100% agree with him, there's a difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. I do however think some comedians fail to look at the impact of their jokes on actual people, because its not always about people being "offended", oftentimes humour that skirts the line of decency does so by relying on negative stereotypes, and sometimes even harmful untruths. When a comedian makes a joke thay also spreads those untruths to theor audience, they have a potential of fueling hatred and spreading messages used to harm people. That's generally why the subjects of those jokes get upset, not becauae theyre offended but because they're seeing the spread of falsehoods that make them actually unsafe.

I'm sure that the fact that Ben Elton doesn't court the spotlight shows a healthy dislike of celebrity culture etc, but we need to hear more from Elton.
The minute I picked up Truss's book I started laughing. One day I intend to read it
Can someone please explain why a comedian makes more sense than the people elected to govern the nation?
Because nobody votes for a comedian.
@@davidh7088 Boris had a HUGE majority.
Wow!, what a story. Living in Australia, but sadly it sounds familiar here. The political people in power make their own rules. But tell us all how we are so bad.
Ben Elton is just a national institution....he is a class act....
More Ben Elton please
Excellent everything he said.
The fact that these people just won't go away is frightening.
Resurgence she needs to be in prison for ripping the British taxpayers off
Amazingly well said.
Ben Elton one of the least funny persons to become an entertainer, the only person who thought Ben was funny was himself. Complete narcissist.
I am fed up wirh Farage, Reece Mogg, Truss etc telling us they are battling the establishment. Ben is correct, rather than laughing at the nonsense they spout all that matters now is backing someone on the same side of the political divide as yourself. And still working class people think that these millionaires speak for them
I wouldn't call myself Ben Elton's no. 1 fan, but here he is brilliant.
Its called 'hypernormalisation' . Adam Curtis coined it quite some time ago now in a doc he made.
Can you trust what politicians say?
Ben Elton hasn't got any answers - this is "I hope a generation of politicians will come up that don't do this stuff" - really? How is that going to work when the last decades have proved how "this stuff" actually works, at least so far as winning power. Still, I'd rather listen to him promote his tour than Liz Truss promote her book.
Please dont say theyre defrosting this woman...i hoped shed gone back into cryogenic status.
The utter nonsense completely nailed . Thank you , Ben .
No one gives a shart about Lizz Truss but platforms like this KEEP TALKING ABOUT HER. Stop talking about her and no one will care FFS. But of course, because she is such a complete mess, articles and videos do get clicks. Until we stop watching and reading, she's not going anywhere.
Truss even LOOKS gormless in real life!
Truss can spout nonsense and lies all year long. But people will still know the reality every time they pay their mortgage/rent and utilities each month.
@damian What's that got to do with Truss?
@@chatham43If you genuinely don't know then there's no helping you.
If you want to hear a joke, ask a politician.
If you want to hear the truth, ask a jester.
Who votes the jokes into power ?
The problem with political jokes is that sometimes they get elected.
Is LIZZIE TRUSS STILL DISCUSSING ECONOMETRICS WITH HER HUSBAND EVERY NIGHT. SHOULD WE BLAME HIM FOR HER MANGLED THOUGHT.😊😊😊
Absolutely spot on
100% agree with him, there's a difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe.
@sylesh Thin edge of the wedge.
Being female myself, I hate to criticise women but really trust not Liz Truss, Cruella Braverman, Penny MORDOR, Petty Patel, disgraceful, compared to the marvellous Labour SHADOW? Cabinet. Angela Rayner, Yvette Cooper, and the rest. But that is not to say, the smirking TORY male cabinet are any better. Yuk????
The right wing meeting in Belgium was partially cancelled, dumb thing to do but let's not forget a pro Palestinian meeting in Germany was cancelled, so why no mention of that in this discussion?
Your point is interesting, but these interviews are time-constrained. Is there anything in Elton's interview you would cut out to insert the mention of the cancellation of the proPalestinian meeting, without it losing its thread?
Ben Elton - a lifetime of brilliance.
Well done Ben .
Liz Truss is like from a relationship we didn't choose but was imposed on us, and is now stalking the public.
We need more thoughtful hilarious Ben Elton satire on TV get these messages on TV into ppls living rooms
@jason He's past his sell by date..and there's no Maggie!😊
Ben Elton was the best stand up i've seen. That was 86, yet still knows what he's talking about.
It was amusing. My sympathy in saying so to those suffering higher interest rates.
Ben should be a presenter on LBC. He wud fit in perfectly.
Spot on
