers and drains.. if not, it would be worth calling your insurance agent to get a quote. After all that work it would be a shame not to have some sort of coverage, just sayin! If I wasn’t married and old enough to be Mikes mother, I’d be hanging around your house like a black cat just ready to snatch him away!!! 😂 What a blessing to have someone so handy! God Bless y’all ❤

Just wanted to share with you that we have exposed ductwork in our rec room also and we painted it the same colour as the walls. It worked great and blends nicely instead of standing out. TFS🇨🇦🙂

This is a lovely basement! We live in a 1940s cape cod. Our top floor is very rich in colors, lots of plants, moody vibe.
But when we finished the basement we chose to paint the ceiling and leave the ducts exposed. It definitely gives a more modern, industrial vibe, but it is also more kind friendly and meant to be their comfort zone. :)
