There's a radio interview where she talks about the meaning of this song. Apparently it stemmed from a comment her boyfriend at the time made about how they were together because they were both broken and sad. She talked about how that made her mad because she doesn't see herself as those things... This is an amazing album that you should react to. Also, Wildflower Wildfire off Blue Banisters is one that I think you should listen to as well.
I heard that first line was cause were was some guy who interviewed her at this apartment complex and then when the interview came out he made her look like that cause he took it out of context. But the boyfriend makes more sense
the "candle in the wind" is a strong motif in chemtrails album, like lana is freeing herself from this fragile image that people put her into and it's so good, it would be really nice if you'd react to Yosemite one day, it's one of her most beautifully written songs
Honestly, knowing that you might eventually discover the whole Norman Ffffing Rockwell album makes me so happy for you, and I feel privileged that you share this with us! Thanks for the deep dive, the generosity and the love. I hope you can feel the reciprocity. ❤
I feel like people do see me as weak because I choose to be kind, but I've been through some shit, I've felt abandoned and I feel that true strength comes in never making others feel the way that I felt.
Didn’t think I could love Lana more than I already do but…your reactions give me the goosebumps I experienced listening to these songs for the first time. 💜✌️
another one of my favorite lana songs, norman fucking rockwell will always hold a special place in my heart. this album definitely helped me recover from severe depression because the way she writes felt so relatable and comforting to me in my situation. love it
i think the term "mariners" also has a nautical connotation, which could suggest the idea of navigating through stormy waters or uncertain territory in the relationship. This interpretation is supported by lyrics in the song, such as "And who I've been is with you on these beaches / Your Venice bitch, your die-hard, your weakness."
Perhaps but Lana actually talked about this song in an inter view, “she recalls how she had talked to ‘a man she was seeing’ who said that they were ‘both really similar, both really messed up’ and Lana thought that was ‘the saddest thing she’d ever heard’. And she remembers telling this guy ‘I’m actually doing pretty good’. Del Rey goes on to say that she wrote this song because she’s often had to take on the role as the ‘brighter light’.” So I thought she was talking about an actual Apartment Complex
I thought of Mariners as in the Marines, and thought that meant how America forgets its veterans & heroes that fought, got wounded, and died for America, and to not forget them. My Dad was in the Marines & this song almost made me cry.😓
“You lose your way just take my hand, your lost at sea than I’ll command your boat to me again.” You are 100 percent right, I’m sure it’s what she intended.
I think you will really appreciate Wildflower Wildfire. It shows how much she has grown and processed her pain and worked on herself since her earlier music.
You reintroduced me to Lanas music. I’m her biggest fan and I was already in love with her music, but going through the songs with you like this made me love her even more! Keep doing this pls! I wish to see you react to all of the songs from NFR. Love you! 🩵
My english sucks so I'm just gonna quote Genius about the song: "It has been speculated online that this opening line references her 2014 interview with The Guardian titled “I wish I was dead already”, which took place at the Maritime Apartment Complex. After the publication of the interview, Lana tweeted - and deleted - how she regretted trusting The Guardian". So I think she's also commenting on the way she's perceived by media and the general public. Love your commentary! greetings from Chile
NFR is one of Lana's best albums. I listened to this album and song so many times. You should listen to the entire album, for me, it's when Lana shows growth from her past albums. Cinnamon Girl and The Next Best American Record are probably my favourites from this album. I'm with everyone who recommends Wildflower Wildfire. It's such a pretty song. Also recommending 13 beaches.
It's still my favourite song. The words resonate so deep. It could also be like the soul taking to the person it inhabits - I'm here, always. I'll bring you back. I love it so much, it's my ringtone!
