  • This video shows how to change the transmission fluid in a Honda Odyssey.
The transmission filter in a 2000 Honda Odyssey is in the transmission and can only be changed out by taking the transmission apart - major operation. So it is important to change the fluid every 30,000 miles.
The most important thing is to use the Honda Genuine Automatic Transmission Fluid - AFT DW-1. For some reason Honda had transmisssion problems.
Tools: 3/8 inch drive ratchet, two extensions or more (to make the reach from the top), 17 mm socket, WD-40 spray, long neck filler tube, and oil pan.
The key thing is to spray the filler bolt with WD-40 a few times days before you attempt this job with because it will make it easier to break loose. One thing, make sure you break loos the filler bolt before you drain the fluid, you don't want to get stuck.
I would ask my Dad why do I have to change the oil in the car when it is due, his response "You either pay me now or play me latter when it cost so much more",

Good video. At first I balked at the 20 minute length, but this walk through was very valuable and detailed with quality shots of the important parts. I changed the transmission fluid in my 2000 Honda Odyssey. It took about one hour total with prep and clean up for my first time.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I appreciate the very helpful effort to help people out by showing them how to do stuff like this. I think I am about to change my 2000 Odyssey transmission fluid!

Thanks for taking time to make this video - very nice and helpful. I had never changed tran fluid before (didn't even realize it was necessary), but did it this afternoon on my 2004 Odyssey (before watching your video).
I was not able to find the fill plug (but your video made it clear), so I added the fluid via the tube where you stick the yellow handle tran fluid dip stick. I may buy some socket extensions and try the normal fill plug with my 2000 Odyssey.
Silly me - when I saw the drain plug with the square hole (remember, this was before watching your video), I was puzzled and thought I might need to buy a special tran drain plug removal tool (with a square end). I measured the size of the square hole and started searching online for such a tool. Coming up empty, I kept wondering if I had anything that might work. Then I thought of trying a socket wrench - ha!
Also, when I drained mine, it was over a gallon that came out. I put three quarts in and ran it, but it was still looking low, so I added a fourth quart (but now it is above the upper hole on the dipstick). Where do you find specs that say it should be 3 quarts when filling?
Also - I don't have a car jack, just a pair of ramps, so I drove the car up on those to find and "break" the drain plug. But I too realized that it would not drain well at that angle, so I drove back off the ramps, then took the drain plug out. I could actually reach it pretty well from the front of the car.
I'm assuming that for my 2004 Odyssey also, that the tran fluid filter is inside the transmission (as with the 2000). Do you know if that is true?
Thanks again for the great informative video, John :)

Hey bro you did a great job explaining this procedure I also have a 2004 version of this van. But I think you left out a very important procedure . These transmissions were prone to problems and Honda came out with a protocol that when changing the automatic fluid we should run it maybe 15 miles with the new fluid and drain out that fluid and finally put fresh fluid on top once again. Look it up and. Let me know what you find

Raychristofer Hi, I have a 2000 Odyssey and a 2004 Odyssey. The 2004 manual mentions that to thoroughly flush, you should repeat the drain & fill procedure three times, then add the final fluid ($ add up with that). I don't see that in the 2000 manual (but it probably would apply to both).

Just changed the fluid in my 2000 Odyssey as well with 3 quarts of the Honda DW-1. Now It will not shift into D3, 2 or 1. It worked just fine before. Any suggestions out there?

The filler plug in my 2001 honda odyssey turned out to be a 19 mm, not the 17mm this guy says. Its possible but not probable honda changed to a 19 mm in 2001 from a 17mm in 2000. One guy said he could not find the plug because he was trying to fit his 17mm socket to a 19mm filler plug bolt.

Sorry if I caused you any problems. I cannot verify if the the plug in 17 or 19 because I do not have access to the Odyssey.

I have a ody 01 my father had it before and then he gave it to me when it had it like 165k and now have like202 k but i don’t know the other owner before my dad if he change it or not you think should be safe if i just do what you did drain and refiel ? I’ve hear people saying that some trans get worse after doing that but i think thats when they do a flush it

Forget the flush, just change the oil. My neighbor changes his ever 30,000 miles. The transmissions are not the best. He buys the oil at Honda, expensive.

    • @davidlis6709

If you have a funnel that is small enough and can get access, I guess you can. That is a really small tube. I find it hard enough to add fluid in the right hole.

Nice video. Very clear, no shaking. Original owner 2001 Odyssey. Much simpler way of changing tranny oil.
      1. Drive van onto curb. Parallel to driveway. Passenger front tire on concrete curb. No need to jack up van.
      2. Driver side wheel, on pavement.
      3. Place cardboard on ground. Slide under, remove tranny drain bolt. There is plenty of room.
      4. Fill tranny, thru the "tube". No need to remove bolt from tranny. Many videos on how to make your own
"fill tube". I used funnel, with attached tube and fixture at the end.

THANK YOU. This is one reason I hate modern cars. Old rear-wheel drive V8's were infinitely better, and easier to work on in every way. I mean, what arsehole designs a tranny with the filter inside the transmission??? STUPID!

Makes no sense, I believe that is why Honda has so much trouble with these transmissions. My friend changes his fluid every 30,000 miles and at about 120,000 miles the transmission started having shifting problems when it is cold. They wanted $2,000 to rebuild it.
