- CBS 2’s Jermont Terry caught up with a group of supervised youngsters who became swept up in the “takeover” mayhem - and who now fear when, and if, they come back downtown, people will look at them with side eyes because they, in their words, “fit the description.”

It’s not racial profiling, it’s call recognizing a pattern.
I agree, there is a pattern that exists. The issue people run into is that they think the pattern is limited to race. They see this problem as something intrinsic to the group and not a notable subset of members within the group.
That's why racial profiling is bad. It's like labelling all white people as racists because of western society's relationship with race. There is an inarguable amount of disfunction within the black community, but you have to pay attention to all of the characteristics and not just a person's race in order to determine whether a black person exhibits that dysfunction or not.
But I am definitely not completely against discrimination. Even as a black person, I discriminate against people, even other black people. If I'm at the mall, and a see a large group of black teenagers that carry themselves in a specific way, that's my cue to leave.

My message to these teens is this: keep your heads down, and your hands clean and focus on your schooling. As soon as you graduate leave and never come back; go to college, study a trade, join the military or find something that's a career and settle in a place where you can live a life of peace and success where you're not dragged down by this environment.

I was that young black kid in Alabama. I hardly went anywhere and wasted little time joining the Navy when I was 19.

I am a black parent in a two parent home. The two teenagers are right about the fact that not all black kids act like what we usually see on TV. I disagree with their statement that a celebrity has to come to their city and talk to the youth about what is wrong. That is the responsibility of their parents. Children have to be raised by both parents. It makes a big difference.
I didn’t get that part about the celebrity either. Why do they need a celebrity to tell them how to behave is that their only role models? If anything rap culture is part of the reason why these teens behave that way. I know they aren’t listening to Beethoven 😂

@@136760mas1 The problem with profiling is that it's no more or less illegal to commit a crime while being any given race. Therefore the methods used to investigate and prove guilt must be colorblind. So we arrive at the conclusion that if your law enforcement practices are sound, you shouldn't need to profile people to begin with. You should be able to watch for probable cause and then detain. It's not really harder than that, if you want to play by the rules.

The two 14 year olds are a great representation of their community and I hope for the absolute best for them. I think it takes a lot of guts to go on camera and express what they want for their community when they know others will push back.

I think it's worth pointing out that most of the kids there were not causing destruction, sure a lot of them were - but as demonstrated by this segment plenty were just there trying to have a good time as well. Also I think you may be forgetting how impressionable teenagers and children are. Having a celebrity tell them it's wrong obviously isn't the solution - but the idea of someone that is very respected among these teen's demographic talking to them about it wouldn't hurt. Just my two cents, I know it won't fix everything.

The profile is already set, by misfortune. Lots of people, as soon as they see a crowd of kids or people from certain areas of the city, they walk away to avoid problems or fearing an assault.

2. Tell your friends they're negatively impacting the rest of you.

4. You reap what you sow.
5. No one has to accept what you sling.
You can't blame ordinary people for being wary of young black males and females especially in large groups because there's a clear pattern of impulsive violence against anyone unfortunate enough to get caught in their sights, as well as the senseless property damage and looting that has been repeated many times over many decades, so people are rightfully suspicious of black youths. You can't blame people for being street smart and watching their backs. One of the main indicators of intelligence in humans is being able to recognize patterns, so this is normal going back to pre-history times. I think the best thing that these kids can do is set a good example themselves and not wait for some celebrity or athlete to come and rescue them. Live righteous lives and put your money where your mouths are. The black popular culture that's constantly promoted as noble and righteous actually promotes and glorifies criminal/deviant behavior, so this is the result, and everyone is worse off for it.
See a group of loud black young people, lock the doors, avoid eye contact, just leave asap.

The above mentioned parties are getting their well-deserved exposure via news clips such as this one. I’ve seen multiple myself with various victims giving their perspective.
The driving force behind this chaos is social media. I think we all should be rethinking social media. Yes, it is a great source of information and relating to other people... however, it's causing people to go too far. It’s not just the people that get profiled based on who did it but also the location. Many people will actively avoid that city after an event like that happens.
A fear of being profiled will never trump the fear of being beaten up or shot at or having your car destroyed by a gang of thugs.

Referring to this situation as a "takeover" is a fatal flaw. Reporting needs to use the words that directly reference where the line is being crossed from legal congregating into illegal activity, such as "looting" or "trespassing" or "assaulting", etc. Otherwise, any congregation of people can be labeled a "takeover"

I don't understand how that many parents don't know where their children are or how many just do not care because that is a lot of unsupervised youth. I know where my 15, 17 and even 21yr old children are.

I live in Central California. We profile all the time. Someone walks into a liquor store and points a gun at the clerk we automatically assume that it's a Robery. What can I say. Yep, we jump to conclusions a lot. We have a lot of Armenians in our Community. We automatically assume that they are good hard working business people. We assume that if it's Wednesday that Armenian Farmer has already worked 40 hours. Sometimes we're wrong. A friend of mine laughed. He said that he had 40 hours in by Tuesday night. The Armenians have established a reputation as hard working business people over the last 100 years. I'm not sure that there will be any long term gains from destroying Stores and breaking Windshields. I could be wrong but I'd think that wasn't the best way to build a reputation as a hard working taxpayer. But what would I know. I'm just a law abiding Taxpayer.