This song for me points in many directions. both to his ex, to the critics and even to us his fans. "You took my sadness out of context" is for critics, who have often been told that it romanticizes toxic relationships, sadness, etc. "I am a candle in the wind" makes me think that she is strong and is able to withstand all that criticism and that she will not bend in the face of the tide. "I'm your man" I feel like it's for us fans and for herself. In general, in culture, the role of man is linked to protection, strength and courage. That Lana tells us "I'm your man" I feel like she wants to tell us that she's there to protect us with her music, just as I feel that "I'm your man" she says it to herself. that she herself can be strong and protect herself from criticism, that throughout her career she has been accused of everything negative and toxic that there is.
I think you should take a look (more like listen) to her whole album Chemtrails Over The Country Club!! It's probably her "happiest" album, and a sorta sister album to NFR!. I think you'd really like it!
so happy you mentioned Leonard Cohen! It was my first thought when I heard this song and I was surprised how no one (from those I've watched so far and that was many) has made this connotation
Can you do *DARK PARADISE* 🖤 It’s one of my favourite songs from LANA. It’s from 2012. NOT uncommon topic of mourning over lost love. Everyone keeps persuading her to move on, but she can’t get over him. It’s pretty straight forward, but I love this song so much. LANA said it’s one of her favourite choruses too.. Also *OLD MONEY* .. she talks about her life in it…
hey Meredith! i've been watchin ur Lana's songs reactions since A&W and i've got to say, as a Lana fan since the release of the 2011's Video Games, rarely i've crossed ways with someone who can actually dig so deep into her ever complex art/psychology as you do! we can tell u r a true passionate and competent professional by the way u elaborate and point out such difficult themes that come thru her songwriting. i've just watched the Ultraviolence reaction and than came to this Mariners one, and f*ck, it's so nice to listen to somebody who gets shocked but at the same time has just the right amount of rational and emotional wisdom to point out meanings miles away from the surface of what standard/mainstream audiences will get. and i felt obliged to comment on this Mariners reaction 'cause especially as an old Lana fan, i've "suffered" from people judging me as a failure for liking her, as a mirror to the "failed/twisted artist" she's always shown to be. but even so, her lyrics have always spoken to me as no one else's, and this especific take on Mariners, on how kindness is power and leads the way, on how kindness does survive and stands out thru darkness, is just so dear to my heart, and the way you've absolutely nailed this analysis felt so comfy, especially with ur tips on how not to get trapped by this (with people that might want to take an ever advantage on kind people). well i've written enough already, but all that was to say: thank you thank you thank you! and congratulations on ur excellence, both on ur reactions and also as a therapist, u r truly talented, wise and passionate about it! much love all the way from Brasil 🇧🇷 ;)
2:29 Diana is an influential person to Lana- I didn’t know about Elton’s song, but I bet that’s what she’s referring to! 3:16 it’s actually BOARD, lighting, thunder- Lana explained why, but I still don’t understand her explanation of it 5:45 her ex has a line that goes ‘I’m drunk and lost at sea’…..’you are my girl’. He sings the line ‘you are my girl’ often. So I see it as her saying that’s what she wants Barrie to say to her maybe (simply bc of the other Barrie references). 11:41 I think that distance and resistance are also references to Barrie (he’s from Scotland & his song night burns) I love how you don’t know all of these little details, but you still understand and explain everything in a way that’s still applicable to those details
Keep this song in mind, cause: Lana's dad is releasing an album this June called "Lost at sea" and Lana will feature 2 of the songs. That's also relatable to her song "Grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep-sea fishing" (he's coming into the music industry, fishing for all his wishes, so please take care of him)
mariners apartment complex is one of my personal favourite lana songs! I just resonated with it so much and I love your analysis of the lyrics. So glad you're turning into a lana stan now ♡
I’m struggling with my mental health this year and recently found your channel. Absolutely love your vibe and wisdom. Needed to hear a lot of what you said in this video ❤
