What do you think of adding either a gradient map or colour look up layer, set to maybe soft light and with the opacity reduced to add some colour to the grey areas as if they are reflecting or being affected by environment lighting. Love the image but when I’ve done this in the past, the grey sometimes detracts from the image, but that’s probably because I’m looking for it

Make sure the brush's opacity setting in the Brush's panel is 100% and that the opacity of the layer in the layers panel is also 100%. Make sure the Blend Mode is correct.

The smile isn't part of the tutorial. FYI: If you're using CC or later, you can make your subject smile with "Face Aware" in Liquify.

I just checked the link and it's fine.
I used the same brush you did but it is a lighter opacity for some reason, says it’s the same opacity
