I have been saying that those of us in Africa who only know our COLONIAL languages are the real illiterates. Big ups to that Kenyan athlete who showed to speak in Swahili, we need more of this kind of representation. Mali recently dropped French as their national language for Bambara and I’m proud of them, we need to follow their lead.

It's imperative to have your own language, the children must have their home language spoken on the international stage and elevated. This is part of identity. Pride in your language can help protect the children from the world that often is judgemental and harsh towards black people. The west will destroy your self-esteem inside out, so holding onto your language is a way to hold onto yourself, and prevent others' definitions from warping you. If you think English is so great you're already a little warped. Defining yourself using your own language is one way to fight against brainwashing.

In most African countries today, fluency and accent is a sign of inherited social status, and so of economic power. It's one of the great successes of colonialism. The system ensured that the colonized always looked at themselves, and each other through the eyes of the colonizer. And therefore, even after the colonizer left, he'd always have eyes, ears, brains and hands in his former domain. The brand of the coloniser is no longer in our flesh, it's in our hearts and minds.

"New Subscriber", First of all I want to say that you have interesting content in your videos Mrs. Wongel Zelalem.
Next most people who have grown up in America and have never left the US, can be very stuck up when it comes to thinking they are better than other people not from the US.
I have been to many places such, as the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Russia, Australia, and Southeast Asia, during my time in the Military.
What I have noticed is that a lot of people in those countries can speak a minimum of 2 languages up to 3 or more! Most people in America only speak one and in some cases are so stubborn or closed minded, that they do not want to learn another language which is very sad. Most of this comes from the older generations.
Do not worry about what other people say or think, if you are multilingual speak what you know. Americans and people from some other countries just show their ignorance and maturity level if the make fun or have something negative to say to you.
The main purpose of language is for communication. If you understand what has been said, then the purpose was fulfilled. Also, I like hearing the various accents of different people when they are talking. There is nothing wrong with Mrs. Wongel Zelalem accent when she speaks English. It is kind of sweet to hear her speak English actually 🙂

Am in U.K. and every now and then when I speak you will find someone trying to help you to pronounce “better” , I don’t let anyone do that. My accent is a part of my identity. English is not my language and the fact that you can somehow understand what am trying to say, that’s good enough for me… Am unapologetically African. East African, Kenyan. My foundation starts with being human, followed by my roots and no one can change that.

We South Africans embrace those who can speak more native SA languages fluently, not European languages, we don't speak those languages, we have our 9 native official languages most of us can speak them all. We have refused to learn Afrikaans at schools and our people died for that during Apartheid era. Our languages comes first, not the colonizer's languages.

English is my Native tongue being from California, USA, and I envy People who speak multiple Languages and my thoughts were never criticize anyone because how they speak the Language! Just appreciate the effort, is my opinion! One final note when I do Travel abroad I do my best to speak some of the Local Language out of respect for the People! I may butcher what trying to say but notice still appreciated! Do my best not to be one of those arrogant Visitors demanding the Person speak my Language@ That is disrespectful!

    Totally agree
I don't understand why most of our African people make fun of someone who has a mother accent when speaking English or broken English. We must be proud of our accents because That is what we are, it's our identity. I'm proud of Nigerians because they developed pidgin which is similar to English. The diaspora speak patwa creole and many more which they developed themselves similar to each. We should stop considering each other as inferior just because we can't speak English or because we can't speak it properly

Why??? Africa is diverse and everyone needs to speak his or her own language. There are more 3,000 languages in Africa and you want other people to forgo their own language to speak Swahili? That’s another form of colonization. Swahili is not the most widely Spoken Language in Africa. Your proposal is dead on arrival…

I have spoken about Africans are being pressured to learn and speak American English only, as to present themselves as being competent and accepted by those English speakers. But who themselves feel irrelevant when speaking with a bilingual person.

It is really an African self-worth problem. Until Africans start valuing themselves enough to respect African languages, the rest of the world will not. Go Swahili! I’m learning Swahili along with my kids. We need to make Swahili the official language of the continent, that’s a small small step to show that we have self-worth that the world must respect.