Yay! I'm so glad you reviewed Mariner's Apartment Complex! Your voice is so nice to listen to, your Hello in the greeting immediately made me feel calm. I said this before, and I will say it again, I love watching you vibe to Lana so much. I even notice your little feminine micro expressions. Lana makes me feel like that too haha. You give such great advice at the end here, especially about how our dark moments make us wiser. This is such a beautiful song, I hope you enjoy listening to it all day. I've been seeing cardinals so much lately too! Do you believe that they are passed loved ones coming to visit you? Cause I do. I would love to see you react to other songs from this album, NFR. Maybe Venice Bitch cause she references it in this song, or Cinnamon Girl, or Happiness is A Butterfly? How to Disappear would be a good one too. I hope you have a lovely rest of the weekend. 💜
Thank you for all these suggestions! And yes, I believe they are either loved ones past or a sign of peace. That’s what I choose to believe and it makes everything feel okay ❤
I have just recently discovered your channel and I am OBSESSED!!! It’s rly hard for me to understand the deeper meaning of lyrics and you really help open my eyes to what things mean and it means a lot to me. Keep doing what you’re doing ❤
I love this Mere! Im so glad you liked this one. I would recommend either reacting to or listening in your own time to Beautiful by Lana! It touches on the topic of needing sadness in order to appreciate happiness. What you said about people taking advantage of kindness or perceiving it as a weakness reminded me of the song Beautiful. I think many people don’t understand that being kind is one of the strongest things a person can be, because it’s an active choice that someone makes and they most likely make that choice because they know what being hurt feels like. They can either let that hurt take over their lives and negatively impact how they interact with others, or they can make the conscious decision to be kind and not let it affect themselves or those around them. My favourite t shirt I own says “Choose kindness” on it. It’s always bothered me when people say “happiness is a choice” in regards to depression because I strongly disagree, but I do think kindness is always a choice.
Thank you so much for your videos. I really love watching you react to songs it opens my eyes to things. I really appreciate you and im glad that I discovered your channel
i love your reactions! i always looked at this song as an argument between her and her lover, going back and forth (which was actually happening at the mariners apartment complex) the chourus is from the male perspective („i'll command your boat to me again”, „i'm your man”) which shows he wants to "tame" her or control her/keep her home/in that life forever. all that while one of her parts (i'm the board, the lightning, the thunder) shows that she just can't be something that she is not. she's wild and unpredictable. „you took my sadness out of context”, this man is someone who doesn't understand the ways in wich lana operates, how much she values freedom (which is a common theme in her songs, she seems to be obsessed with the idea of being on the road and out of the social norms) or how complex her feelings are. “your venice bitch, your die-hard, your weakness” (again, lana's part, she is again insinuating that she craves that wild, judgement-free relationship, possibly only sexual or no strings attached) and then, in the next line, we are coming back to the male perspective where he says: „maybe i could save you from your sins. so, kiss the sky and whisper to jesus you found this, you need this, take a deep breath, baby, let me in.” he seems to be a religious man, who is trying to manipulate her and shame her for her way of living/thinking. then, we are coming back to lana's part: (the difference between their parts can be so crystal clear if you only look a little bit deeper) „i fucked up, i know that, but, jesus, can't a girl just do the best she can?” she is cursing a lot in her parts which may represent her frustration or the age-difference between her and her lover (who seems to be controling, which is also a common theme in her songs, and doesn't let her „look too far” cause all she could "ever need" is him right there) we can see this clash of personalities throughout the whole song, so i won't be mentioning every part. „even in the dark, i feel your resistance / baby, baby, baby, i'm your man” (man's pov) & „who i am is a big-time believer, that people can change, but you don't have to leave her.” (lana's pov) she could be saying this about his wife (since being with a married men is also a common theme in her songs) she is immplying that there is a very, very small chance that she (or his wife?) will change, but he shouln't leave her, cause she (lana) could never give him what he wants (possibly a classic, "normal" family) „think about it, the darkness, the deepness, all the things that make me who i am.” she is not a family oriented person. she is dark and complex and debatably not a good person.
I think when Lana says "I'm your Man" she means to invert gender roles, finding power in her vulnerability and femininity instead of seeing it as weakness as many have criticized her.
