  • Gilbert syndrome is a common, harmless liver condition in which the liver doesn't properly process bilirubin. Bilirubin is produced by the breakdown of red blood cells.
The most frequent sign of Gilbert syndrome is an occasional yellowish tinge of the skin and the whites of the eyes as a result of slightly higher levels of bilirubin in the blood. In people with Gilbert syndrome, bilirubin levels may increase due to:
    • Illness, such as a cold or the flu
    • Fasting or eating a very low-calorie diet
    • Dehydration
    • Menstruation
    • Strenuous exercise
    • Stress

Sorry to hear you’re stressed. I guess that kind of comes with the territory though.

Hello from one Betsy to another.. you are the first person I have ever encountered with Gilbert's syndrome. About 30 years ago I had a routine blood test iland my bilirubin was a bit High but the doctor did not mention anything so I didn't worry about it. WelI have to tell you I went a few years without a regular blood tes but he next time I had one maybe three or four years later the billirubin n number again was high. But again the doctor did not seem concerned. So lhis went on for several years and finally one day I did bother to ask. Almost immediately the doctor said you likely have Gilbert's syndrome. . He said I was free to look it up but that it was nothing to worry about. . Most of the time it is just a couple ticks above normal range.. I have noticed over the last few years that it is less likely to be high then it was show me in my life.... Interesting comments about stress.. perhaps the fact that I've been retired for the last 5 years as something to do the the normal count! Thanks for your posts.. I enjoy getting a peek into your life

I always think because I have this syndrome as well that it's actually beneficial and helps in other ways. Like it fights off something because you don't have something that is normally attacked. 7 years ago and it's all stress-induced I got rid of my wife and never had an issue since. I'm thinking it has something to do with cortisol levels. I'm going off of my own experiences of my own body .
