    Always a good idea to put the moss back where you got it from. Some of it will survive and catch more gold in future floods.

      Tara! You are not wrong with that statement. Basically, if I go to somewhere new, I’ll check the moss first, if it has gold, then I’ll try the creek bed knowing that it’s in abundance there. So yea, he’s moss as an indicator of gold, nothing else! Super appreciate the comment and support :)

    • @christineedwards4865
      @christineedwards4865 3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, that's how you'd get the best recovery. The old timers used steel pans, and sometimes they would put the pan loaded with moss in a fire and then pan out the ashes.

    • @StoneyCreekSparkchaser
      @StoneyCreekSparkchaser  3 месяца назад +1

      @christineedwards4865 that’s crazy that they did that but it makes complete sense. That whole area is absolutely loaded with moss, but to me, it too pretty and fits the landscape to take down. I’ll keep the gold there so it can grow bigger 🤣

    • @christineedwards4865
      @christineedwards4865 3 месяца назад +1

      @@StoneyCreekSparkchaser I agree, that area is beautiful and the moss is part of what makes it look so nice. It can take a few years to grow back, and any time a bad flood comes through it tears it up. There are areas kind of like that in the Blue Ridge Mtns, but with slightly less rain. If you feel bad when flipping a boulder with a beautiful carpet of moss on it, it transplants very easily. With all the rain you get, you could literally just roll up the whole "carpet" and relocate it on the bank (as long as it's still in deep shade) where flood waters hopefully won't disturb it. Or you could rip it into small pieces and scatter them in a spot where you'd like to "seed" some moss. There are a huge variety of mosses out there, but the ones that grow on wet rocks can usually also grow on damp dirt. I've experimented with transplanting a few different species, and the most difficult for me so far has been star moss (doesn't usually grow in a creek).

    • @StoneyCreekSparkchaser
      @StoneyCreekSparkchaser  3 месяца назад +1

      @christineedwards4865 we’ve actually done just that, but a little different. We have a beautiful stone wall that surrounds portions of our house and it’s covered in moss. Well a few years ago, we did some construction and we had to move a bunch of it, so to bring it back, we got a blender and put the moss and I think it was a yogurt of some kind. Anyhow, we mixed it all up and then painted it on all the rocks. A few months later, our moss came back and looks like it never left. Pretty neat that you can do that.