I'm really glad you brought up the people taking advantage of you thing because i wish that i could've started my learning process of it a lot sooner lol
The episodes of your reaction to Lana's music is therapeutic as the same it is. Going beyond line to line and giving your interpretation and proceeding into giving color into its darkness is such a smart way to embrace those who have been into such traumatic experiences or us that can relate too much. Indeed, issues that needs to be addressed are bearable when being talked and shared by those who share the same adversities. Thank you! We need this🫂
This comment means so much to me. This is why I do these. I want to talk about the darkness and transformation and truly mending in the ways we can. ❤ u
Thanks for your channel . Always looking forward to seeing your latest vidéo. Your analyses are relevant and full of sinerity, émotions and yet full of humor . Bises de France
The album this song is on, Norman Fucking Rockwell, the first time I listened to it straight through in order, I felt like it was a love letter almost.
I love NFR, the album, so much. I think you might appreciate a lot of the songs from it, so I hope you'll listen to it, either by yourself or with us on stream, whatever's more comfortable. And also why I love your reaction videos is that it's not just a reaction, you analyse the lyrics, trying to interpret them in your own way, and I think this helps me understand them better as well (since I often understand social things only half way, because of autism haha).
I LOVE how you seem to have many different BEAUTIFUL backgrounds in each reaction video. I therefore challenge to keep diversying with pretty and aesthetic backgrounds 😊😅❤
It's actually my first time commenting here. I just wanted to say that I love your channel so much it's really comfortable and has a peaceful vibe. Your videos are so real and honest. You don't cut so much of the videos and that makes them so pure. Thank you for caring about the comments, paying attention to them and showing your own emotions (I know it's hard) Keep going and don't let any bad and negative comment stop you cause it seems like maybe an outlet for you, too. Btw you're so beautiful and sorry if it's too long❤
Never clicked on a video soo fast

SAME ITS SUCH A GOOD SONG THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF MY FAV SONGS IN NFR!!!!
so relatable
There's a radio interview where she talks about the meaning of this song. Apparently it stemmed from a comment her boyfriend at the time made about how they were together because they were both broken and sad. She talked about how that made her mad because she doesn't see herself as those things...
This is an amazing album that you should react to.
Also, Wildflower Wildfire off Blue Banisters is one that I think you should listen to as well.
Wildflower Wildfire yes!!!!!!
Oh wow! Thank you for this!
made her sad, not mad. :)

i suggest listening to get free by lana! it shows a more optimistic side of her songwriting, and i feel like you’d live for it 💌

Yosemite is incredibly underrated!!
YOSEMITE IS SO UNDERRATED. FAV SONG ON CHEMTRAILS

Agreed. Stunning song🌹🌹🌹
I always took the "I'm your man" line as what people might say "if you need this job done I'm the man for the job"
Honestly, knowing that you might eventually discover the whole Norman Ffffing Rockwell album makes me so happy for you, and I feel privileged that you share this with us! Thanks for the deep dive, the generosity and the love. I hope you can feel the reciprocity. ❤
Every song on the NFR album is worth listening to! One of the best albums ever. 💚 always love hearing your thoughts and interpretations
❤❤❤
the way you understood it right away at the start is amazing
I’m glad I was right on bc ultra violence took me awhile!
I feel like people do see me as weak because I choose to be kind, but I've been through some shit, I've felt abandoned and I feel that true strength comes in never making others feel the way that I felt.
Exactly. You have evolved beyond those people that see you that way. people won’t always understand that kindness is power.
Didn’t think I could love Lana more than I already do but…your reactions give me the goosebumps I experienced listening to these songs for the first time. 💜✌️

i think the term "mariners" also has a nautical connotation, which could suggest the idea of navigating through stormy waters or uncertain territory in the relationship.

Ha! Not intrusive at all! I move around a lot bc my place is small and I have a weird urge to always be moving furniture around lol
And thank you!
