I made my brother a mini s'mores kit when he was living away from home for a few years. I used mini marshmallows, a tea light candle, chocolate chips, and Golden Grams. Which is a Canadian, I think American too, breakfast cereal.
so cool! I love the steal like an artist series! I also love that you fearlessly go ahead with projects even when you aren't quite sure you have enough clay, or how to proceed!
I'm so glad you did the slip over the bricks. It's very midcentury modern to have that sort of look. Copying an artist you admire to figure out your own process in something inspiring is, in turn, super inspiring to me in my own art. A fantastic project to watch unfold!
Kate Schroeder has a video on the ceramic school that is really good. For her plants in pots she makes a bunch of small nuggets and then glaze glues the pot with nuggets and leafs on nichrome all together in the glaze firing. The whole video is really good anyone reading this and wanting to know more about KS's work should definitely check it out!
Kate Schroeder is such a great inspiration! I was able to nab a few of her pieces in a drop last year and I love them, her attention to detail is incredible. I love watching you put together complex slab projects like this, wonderful outcome! the textured slabs came out sooo good and I've totally done the reclaim "frankenslab" method before too
Love seeing steal like an artist comin back! Always fun to see people take on things that might be outside their wheelhouse or comfort zone and see what their unique approaches are--and as a bonus it introduces people to other artists!
While watching you create this masterpiece, I became emotional. I wish, I were as talented as you are. I may try making it in a smaller scale! Thank you so much, Mia! 🔥🔥🔥
I’d be interested in a video that gives project ideas, tips and tricks for those who only have access to pottery classes where you can only go once a week and can’t work on anything at home. How does one go about projects that need any drying time while in construction when you can’t just go back the next day. Any thoughts? ❤ Love this series and all your videos!
Hey :) I recently stumbled upon your channel and now binge watch your videos. You seem to be a very nice and humble person but sometimes I find you're underestimating your talent. You're doing great work! Sometimes you state that you would never come up with such ideas by yourself but I'm convinced you could do it. Take the cardboard style pottery for example. Maybe the artist saw the other guy doing metal style pottery and thought ok how can I make this my own and came up with cardboard. So maybe your style could be to make something look like fabric (or whatever) Or in other words, you could adapt the fundamental idea of someone and alter it until it's your own. That's how most creative processes work :)
It came out really cool. In floristry, there is oasis, its green, for things like dried flower arrangements, it is kind of similar to a polystyrene in texture, might be good for your leaves to keep them placed. 😊🌾🌈
She looks like a friend who bombards me with questions if I stop doing my work or neeting alone. I need some push because I sometimes feel mellow. Subscribed!
Thank you for being yourself. I admire the craft because of how genuine you come across accomplishing these projects you share. You aren’t pleasing the masses by these outlandish goals, you are bringing us projects that YOU enjoy and it’s genuine. Great personality with a talented ambition that keeps everyone drawn in to see these amazing pieces. Keep up the good work! Bless you.
this came out so amazing and your content is a genuine pleasure to watch💛 i’m sure you weren’t aware but palo santo is actually an endangered species, i didn’t see anyone mention it so i thought i would :) thank you for your work
This is so cool! I'm really enjoying your steal like an artist series! Since you were having trouble with the bricks lining up, if you do this again, maybe do the brick texture after assembling the wall, but before the mantle peices?
Your approach to creating and tackling trouble shooting head on is super inspiring to me I keep finding excuses to not create anymore but when I watch your videos it makes me realize it’s not that serious and that I’ve lost sight of enjoying the process ❤
Have you ever tried using the little corner wedges you are cutting off at 45 deg, like adding a bit of moisture and using them as lil corner coil-binders? They already the right length.
OMG this is super cool! Really amazing job, and thanks for turning us on to Kate's work! It's all really awesome, but have to say that tiny plant pot and leaves takes the cake for me. Really brings the mantle to life. 😍
I love this project and the result so much. 😍 You nailed the midcentury look, for sure. I might just have to try a primitive one of these when it warms up here (or give in and pay for kiln time). P.S. I didn't read all the comments, so apologies if I'm repeating an answer you already got, but if not, the stuff you stick stacked bricks or rocks together with is generally called "mortar." 😉
For reinforcing the corners, I tell my students to use the little 45° cuts which fit perfectly into the seams. Just a little wetness to rehydrate and voila.
since you aren't going to eat off the sculpture you could have used acrylic paint for the grout. I use paint all the time for my sculptures. You could have made paper flowers and used florist medium for inside the pot. Reused bricks come in a variety of colors.
So cute! It turned out great! If you make something like the plant again, you could try floral foam. It's a stiff foam that goes in the bottom of a vase and is used in flower arranging.
