Proud owner of ex Airforce Mog U1700 L CX (custom extended wheelbase) originally stationed at Woomera In South Australia, which coincidentally, is my birthplace and home. Purchased in 2020, the Mog was never removed from site to Auction holding yard, just literally arrived on my doorstep !!. Mine is an 8x8 traytop crewcab, air cooled 12 litre Mercedes engine,8 speed AMT gearbox, aircon with 3 ton Hiab crane mount on the rear tray. Mine came with 'bonus features' like sand tyres plus four spares mounted upright on the tray headboard, 200 litre poly water tank, 800 litres diesel tanks, remote inflation/deflation of tyres, extensive tooling and lifting equipment in containment, front and rear hydraulic winches, extensive led lightbars, the list is extensive. A highly developed specific package for extreme desert operations. Though thick rubber matting was installed ex factory, it had deteriorated, interior was gutted, all coating laser removed, and a oxygen activated acoustic absorption lining applied at a thickness of 3mm but expands once oxygen absorption has occurred, during at approximately 5mm thickness once cured. The lining can either be covered or remain exposed with no degregation. The difference is amazing, the cab becoming 'acoustically dead', much like a recording studio. The product is an industrial polyurethane which is applied hot but due to its ability to absorb oxygen, must be applied with supplied air. Extreme ? Yes !! But the results are permanent. Be aware that the sheeting you are applying is notorious for surface separation in extreme heat conditions due to adhesive failure. All the best with your Mog. Look forward to your mods. Greetings from Woomera in South Australia.👍👍🇭🇲
I’ve done it in my v8 muscle car made a big difference to in cab road noise and heat transfer via the transmission hump floor and roof.! Will be installing it again to my nissan patrol but maybe a combination of sound/heat shield on transmission hump and roof with spray on rhino lining on other areas etc.! 👍
Also unrelated, ensure that hatch is securely latched its heavy and can be dangerous if not secured correctly when driving over rough terrain, witnessed it first hand. Always check it’s locked in correctly.! 👍
Hi! My wife identifies with you !!! Soundproofing, anti-rust, new seats, new electrics, ... etc. We already made our "Dragon" and now we are traveling. Good luck ! Best Regards !
The Army engineers invented a neat trick for the steering. They disconnected the wheel and universal joint and then made a bracket they could attach it to up at the hatch. Can then steer the Mog from the hatch. Need two to drive though. One to steer and one to operate all the pedals. Would be trippy to try out. I did that sound proof/heat proofing on my Mog. Works a treat. I also had my upholsterer to sew some high end tightly woven carpet backed by closed cell roofing insulation and then backing to make a second sound proof lay over the floor, firewall and walls of the cab. I pulled edge mold off and created my own edge mold out of 1.2 alloy. Folded them up and curved to suit Held down with rivnuts. Works a treat.
Hi there again and just a tip on laminating fibreglass. Use a brush and when finished use the cheapest barsoap, cut a piece off and with water, rub the soap into the brush until you have a lather. Wash it off with water and you can use the brush again and again. great to see you progressing on your MOG. Cheers from S.A.
Merci mille fois. Your videos are extremely entertaining and informative. After watching this, I will be doing the same thing to my ambulance army humvee I picked up from the United States military. Great job to both of you
the craziest thing. After weeks of building my own touring rig I thought I couldn't take any more... I was wrong. Kudo's for finding the energy to film the build and share it, I reckon you are an inspiration for a lot of people. Also I feel your pain, hope I catch you on the road some day!
When I was restoring my Gen 1 Pajero I couldn't source nor afford to import dynamat. So I went down to the hardware store and got a few rolls of gutter seal which has a bituminous type sticky backing in a silver aluminium foil. It comes in different widths. I also got a couple of sheets of 1/2" HVAC insulation called armaflex. It made a huge difference. I used the armaflex on the roof and fire wall on the inside before I replaced the original rubber mat and new carpets. Was quite chuffed with the results.
Looking good! To further help with sound deadening in the cab, use builders expanding foam inside all the cavities on the cab frame. will help massively too. keep it up!!
