How to RIDE a SCOOTER/MOPED!

  • For me at least I found riding a scooter easy, but I discovered from letting my friends ride my scooter, that not everyone picks it up as easily as I did. Therefore, I thought some people might find it useful if I made a video showing you how to ride a scooter, based on the knowledge I have learnt from my own experiences, and from teaching my friends.

    Hey Kiwi!
    I remember watching your video back in March when i was eating up all the information on scooters i could find as was nervously preparing to buy one. Just saw it now again and it reminded me how much time has passed and how much my life has changed since.
    Anyways, i've gotten a beautiful old 2005 Kymco Filly and i couldnt be happier for it! it's used and rel cheap but it's my crown achievement of prosperity at the moment, and I am enjoying the scooter lifestyle and going to work on it (no PTSD for cycling-13,5-km-one-way-to-work-into-headwind again) and it's just so good!
    It's funny, i saw your video in March and it seems like half a year, when it was perhaps 2 months. Greetings from Netherlands!

      Looks beautiful.
      Don't need anymore power than that really.
      You can but I,personally, don't see the point living in England.
      Get up to 70 on the Motorway ( possibly 80 ) and the same on the dual carriageway!

    don't forget also that riding where you recommend the car driver can see you in the rear view mirror and the side mirror. if you can see his eyes then he can see you . . I ride a uz50. also riding by the curb gives you less time to react if a car comes out of a drive. also pulling out to pass stationary cars puts you in a blind spot. lots of things to be aware of. carefull on painted road markings in the wet!. :)

      I think just riding around lots will help you get used to the way scooters ride and what other road users do around you. I picked it up reasonably quickly and learnt to ride just on experience. Definitely avoid manhole covers, paint and stagnant water when it's raining if you want to stay upright. I learnt that the hard way...

      Literally just pushing on the handlebars on the side I want to move

    • @TheChromeRonin
      @TheChromeRonin 3 года назад

      Hard to see, because its more about a little bit of pressure than a big movement, but when you practice it, you'll feel it. What's actually happening is that the front wheel Is turning one direction for a split second, but your brain is thinking of turning in the opposite direction (counter steering) and the bike "drops" over into the turn much faster than if you just lean into it. It needs a little speed on for it to work, I find about 30kph+, and I practice by going through a tight S bend (tight right with an immediate tight left). Practice with cones or similar.

    I’m turning 16 at the end of may and wondered how much a moped would be with the insurance and the price of the moped?? not looking to spend over 700 for the moped could I get a decent one for under that?

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  4 года назад +1

      My $2500 50cc scooter was like $350 a year for insurance from memory. So for a $700 scooter I'd say it'll be anywhere from $200 - $400 depending on who you go for. I'm with AMI. Also, $700 is probably the lest you'd want to spend. Spending a little extra to get something that's going to be reliable is probably a smarter way to go. My mate bought one for $800 and it was OK but he had a few problems. That said, any Japanese (Honda, Suzuki, yamaha) should be pretty reliable regardless of cost (within reason of course)

    Hi, mate! I have the same scooter, but in Russia, and my manual is only in Japaneese. (( Can you, please, help me and make scans or even shots on mobile phone of your manual? Please answer, i will give you e-mail, if you agree. I've e also looked at your videos. My scooter goes about 53 km/h, and doesn't have restrictor. The good thing it's stable, even riding up the hill. It's not new scooter, so i wanna check for new belt.

    Do you use both breaks at once

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  5 лет назад +6

      Yep - but remember front brake does 70% of your stopping. Rear brake is just there to balance it out. Too much front brake will send you over the handlebars, and too much rear brake will make you skid. That's why it's good to use both of them at once.

    I would like to introduce you to Japanese scooters. The main displacement of a Japanese scooter is 49 cc. You can drive 49 cc if you have a car license.
    The current mainstream is 4-stroke air-cooled engine. I don't know it in foreign countries, but in Japan you can get a 49 cc license from 16 years old. In foreign countries, it is in miles but in Japan it is in km. If you come to Japan, we recommend you to rent a bicycle to Asakusa Ueno Akihabara. In Ueno, there is the famous Sensoji Temple, which is visited by many tourists. From there, you can reach Ueno in about 15 minutes by bicycle. In Ueno, you can shop cheaply on Ameyoko Street. It takes about 10 minutes to reach Akihabara. In Akihabara, electric appliances such as home appliances and personal computers are sold cheaply. And you should contact me, because I can politely guide you to Japan free of charge. It will be my English study

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  4 года назад

      Yeah Japanese rules sound pretty similar to us. Only difference I can see is that most people only rent bikes here to ride at mountain bike parks or do ride one of our hiking trails. Most tourists just get a rental car or walk because our cities are so small

  • @dylanpoingdestre6473

    Good video, but I think its aimed at the biggest idiots out there that need the most help. Personally I wouldn't need to test where the clutch engages, just twist and go. Perhaps someone with little coordination.

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  5 лет назад +2

      Fair - I myself did not need to practice learning when the clutch engages either. I took a test ride on a scooter, having never rode one before, and was able to hoon around no problems within minutes. However I let some of my friends ride my scooter and one binned it on some grass, and the other smashed through a hedge. Now I realise not everyone picks up riding scooters as quickly as others, hence why the video is a little over-pedantic haha