for future projekts like this, if you want to make sure you have enough clay, maybe you could do a rough template in paper. that way you can also scale it if there is not enough.
This is amazing! I love your version. Great call on the slip as it highlights the texture. I was wondering, since you use reclaim so much, do you ever have to add ball clay or is it plastic enough by just dumping your throwing waste into it?
Super cool project! FYI, the CMC Gum you added is organic and it will spoil if you don't add a preservative. Carl Jäger has some, item number 14384 (i also use it to make my reclaim not smell 😂). A bit of vinegar might also work. Oh, and you usually need to let it soak over night. I make a concentrated solution with the preservative already in it so it instantly mixes.
Kate uses underglaze only on her smooth bricks, for her more textured bricks I am pretty sure she uses different colored clay for the bricks, or leaves it all one color.
This turned out so nice! Inspiring me to give it a go myself (even though my slab building skills are seriously lacking...). Have you considered trying something like Michelle Wen's pieces for the next installment of this series? I am so impressed with her work
This was a great project! I don’t get on instagram much, so I like learning about new to me artists. And there are so many ways to go about those grout lines! Also, I received that tiny wheel for Christmas and I’ve been enjoying it so much! We’re currently building my studio, so I’ve just been using some air dry clay my kids have from years ago. It’s been so fun throwing tiny vases. I can’t wait until I have access to my kiln again and can fire tiny pots!
I really love the Steal Like an Artist series! I have a question about reclaiming clay. You said you need to dry it out before you put it back in the water to turn into either slip or reclaim. Why is that?
fellow potter here, bone dry clay soaks up the water and slakes down way quicker than wet clay, so it's easier to get a more consistent mixture more quickly... clay with moisture still in it doesn't absorb the water anywhere as quickly as bone dry clay will
I was so excited to watch this video, I’ve followed Kate Schroeder for a while now and recognised that little fireplace immediately, you’ve done an amazing job making your own version. ❤
The log holder could have been built into the bottom base like many modern fancy fireplaces. That way also the whole thing is self sufficient and contained. You could even put a striker strip around the pot or under it and add matches into it. If you wanted to even make a "lid" for the pot where the leaves come out and looks like dirt and below hides the matches to light it.
I've seen Greg-ceramics use his off cuts (from right angle trimming) as the 'coils' for the joins. Might not have worked for this, since they are hard slabs. But in the future...just a good way to utilize as much clay as you can (especially when you're running low on a color) 😊
Mia, your pieces come out, you put so much thought into what you make but you also come across as unsure, why do that to yourself, if I'm honest, it's what makes me watch your channel because I love the emotions you put yourself through, but in the end when it works, you gently pat yourself on the back when really I'd like to see you bounce around, be pleased, happy with what you make. This was another masterpiece. You are a great Potter in every way, sending you a hug,a pat on the back and another hug 🫂 just because I can x😂🎉😊
question: to your worry about them curling as they dried, could you transfer them to be on damp paper towels to balance out the water content and make it not curl?
woah! awesome to think we are checking out the sam artists. her house mugs are what originally brought me to her profile. really meticulous and incredible work.
I don't know if anyone suggested it, but I have a clay house I made in high school that is meant for tealight candles. It would fit in your fireplace too.
I want to try making hat but out of air dry clay cause I'm not a professional like you an your inspiration but really like what you made. Have you ever had something explode in the kiln? I'd be to afraid to use that kind of clay. Lol
I’m really glad you didn’t permanently affix the leaves to the pot. I was thinking you could add a real little plant in the pot. Like an air plant/ succulent. It came out so cute!!!
I wonder if you could roast tiny marshmallows with the fire 😂
omg 🥹
With tiny smores? 🍪🍫🍪
@SoleildePerez that would be so cute!!
I made my brother a mini s'mores kit when he was living away from home for a few years. I used mini marshmallows, a tea light candle, chocolate chips, and Golden Grams. Which is a Canadian, I think American too, breakfast cereal.
@@brittanywinn3955 that sounds so fun!
"Look at the absolute state of my studio, it's terrible!"
Proceeds to show a studio that is more organized than my apartment.
Right? 😅
Ah-yup
For real my place is chaos 😂
so cool! I love the steal like an artist series! I also love that you fearlessly go ahead with projects even when you aren't quite sure you have enough clay, or how to proceed!
haha thank you! It’s how I approach most things in my life and it doesnt always turn out so I’m glad it makes for a nice story :)
Well it feels very relatable to my style too! So it’s encouraging to see you just go for it!
I'm so glad you did the slip over the bricks. It's very midcentury modern to have that sort of look. Copying an artist you admire to figure out your own process in something inspiring is, in turn, super inspiring to me in my own art. A fantastic project to watch unfold!

