  • Chickens prepped this garden bed, then we built the Garden, and now it’s time to plant. See how Chickens and mulch did most of my gardening while the plants were growing in the greenhouse (now, ready to go). ALSO in the vlog: Moving piglets to pasture and setting chicken up to do the job.

I'm really curious on two things: why do you have chicken on different places and do you switch' em? And could you explain more about your milk system? I understand now that once you got your milk you put them in an ice bath before storing them in the fridge and then what? What are the steps you take for it to get to your table?

The Breakfast posse is making compost on a large scale. Lily's posse is beside our kitchen garden so they compliment each other. The garden gets the compost the chicken make there and the chickens get the garden "waste." They feed each other. In the field the chickens follow the cows spreading the manure (fertilizer) and eating fly larvae (breaking the pest cycle).

Greg Judy builds tree swallow bird houses to deal with flies, see easy build instructions and placement on his RUclips channel. He says that one tree swallow bird pair eats 8000 blood sucking flies per day off of his livestock herd! Increase biodiversity on your farm with tree swallows and let them eat those pesky flies.

On my parents' farm, they always had barn swallows and they put up a big purple martin house too. Plus there were countless other birds and even bats. All helped keep the insect pest population under control. I remember one year we even released a few thousand ladybugs to deal with aphids... fun for the kids too. Mom & Dad were experimenters, always trying out different ideas. I'm like that too. 😁

Hey Justin, I use the Gallagher Smartfence system with my sheep and goats. The key is to train them to it. Put your critters inside their normal netting, and then string about 10 feet of the Gallagher inside so they can walk around it but get a nice zap if they touch it. Then they'll know to avoid touching it.

Maybe those "pasture pigs" are a good intermediate step between "pigs tearing down a thick forest" and "cows grazing on grass". They'll trim down the grass which has come up, and till up more seed in the bare areas.

How about building a huge rotary bobbin station with wheels for your electric fencing? You roll up and move the net and roll out. You also need a Lazy Susan to turn it easier.
Alternatively you can search for industrial bobbins for cable companies. They might have huge bobbins.