Started following y'all because of the Jeep... sticking around because you are both AWESOME and you make a great team! Might be less beach adventures right now, but definitely digging the DIY adventure !!
Love your vids guys, yew !! That mog is beautiful beast. Doing a great job, well done. Said this before and here I go again , life is short, adventures to be had !!!!!!!!! Keep on rockin’ beautiful people. Love and good wishes ☮️❤️🙂
Gday guys, you,re probably not looking for recommendations but there’s a company called Styromax that make insulated panels that make perfect, easy and relatively cheap insulated panels that you could make a sweet cabin for the back of the Mog! Loving the build though, great idea for a camper!
Build is coming along Awesome well done :)). Got a bit overzealous last episode on the air system so this episode allow me to suggest a vid to watch to add to the bucket list of places to see. Great Bear Rainforest it's a very highly over looked area to visit when going/coming to Alaska (also my backyard). It's so refreshing watching you 2 enjoy yourselves with this build.
Chris & Ange reach out to Max and Occy. I think he is based in Oz and has just finisjed a van build where he used sound deadening material. Love the videos - new to the channel and hooked. PS I assume Ange is a model and you Chris are like some sort of famous Rugby player :)
All Unimogs are originally left hand drive hence the extra links to turn it into right hand drive for you Aussies. We used to get some Japanese vehicles in NA with something similar only the other way.
Hey Chris, did you do any seat mods to the Jeep? I’ve just brought a JK and would like to get a bit more room in the drivers seat. Wondering if you did anything to it, you seem like a tall dude.
loving this build guys , great looking seats. how about a little seat for the middle........for the little one...:-) cheers from 2 west aussies in Saudi
Have you given any thought to cutting out the back of the cab,and having access to the box through the Cab,thus eliminating the unsightly holes and patch up job?.
Your not alone , my wife is in there like a dirty shirt on all our projects , when she started she had a hard time as well . Now she can run all the power tools and can fix almost anything ,
Did you think about putting a layer of thermal matting in then the sound deadening stuff? Australia's pretty hot and the engine is right there in front and underneath you. Also the heat might mess with the sound matting without some kind of insulation between it. Just a thought.
UK military vehicles are the same , no ignition key .. i guess the last thing you want when under fire is ' who's got the keys ' .. ' oh i have , hang on not sure what pocket they're in '
Hopefully it's not too difficult or expensive for you guys but I'd buy one asap aha. Patches are surprisingly hard to find tbh. Loving the channel and positivity you guys put into your videos btw
You two must be familiar with 'Grizzly 'n Bear'. You're like a carbon copy! Except their home is a Landy Defender with a slide-on camper. Is the 'mog going to have a name, 'cos I'm thinking 'Wombat'?! Also, could there be a place in the back for the old seats, eventually?
Hi Jon, yes we are familiar with Leigh & Steph, another Frenchy 😛 the Mog's name is Bowser 😁 We are getting rid of the old seats, we will have a U shape couch in the back :)
Reckon you might be correct. I think new Mogs -at least some models- are built for both LH and RH drive; a shaft under the dash allows you to slide the wheel and pedals from one side to the other.
Might be too late.... but could you extend the cab to give you more leg room and more room inside the cab. Cut back wall out and extend...put back wall in again....just a thought...
It would have been nice that's for sure! But it's a 'big' job that we wouldn't be able to do ourselves (it obviously needs to be engineered etc) and also don't have the budget for unfortunately!
@@TheOutFit Of course, it would be a huge job.... what you have thus far is amazing. You are making great progress. Good luck... the video's are very enjoyable.
Now that you installed the ignition key, ask around where would you put a "kill switch" to cut the power to the fuel pump and prevent bad guys from taking your truck. Use this video for reference. ruclips.net/video/XUhXLsrZiE0/видео.html
@Peter Alan Clark They will probably have some jerry can inside or on top of the camper, but if I were a bad guy, I would prefer to smash a side window, jump start the truck and use it to steal the fuel. :)
Who else has done sound deadening in their build? Did it make a massive difference? 🔇
I did it in my old Mazda 626 sedan. Made no difference except increase the weight of the car by quite a bit.

