Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Oh my goodness! I am in love with this business! I have a huge wishlist already, and I’ve just peeked at it! Thank you Jess, once again for inspiring me. At 66 and disabled I get so frustrated trying to move and breathe at the same time let alone garden. Every time I watch one of your videos, I’m motivated to keep moving, breathing and gardening.

I’m in a similar situation and I am also determined to rise up and GROW this year!! I have 4 greenstalks that I’ve collected this last year from sales and 2 put together already. That took me days…but I DID it!!! I also have an area near my porch that I’ve been laying my flattened cardboard boxes for a while and I’m going to stake around it and put up wire and some old building materials. Then put old wood and sticks from yard and leaves. Then finish it off with soil! I know that’s going to take so much effort but I AM going to get it done and grow in it this year!!!! Times are definitely telling us to do this!!

Brad's Atomic Grape is one of my favorite tomatoes! I actually saw some of them on this channel a number of years back, and was very excited to get my hands on them. They are really beautiful "prune plum" size tomatoes with all the wonderful colors, and more importantly .... fantastic flavor, as well as Tomato Blue Berries, and the Pink Berkely Tie Dye from Wild Boar Farms. The Tomato Blue Berries have a beautiful shiny vivid coloring, and is one of the most blemish-free skin, of which I never had a single one that I can remember, crack from the rain.
Most of the tomatoes that I grow, you will not see in a grocery store either. So many people are stuck on this "tomatoes are red 🍅" mentality, that they've convinced themselves that they won't like anything else. There is a whole other world of "not red" tomatoes out there, and they are unfortunately missing out on them. As a matter of fact, I grow very few red tomatoes these days. I like to grow the big yellow varieties such as Pineapple & Kellogg's Breakfast. I love Chocolate cherry, True Black Brandywine, Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, White Tomesol, Black Cherry, Purple Russian, Berkeley Tie Dye Green, and Giant Green.
Don't get me wrong, I love❤ red 🍅🍅tomatoes, and still grow a few. My reasoning is that I can get red tomatoes from a ton of local farmers, but none of the others I've mentioned. All the best to you, Miah & family as you move forward with developing your new property. I miss your old homestead, but your new one is growing on me .... plus I still get to see Bear 🐕‍🦺😂Take care Jess ✌🏻

My car battery died at the grocery store!! I was soooo glad I had somewhere warm to wait. It was such an awful cold. I pray for everyone who doesn’t have secure shelter/home base. It was unliveably cold out there! 🥶 I don’t have any farm animals of my own yet, but it definitely would have been a case for bringing them into some sort of shelter. I have a goal within another year or so of starting that journey, so made me realize just how much there is to do when weather changes up north here and you also have a homestead. Jess, aged compost squeezed in a bucket of rested or filtered water without chlorine can help a lot if not dissapear in around 2 weeks the poison in straw and you can trial this first with few spare plants or maybe supermarket tomato seeds (heh)

Have you thought about growing penuts? They’re surprisingly super easy to grow I had a penut plant just for fun from some store bought shell penuts! They take off! And they’re fun to pull out of the ground. And the leaves fold together at night and they look like they’re praying. Penuts are underrated as a garden plant. They’re wonderful to watch grow! And they also have these pretty flowers.

Just LUV a sun warmed tomato!! Last year I tried the Brads Atomic grapes. Had many of them growing in containers. In the late fall, I saved them from freezing, by bringing in the house. Picked the last one on Christmas day. Such a tasty treat. There's so many kinds to choose from at Wild Boar Farm. I'm sure I'll find a few new kinds to plant soon, very very soon.

I am trying so hard to get raised beds built so I can garden from a chair as I am disabled and mobility is very hard for me. It's a slow process since I'm on a very limited budget but am so excited to get back in to gardening. I grew up on a small farm where we grew and raised most of our food and my husband and I was doing good raising our food till he got Cancer and I became disabled, we had to get rid of all our animals it broke my heart. I am now trying to not only garden but have high hopes of building a chicken coop that is easy for me to take care of so I can get half a dozen hens again. Love your videos and search for new ones daily. Wish I had found you years ago when you still lived in Arkansas, I'm in North Arkansas myself.

Hey lady. I wanted to send you a picture of my cups I recycled for nice sturdy pots. I live in Myrtle beach ( where they shot the China balloon down, we could see it happen and feel the earth shake.) so any way, all the restaurants give souvenir cups for your drinks. Too many for the cabinet. I was about to buy solo cups then a light bulb went off. So hubby drilled holes and no need for solo cups. I got a little overzealous ordering tomato and pepper seeds. Good thing we added more rows in the fall. Pray there was no virus in that balloon that the misle blew to smitherines. The navy was out there to collect the debris. I wonder if any will wash up on the beach. They might have it blocked off. Thanks for all you do. Debbie from Myrtle beach

Have not carried and look at me as if I'm the nut when i ask. I've viewed the color's that will be arriving soon to us and their amazingly exciting and tasty!
Hopefully, my garden will soon reflect these amazing plants!

You know what's funny? I've gardened in Berkeley for 40 years and the Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye doesn't do very well here. We look out on the Bay and the Golden Gate, and that ocean influence means it just doesn't get hot in the summer. Slicers really like the heat. We do better with San Francisco Fog tomatoes. 😂But that Tie-Dye sure is a pretty tomato!