@@mendwithmere omg same im always moving my stuff around

Thank you so much for your videos. I really love watching you react to songs it opens my eyes to things. I really appreciate you and im glad that I discovered your channel
Marathoning your videos because I miss that smile!! 🤍
yt just recommended me your video, i loved it, i love your energy and all the things you say about the lyrics and life in general!! thank you!!
even knowing those songs I love to watch you break them down so I can look at them through different lenses 🤩🤩🤩
I disliked this song for a while back in the day but now I have been enjoying it immensely. Lyrical perfection really
i love your reactions! i always looked at this song as an argument between her and her lover, going back and forth (which was actually happening at the mariners apartment complex) the chourus is from the male perspective („i'll command your boat to me again”, „i'm your man”) which shows he wants to "tame" her or control her/keep her home/in that life forever. all that while one of her parts (i'm the board, the lightning, the thunder) shows that she just can't be something that she is not. she's wild and unpredictable.
WOW I LOVE THIS, THIS JUST BLEW MY MIND
even if it's not about that i will now listen to this song completely differently cause this makes so much sense 😭
Wow. Thank you for this insight. That does line up!
You should React to "Violets for Roses", "Change" or "Beautiful" by Lana del Rey...
I think when Lana says "I'm your Man" she means to invert gender roles, finding power in her vulnerability and femininity instead of seeing it as weakness as many have criticized her.
Elton John's Candle in the Wind was originally about Marilyn Monroe. He adapted it for the Princess.
❤the Leonard Cohen I'm your man reference you picked up on!
ur reactions are everything mere 🫡🫶🏻
❤❤❤❤
I'm really glad you brought up the people taking advantage of you thing because i wish that i could've started my learning process of it a lot sooner lol
I have been enjoying your reviews of LDR. She has been a favorite of mine for a very long time. I would love to see what you make of Lingua Ignota.
have you ever thought about reacting to a full album? maybe by doing a live stream🤷🏼♀️
i love how you dissect the ‘simple’ sentences .. makes her music even more relatable to me than it already is 🤍🫂
i love how she is accidentally a LDR fan hahah love your videos!! Old Money is my fav song
This is one of the best songs ever fr
I'd love for you to analyze limp by fiona apple. the whole album (when the pawn) actually.... but specifically that one :)
Thank you!
I’m so happy to see this tonight!
i love hearing yr intake on Lana's songs you mention stuff in some songs that i never thought of thx for yr perspective😊❤❤
This one is my favorite Lana song, it’s the one I relate to the most, in a very very personal level
It reminds so of a siren mermaid calling out to hypnotize the sailors haha
Thanks for your channel . Always looking forward to seeing your latest vidéo. Your analyses are relevant and full of sinerity, émotions and yet full of humor . Bises de France
Thanks for another upload...love Lana and your reactions. All the best from Dallas, TX!
YESSS MERE, ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS!!
I love this song SO MUCH im not even joking
The album this song is on, Norman Fucking Rockwell, the first time I listened to it straight through in order, I felt like it was a love letter almost.
I love NFR, the album, so much. I think you might appreciate a lot of the songs from it, so I hope you'll listen to it, either by yourself or with us on stream, whatever's more comfortable.
And also why I love your reaction videos is that it's not just a reaction, you analyse the lyrics, trying to interpret them in your own way, and I think this helps me understand them better as well (since I often understand social things only half way, because of autism haha).
I love this song so much and I love your reaction to it! Thank you!!!
I hope you're react her song that have psychological message:
-dark beauty
-shade of cool
-cola
You should do Lina Morgana. She’s a very talented artist who released beautiful music who is now dead💋
Omg cinnamon girl and happiness is a butterfly…….
I LOVE how you seem to have many different BEAUTIFUL backgrounds in each reaction video. I therefore challenge to keep diversying with pretty and aesthetic backgrounds 😊😅❤
I always look forward to your videos and I just saw that you had posted just now and I literally screamed
Btw you're so beautiful and sorry if it's too long❤
These videos make my day and hope you continue 💕 I recommend listening to Get Free another one of her more optimistic songs.
Thank you Chris! I’ll definitely react to it and I’m so glad you like my videos❤