There is not another woman like you Ange. Only one. Lucky Chris! Thanks for sharing.
thank you for the great detail video on your truck
Oh that video brings back memories. I did the same on my Defender during the middle of summer. Hell of a job but totally worth it!
Great to hear 😃 Can't wait to go for a drive in the Mog after we're done 🥳
Hey Ange and Chris. Doing a great job on the sound deadening. Well done. Love your Mog !
Great video guys - this is a really exciting project.
Great job on the sound suppression vid it looked easy Cannot wait for verdict on sound and the seat install 👍👍👍👍keep up the great videos

Great episode
Well done guys. Soooo much work!! Very impressive
Thank you so much guys! It's only the beginning 😅🙃
Well done guys 😎👍
Good work guys. A new yellow mog was at a Beenleigh footy trial yesterday. It was taller than the fence 😂
Great work Ange! Im glad you can get Chris to help sometimes lol. Cheers Steve
I'm in charge now 😎 ahah thanks Steve!
How many sheets did you need for roof & doors? Have you decided what material to use for stage 2, or straight carpet on top?
Great job guys keen to see what difference the sound proofing makes

Looking good. Consider fitting some heat shielding on the underside of the cab also. Carpet inside will also help, with rubber mats etc.
Can it be also used as insulation as well??
I am really impressed mate great job guy's. Logo is off the hook.
Really like the project! Watching your videos is great fun. Keep doing!

Yay! Will be a lot quieter for sure. Good job. We are on it as well but doing it a bit differently. Let's see if it works out as well :)
13:38 OK probably the funniest mistake in a conversion video. Lol
Im also planning on doing the sound deadening to my 4R, since I installed the roof rack I noticed more noise in the cab specially on highways.
Do the Seats need to be engineered because of the seat belts ?
Good job, guys. For some reason I had a Deja Vu moment. 🤪👍🏻
Awesome project!! Subbed and looking forward to more!!
Thanks for following along 😃
on ya big fella

Hi guys - im in Perth too, whered you get those seats? Ta in advance
Where about did u get paint to match the army colours? I have a Mack than needs a few holes patched up too
We bought the Protec camouflage green from Paint Powerhouse in Welshpool 👍
@@TheOutFit Awsome thanks heaps will head there and get some to paint my Mack.
Hey guys. Was watching the floor removal and grinding etc. Have you considered using a rare earth magnet to pick up all the shavings and rust ??
A little Simon and Garfunkel?.......Good tunes!!!....Thanks........T
Where’s that mad salt water fish tank I saw in one of your previous videos!?! Love the progress guys!!
That was at our friends' house who were kind enough to let us stay a while. Incredible salt water tank. I used to stare at it for hours 🤤
Have you given any thought to cutting out the back of the cab,and having access to the box through the Cab,thus eliminating the unsightly holes and patch up job?.
We will potentially do a 'crawl through' but not at this stage, it will be a longer term project :)

Ok Jeep was cool, but this is going to be Epic ! Great viewing ❤
Tremendous high heat in Australia won’t effect the adhesive on sound deadening?
It's resistant to up to +149°C 👍
I guess time will tell. Good luck. Are you going to attempt air/con in cab?
UK military vehicles are the same , no ignition key .. i guess the last thing you want when under fire is ' who's got the keys ' .. ' oh i have , hang on not sure what pocket they're in '
Chris looks like the Negri’s from Bruce’s rock WA
For such small holes, I'd use something like epoxy ribbon. It should easily fill this, and it's extremely strong.
I wish they did the sound thing when we had to ride in the back of the mogs lol it’s way worse than being up front
Reckon you should ditch the gun hatch unless you have a real use for it. The space for a rack etc would be well worth it.
With that much space on the back, why would you want to ditch the hatch? It adds character
How tall are you Chris? I'm 6'3. Wondering what the driving position is like for you???
Chris is 6'2. It's more spacious than the Jeep but somehow still pretty cramped 😅
Do you guys think you'll ever make Velcro logo patches in the future? I'll definitely be keen to buy some to add to my roof collection
A few people have asked that so we'll probably look into it 🙂
Hopefully it's not too difficult or expensive for you guys but I'd buy one asap aha. Patches are surprisingly hard to find tbh. Loving the channel and positivity you guys put into your videos btw

Could that steering shaft be a cheap and simple right hand drive conversion? Just a guess.

4:44 that mental thing is why they could be easily LHD or RHD modified.
that hole is a coms cable port imagine something like a 3 phase inch thick cable goes through there
The combination of fiberglass, ferrous metal and water is a bad one, it causes rust. Better to weld those holes. It not, plug them with rubber plugs.
Be careful with that hatch. It's killed

The LAST thing you want to bedoing, while you're getting shot at, is ferret around in your pockets for ignition keys. No military vehicle has them.
