    I was in the audience. We were freezing. I zoned out because this girl didn't seem genuine or charismatic enough to capture my attention. I know the Duke University opens applications to students to apply to be a commencement speaker but why did they chose her and why did she apply? She clearly doesn't care enough to write a speech herself so why did she force herself to do this? She is just another overly-ambitious kid who wants to fill her resume with everything. Priya, if you are reading this, let me give you some real world advice (I've been out of school for years): no one cares that you were the commencement speaker at your college graduation. This will not help you get more job offers or more dates. If this isn't something you want to do...you don't have to do it. Also, shame on you for accusing TSA for being racist to you when they weren't. Did you even wear Duke attire to the airport and have another experience? By doing so you are invalidating everyone else who has had a racist experience at the airport. I am sure you have a full-time offer at a nice cushy consulting firm, but I'd advise you to take some time off and reflect on who you are as a person. The real world will always be there and isn't so kind. Peace.

    Im addressing the accusations of plagiarism, I find the duke speaker’s comments to be odd. She seems to admit that some statements were in fact taken from the Harvard speech. But then she says she was surprised and embarrassed to learn of the plagiarism, essentially admitting she did not write those passages. If this is true, the question then becomes, who wrote her speech for her? Either way, not writing your own speech for an elite university commencement, and/or plagiarizing another notable speech, both look bad.

    • @MakeitStop-er5kx
      @MakeitStop-er5kx 2 года назад +2

      I wasn't aware of a few of these details and that definitely makes this more interesting now. But I agree with you wholeheartedly, one would think a speaker at a university like Duke would have absolutely no problem formulating their own address to those in attendance. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky in 2006 and although the technology to catch plagiarism wasn't what is available now, I remember a huge emphasis being placed multiple times on a) doing coursework with honesty and integrity and b) how to properly cite and show sources you get information from that isn't your own. Excellent observation from my perspective though, okay be curious to see what, if anything comes from this.

I especially love that because she had to subtly accuse the United States of being racist even though she is here, & made it all the way to this honor of speaking, and then her thanks is her entire speech a slightly reworded version of someone else’s. Students should be able to now hear a completely different speech from someone else. In this case, you are exactly wrong. She is a South Asian Woman. Because both women and especially Asians are overrepresented at elite universities, I'll bet money that she had to get higher grades and tests scores than the minimum required of a white male. Because women attend college at higher rates than men, in some cases women need better scores to get in so that a school can maintain a 50/50 balance of men and women.

      Why do you have to make it about race? She doesn't seem to be unintelligent or undeserving of her place at the university. She just seems incredibly pretentious and cringeworthy, and probably figured that plagiarising a successful speech would impress the people around her. It backfired.
      There's zero evidence pointing towards her being there because of "equity". Insecure, ignorant idiots always have to make things about race.
      Commencement speeches are usually given by students who have performed outstandingly academically, no matter what their color or creed. I'd assume you might know this as it's pretty common knowledge, but from your kneejerk reaction of "OMG SHE'S BROWN, SHE'S DESTROYING OUR COUNTRY", it doesn't exactly seem like you were burdened with an overabundance of schooling.