Wow so cool. I love stuff like this. Makes me want to get a ceramics studio membership again! 😍
dooo ittt
Everyone thinks you should
I love how you talk to yourself/us. It’s like I’m your friend working through the project with you. ❤
Love seeing steal like an artist comin back! Always fun to see people take on things that might be outside their wheelhouse or comfort zone and see what their unique approaches are--and as a bonus it introduces people to other artists!
They looked like fancy chocolate bricks 11:59 yum
That's so cute! I love the whitewashed result. It looks so good!
Thank you!! 😊
While watching you create this masterpiece, I became emotional. I wish, I were as talented as you are. I may try making it in a smaller scale! Thank you so much, Mia! 🔥🔥🔥
that is so kind of you to say! give it a try! it looks hard than it is ❤️

Love this series and all your videos!
This is the calm and creativity I needed today ❤
Oh so CUTE! And also: thank you for also showing floppy pots on the (mini) wheel. Instead of picture perfect only

If you lay the white slip on the slabs before you add the brick stencil, that’ll do your mortar effect.
It came out really cool. In floristry, there is oasis, its green, for things like dried flower arrangements, it is kind of similar to a polystyrene in texture, might be good for your leaves to keep them placed. 😊🌾🌈

I am very impressed by what you can make out of literal dirt. How magical.

Oh this turned out super cute! I love those leaves, I think they've got a really good green going on. And with the tiny firewood... fantastic.
that little plant is adorable!!!
I love how exited you are when you dl that 😃
This is the best thing I've seen on the internet today, and today, I really needed this. Thank you.
The slip looks sooo much like mousse au chocolat that I really want some now 🤣
Love this. Could you have made the slabs in thr paler clay amd just added the brick texture with the red clay leaving the mortar gaps as paler?
This is the answer 🙏
I have thoroughly missed these steal like an artist videos!!!
Have you ever tried using the little corner wedges you are cutting off at 45 deg, like adding a bit of moisture and using them as lil corner coil-binders? They already the right length.

OMG I've loved Kate's fireplaces for a while!!! And yours came out so gooood!!!
Thank you!! 😊
I love the use of Palo Santo for fireplace logs.
So cute! It turned out great!

OMG THIS IS SO PRECIOUS I CANT STAND IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is so cool, Mia! Great personal touches on Kate's idea!
Well that was an unexpected therapy session! 😅❤ Brilliant!
Wow, that looks amazing. I love the white mortar affect. Great job.

Coooool. The texturev of the bricks is good !

I love your videos so much, you keep me company when I’m doing my own art ❤
love that! ❤️
Love this. Such a fun build to watch.
thanks! it was fun to make :)
As ever, your work is thoughtful and stunning! ❤

Wow! So, so cute! Just love it! 😍
And you still have some clay to reclaim! 😅
By the way, that clay is awesome! 🤩
Love this project! And love this series, I always come away with a new artist to be obsessed with
this is awesome!
Beautiful. So cute.
I really needed this bit of internet delight today, thank you for sharing!
I love this series so much :)
Gotta love it when it comes out great first try.
i really couldnt believe it with all those risks i was taking 😅
Franklin stove? (fireplace that heats the air rather than going up the flew) Pretty cool!
This is really cool! I want to make one!!

I would love to make a Japanese style hearth with a little cauldron in it! This is so cozy!
omg love that idea! 😍
I freaking love this project 😂 it's so cute ❤
Soooo so cute! I absolutely love it. But cant imagine making one myself, lol
This is beautiful
That was so much fun! Thank you.
😍 I'm obsessed!
❤️❤️

I love this sooo much!!❤
22:38 "Be-leaf it or not, that worked!"
Niiiice! Next Halloween, have a cauldron, and at Christmas, hang stockings!
Looks fantastic
Amusingly, this is almost a replica of the fireplaces at my mom's house
Fantastic!
מדהים ברמה גבוהה ביותר!❤
So fricken awesome! ❤
thank youuu!
It would be so cute to have a a cone incense burner version of this
It’s fantastic!
Loved this! Thank you

Great work! 🐨👍
I love it so much ❤
thank you! ❤️
Isn't it easier to use the 45 degree tool with the long side flat on the table? I think it might be more stable that way.
