So right. First heard The Pot a few years ago. Loved it. Then got more into Tool with Schism, Sober, and Stinkfist (imo their more mainstream sound), then jumped over to Laturalus album and the psychedelic/third eye stuff hit me with Parabol/Parabola and Laturalus. And The Grudge became my favorite for years. Then Fear Inoculum hit and Descending was such an amazing buildup (the first 6 minutes of that song is perfection). Loved Invincible, Pnuema, and Fear Inoculum. And listened to that album everyday for months.
Then i realized i found myself watching reaction videos and realized that I actually love Tool, but I never sat down to listen to their entire discography. So instead of watching TV every night, I'd go put my headphones on (bought really good headphones just for this btw) and listen to one album a night.
10,000 days album hit the spot. Wings for Marie Pt1 and 2, Jesus...that had me in tears. And then Rosetta Stoned hits and I'm caught soooo off guard. I had no idea what I was listening to. But it was the only song where I pushed my headphones more onto my ears and was just frozen listening to it.
Fast forward another year, and it is...without a doubt....my favorite song. The buildup in the 8th minute...something about that final part, just takes me away. And, like you said - my favorite Tool song (because it took time to appreciate it and warm up to Tool's sound. This, imo, is the end of the road. This song is Tool's version of an aged whiskey. You can't appreciate until you get a taste for all the subtleties.
It would've been my least favorite and totally turned me off of Tool if it was my first song. It really needs to be played at the end of your Tool journey. Only then, imo, have your ears and mind been prepped enough.
It's been my favorite Tool song for longer than any other (which I guess means it's my favorite on any given day).

The song is a trip. Once I connected the context of the intro with the song, (before we knew the lyrics) it became one of my favorites. At first I was feeling uneasy and lost when listening to it... like, it didn't go anywhere and I could never settle into a groove. Then I realized that's exactly the point! It's a trip, you can't hold on to anything, you just have to take the ride and let go. The thematic runs through the whole composition and structure (or lack thereof). It's an amazing "concept song".

With this song, the destination is not the point. It's the ride to get there that's important. In regards to not playing this song to introduce people to Tool, while I do tend to agree, in my case, 15 years ago when 10,000 Days was released, I bought the album. It was the first Tool album I ever had, and Rosetta Stoned, one of the most complex songs in history, was my first favorite off that album. Had no fucking idea what it was about, but goddamn the musical ride alone was enough. Think I had that CD in my car for the better part of a year, and yeah, to this day it's still one of my all time favorite pieces of music from anyone.

The best part of this was watching your facial expressions. I feel like I must have made the same types my first time hearing this song. Being shocked, the engaged, then shocked again, then laughing my ass off while at the same time being blown away at how well it was put together. I feel like you really "got it". The humor, the sarcasm, and the intensity of the entire opus. The music is insanely good and Maynard has so much vocal variety. Very much enjoyed! Thanks man. These videos just keep getting better.

This is my take and I'm not sure I'm 100%. Lost Keys (blame Hoffman) refers to Albert Hoffman, the inventor of LSD. Rosetta Stoned tells the story of a man who's ends up at the hospital and it's not clear if he had a UFO encounter or if he was just blasted on LSD and hallucinating. Extremely fun pair of songs!

Ïf i remember correctly it's based on a true story of a guy who claimed to have been abducted by aliens, he was told how the world would end and how to prevent it, but when he woke up in the hospital he couldn't remember what they said, so made out to be a hero, but he forgot his pen. It is written in a hilarious way though lol

Maynard made appearances in the band, as well. Was also called Green Jellö first but Kraft Foods were a-holes and whined enough so they changed it. And if I'm not mistaken, Green Jelly still tours these days if they can (he at least does collaborative shows). Watched him on a podcast tell the story of this song not long ago. Bill Manspeaker is his name. Listen to 3 Little Pigs by Green Jelly... Maynard is in that one. Comment back if you can figure out which part is his.
