- Be sure to check on your fanfic writing friends every once in a while. They might be having an angsty crisis.
To be clear for some people who cannot tell: this is not meant to make fun of fanfiction authors. I write fanfic too, I go through some of these emotions too, and this is just a lighthearted look at how many of us suffer a bit for the sake of art :)

I wonder if they lost their sanity by the time they finished the fic.

A lot of us AO3 ‘authors’ are actually pretty fine but stressful or life changing events are just great motivation for writing fiction, so often the tags and authors notes can turn out wild.
Absolutely true! Writing is a great way to express, reason with, or even escape from our emotions. And I adore the ao3 community and how open they all are about expressing themselves through their writing and their tags! And of course their overall creativity :) So I'm really glad this video brought so many fanfic authors together to have fun talking about the writing process and the fun tags we create along the way.

I've read instances of this maybe 2-3 times....quite shocking and disconcerting.

Wattpad is a gold mine for funny jokes in serious occasions and ao3 is needing therapy but pretends everything's ok

Actually, Wattpad is usually considered the joke, due to how many edgy stories you can find for a single fandom. Some common fandoms these edgy stories come from are:
Highschool DxD (Usually Cheated, Betrayed, or just stories where the MC is an OP badass and causes Issei to uncharacteristically seeth and turn evil)
RWBY (You literally can go one search session without stumbling upon atleast several hundred Cheated, Betrayed, Abused and neglected stories, usually involving the Rose family for some reasons)
My hero acadamia (People seem to love making Deku abused by his family for some fucking reason, sometimes even having him be accused of a crime and betrayed)
And these are just three fandoms that has these things popping up constantly. So yeah, Wattpad is usually a joke of a fanfic site since the chances of you coming across a good story with good Grammer, pacing, character/world development, ETC, is about as easy as finding a needle in a hay mountain.

Yes, my account is just a collection of fragments of chapters because I like it better than Word and I unpublished the only story I ever made public because I saw that it had 50 views and I panicked...

@@kingsley5818 Literally the only reason I gavent fully switched over to AO3 is because I love seeing people comment and respond to the specific line they want to. It's what drew me to Wattpad in the first place, being allowed to name ever single ... that would act as a time-skip. Lol

Writing fics is fun, but it's just sad how it forces many authors to feel guilty and useless when they haven't uploaded for awhile.

Second on the WIP thing. I have at least five folders in my Google Drive each with an average of seven different docs per folder with individual ideas that are all fleshed out yet never to be finished.

I wrote on Wattpad because I didn't find ao3 until later.... I've abandoned my fics because I dont have the f^cking energy to make them. I'm so f^cked up, insomnia, depression, and major anxiety..... I need therapy, but I don't have the f^cking energy to care enough. I will die before I will ever finish the abominations I called fics.

coffee666! The wonderful author, so sweet and nice. Read the Good Witch (The Owl House) fanfic and it was incredibly phenomenal. Sort of talked to them back when I drew fanart for the fanfic.
Also, thank you for this, I wouldn't be opposed if it were a series. AO3 tags are just jokes that literally wrote themselves.

the single funniest thing that has ever happened to me is that i read something that i _thought_ was gonna be a sickfic except then it got really weird and intimidating and i scrolled back up and hidden between "soup" and "kissing" was "psychological horror" and, well. that's what it was.
it was a genuinely good fic, i just never read the tags properly.
1:18 i lacked the mental fortitude to retain any of the info about the actual fic that followed, so that tag was beyond successful considering i didnt even enter direct contact with the thing

The skipping studying to write it is such a huge mood. Instead of studying for 3 different midterms I had I decided it was time to crank out 3 decent one shots in the span of 4-5 days
PLS instead of studying for my finals i was cranking out another chapter i hate myself

AO3 author here. Writing is a good way to process terrible situations. I'm pretty proud of two stories I wrote after I escaped an abusive situation and survived a hurricane.

Second, I can only imagine your author's note: Sorry guys! I couldn't update the chapter on time because i broke up with my abusive ex and had to deal with a hurricane and lost my house in the process which led me to become homeless. But it's okay! The cybercafe became my home. :D /j

a sans anti-harem fanfic(which if you know what those hold you'll understand when i say-) i read had the author accidentally publishing the reason why she wrote it
and it was because she was ina currently abusive household and suddenly all the painful accuracies to manipulation, gaslighitng, and abuse was made clear, fanfic authors deserve better the persistance of the main character to not have pets and again PAINFULLY ACCURATE depictions of different types of trauma and ways that other skeletons in the house deal with it or how htey react to it or how the MC herself feels when subjected to it;;;;
Heart breaking really i hope she'll be safe soon and i'm glad she found comfort in writing about the bone boys and i'mm throw hands with anyone who calls sans fanfics cringe like- this poor woman's only escape from her horrible life is that.

The tags are a lot more interesting to read than the stories because of how ridiculous they can be.
I'm an AO3 author, I have about 40 works; most of them are oneshots, one work as two separate endings and another work has 31 oneshots/chapters in it. It's safe to say that I'm not okay- literally everything I write is Loki being comforted...after he's been hurt or tortured-

As an AO3 fanfic author, I can say that these results are, without a doubt, true and not exaggerated.
I straight up found a fanfic that had "self-recognition through the other (derogatory)" and another that had " Slowburn/extremely slow burn. I have to power to reveal things far more painful as this goes"

0:44 I used to be a wattpad author and this was true to me even in the peak of happiness in my life. I guess it's just fun to read comments about how sad I made people. Yeah, I'm that sadistic. Sometimes, I'd even write some smut at the start of the sotry, fialogue, then BAM add some angst right at the end.

This one fic I read had tags that went like "straight sex in one chapter" and then the next tag was "yes yes sex between a man and a woman" and then there was "how boring"

In the Boku no Hero Academia fandom, the "no beta we die like sir nighteye" is really popular. I lose it everytime because he is not a well-liked character and died a few episodes after his first appearance. And when he tried to tell All Might that he will die a gruesome death, I can't help but remember the uno reverse card meme.

Yep, as an AO3 reader, i can confirm i see a lot of weird stuff looking for something interesting to read. And by interesting i mean "anything that has no NSFW, no romance, no gay ships of canonically straight characters, has my favorite character on it in which he actually sounds like himself and looks like himself, yk, not being a human, friend of the protagonists, with blonde hair, addiction to yellow, and sometimes obssession for some character instead". Though I have seen weird stuff, like someone claiming a perfectly straight character is 100% gay, i have never seen anything as wacky as the things shown in this video
