I converted my 2 car garage into an ADU. 485 sq ft. I decided to do a studio instead due to the small space. I block one area using closet Wardrobe Armoires to create a space for a bed.
I converted a 480 sqt ft garage into a studio and it was decent the size; I made the front living / kitchen area and the back bathroom with bedroom and it looks spacious. Great job! I love the design!
If I was going to make a similar design I would: 1. Make the two pylons on the front porch smaller so I could actually have space for a bench or something. 2. I would make the interior a studio. It is so small that I would do away with the walls to create an open floor plan.
The porch is more for the exterior look to match my existing house. My biggest concern was for the place not to look like a box. The interior bedroom and bath are standard size, The living space is on the small side but it works nice for 1-2 people. Thanks for your input.
Looks good, quality attention to detail. My only qualm is the front aesthetic. The exterior wall on the left is void/dead space. It needs a faux window or something. Otherwise, I saved this video for my jr ADU build in Sacramento. I’m converting my 20x20 garage. Thanks for sharing!
That’s one of the nicest ADUs I’ve seen too, and $350/sq ft is definitely reasonable! Stephens Brothers Construction did a fantastic job with this build. If you’re thinking about building something like this in Santa Barbara, there are trusted builders in the area who specialize in ADUs. Just make sure they use ADU-specific agreements to protect both you and the project!
I ran water off my main with its own shutoff and electrical is sub panel off main. Hard to say cost as I do most of the work myself and this is my residence.
@stephensbrothersconstructi7294 thank you, I am looking to do something similar building on top of my garage which is connected to my house. Any advice you can give for running water, electrical, plumbing? I found your video to be very helpful
Too bad! Stephens Brothers are great. If you’re looking for a builder, just make sure they use ADU-specific agreements to keep your project protected and compliant with local regulations.

The driveway is in front of this unit. The side of it I sometimes park at but we have a driveway that has 7 spots we are on a big lot.

$350/sq ft is very reasonable. Would you be able to build something like this in Santa Barbara???
