  • After a recent visit to Witley Court, I also visited the adjacent Great Witley Church for a photographic tour.

My goodness, what a gem. I'm not sure I have ever seen so much gilding. Well done to the local parishioners for bringing this back to life & to you for sharing with us.

      Thank you Faith.
It is certainly a very impressive church! My jaw dropped open when I walked through the porch.
      Glad you enjoyed it.

      Thank you Malcolm.
Certainly, the most beautifully decorated church that I have ever seen. More cathedral like, than small village like.
      Glad you enjoyed it.
      Take care,
      Paul

      Thank you David!
Although I had heard of Witley Court before my visit, I did not know about the wonders of this church.
It isn't often open, so I was lucky for it to be open when we visited the Court next door.
My mouth fell open when I stepped inside!
I am surprised it is not more well known, to be honest.
      Cheers!
      Paul

Yes, a very rare and beautiful church. I was so glad that it was open when I visited Witley Court next door.

Thank you Donna, and always lovely to hear from you.
My jaw dropped when I walked through the church's porch and saw this! It is just so beautiful - I would say the most beautiful of all the ones that I have seen.
      Take care,
      Paul

Excellent ! The stained glass also came from Canons, as did the organ and its case. The Duke of Chandos of Canons died in 1744 and the entire estate contents were sold off in 1747, so the Foleys got almost a complete chapel for a song. Happily the Foleys sold Witley in 1937 to the Earl of Dudley, which probably prevented the church interior being sold to American museums like the best rooms of their Stoke Edith estate in Herefordshire.

      Thank you Philip.
I had not heard of the wonders of this church prior to my visit to Witley Court, although I was aware of the Court itself.
I was so glad that it was open to visit - I thought that this format was the best way to present it, as there were a fair few visitors inside the church, and it was far from quiet inside!
Thank you so much for the additional background information. Shame Cannons was demolished - I could not find out a reason why, apart from the death of said Duke.
But, it was lucky for the Foley family - and now to locals and visitors too!
      Cheers,
      Paul

Thank you. Amazing church! Much appreciate the beautiful old ornate churches! Grew up as close as you can get near Gothic cathedral in the Netherlands: the St. Jan in 's-Hertogenbosch.

I was blown away by the beauty of this church, and was very fortunate to find it open when I was visiting the nearby Great Witley Court.
I will continue to feature churches on my channel from time to time.
      Take care,

Thank you Louise! My jaw dropped when I walked inside the church! I couldn't believe that a village church in rural Worcestershire would look like that inside! Very cathedral like, but also a bit like you'd see in Italy. It was amazing! 💒 thanks for a lovely comment ☺️

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland.
What a beautiful video. A lovely church. Fabullous camera work bringing out the best of the stunning decoration.
Back in hospital on Tuesday. I have a bacterial infection in my bladder that because of my kidney diseased, can only be treated in hospital with very specifc antibiotics. I won't be around until early next week.

and that the anti-biotics do their work quickly.
Thanks so much for a lovely comment about my video.
Take care, and catch up soon.
      All the best,

I had forgotten that you said you would show us the splendid church at Witley Court- it is very Baroque & Italianate!
So untypically English! I am so glad they restored it to its former glory!! Thanks for filming it- shame it isn’t open ( save once) for Christmas- it would look magnificent with all the extra Christmas lights.

Yes, sorry for the delay Diana - it was stuck in my 'to do' list! I have a few of those! There are never enough hours in the day.
It is well worth visiting though - the countryside around the Teme Valley and the Shelsleys is beautiful, and often not explored. I hope to make more in this area next year.
Hope you get a chance to see it at some point.
      Take care,
      Paul

Dear Paul. Perhaps I am biased as it is relatively near the Leominster Canal (!) but I personally found this to be one of your best yet (despite my great love of canals and railways). I found viewing an emotive and totally relaxing experience helped by the glorious choice of appropriate music and superb colourful photography..For my many sins, over 35 years I have always intended a visit but sadly failed. I now know, however, thanks to yourself, that I really must. Many thanks. David. Trustee FoLC

      Thank you Neil.
Yes, bit of a story to how I was here. My auntie lives in Ross-on-Wye, and she occasionally takes me on mystery trips. We ended up at Witley Court, which I had heard of, but this amazing church, I hadn't!
It really took me by surprise - not the sort of thing you expect to see in a small village in rural Worcestershire.
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I don't like to just stick to railways and canals on my channel, although, like you, I do like both a lot, but my Short Bite Series allows me more freedom to mix things up, and do lots of different things. I don't make them for lots of views, but for the sheer enjoyment of things that I personally find interesting.
The church has limited opening days & times and doesn't reopen (apart from Christmas services) until February and then more frequently from April. I think there is more info on the church's own website (link in the description of the video). However, it is well worth visiting, if you get the chance. I do hope to explore more of this very beautiful area of the Teme Valley, as well as revisit The Leominster Canal too, of course!
      Thanks again,
      Paul

@neilslater1 you're welcome! Yes, my aunt is only 4 years older than me, and we grew up together - we are both mad about photography too!
