      That was the point of this videoz
      1. For historic purposes.
      2. To bring back memories to those who traveled on these beasts.
      3. Because it's not a common sight.
      This is the first time ive ever seen and heard one of these run under it's own power.
      It was truly incredible! :)

    These trains bring back a lot of memories during my childhood, the one thing for me and I guess a lot of people familiar with these train sets is when the carriages would pass over junction points they would give you a good jolt if you were unlucky enough to be standing up, luckier if you had a hold of one of the poles but if you didn't you had a surprise coming.

    I remember as a kid riding the reds to see my grandmother at East Hills, back when East Hills was the last stop, there was no Holsworthy line back then and after lunch I use to go back to the station and there was a siding where a few reds were parked and got to explore them. Them were the days as a kid you get to hang out the door of a red at speed and the smell of the hot brakes (love that smell).

    • @OldAussieAds
      @OldAussieAds 7 лет назад

      Mmmm... asbestos brakes. Jokes aside, I absolutely loved that smell too. Especially in the underground stations.

    Interesting to note the C7396 is one of the motor cars that was rebogied with air ride bogies and four motors. I always used to enjoy whenever I got one of these home from work as they rode so much more smoothly than the other cars, even the Sputnik cars.

    • @sydneytrainsvlogs
      @sydneytrainsvlogs  8 лет назад

      +Crosshead1 Very cool.
      Thank you for the info :)

    • @Crosshead1
      @Crosshead1 8 лет назад

      +Sydney Trains Vlogs the rebogied cars were usually marshalled into four car sets consisting of two four motor power cars and two non-power doored Tulloch double deckers. A fully loaded set of two single deck two motor power cars and two double deckers could challenge the traction equipment, particularly in wet weather. I remember a few occasions on a wet day pulling out of Denistone up the grade to Eastwood where the train couldn't get traction and stalled. Those were the days (maybe?).

    • @sydneytrainsvlogs
      @sydneytrainsvlogs  8 лет назад +1

      +Crosshead1 I always use to travel on the DD Tulloch Trailer cars it's sad that there is only 2 operational (T4801 & T4814).
      The good old days were the says of the Reds and Silvers in their original state :)

    • @Crosshead1
      @Crosshead1 8 лет назад

      +Sydney Trains Vlogs yes, I remember when the first Comeng stainless steel (but painted red) double deck power cars appeared. They made a bit of a bitsy looking set teamed up with the Tulloch double deck trailers.

  • @OldAussieAds

    I used to hate getting a Rattler as a teen in the early 90s (the Bankstown line was chockas with them) - always hoping for a Tangara. What I'd give to ride on one now! Also, I remember back then they used to mix the Red Rattler and Tulloch carriages in the one train. I also remember they used to mix the Tulloch carriages with the other double decker sets.

      I remember riding these trains when I was a kid in the 1970's and when I was in Sydney for TAFE in the late 1980's. They were very noisy but lots of fun, I remember the sound they made when they were changing tracks, sounded like they became derailed, lol, I hope to get to Sydney next month to go for a tour in these next month.

    Very good catch. Thank you for posting. I grew up with these trains on the Carlingford line although they were never called red rattlers then. That was a media invention of the early 90s before they were withdrawn. In the late 60s and early 70s there were often two-car single deck sets comprising a power car and driving trailer. In those days they would also run to Sandown as well.My understanding is that this is part of the CityRail Heritage Fleet. Do you know if this is true or not?Once again many thanks for posting.

  • @unclespeller6568
    @unclespeller6568 7 лет назад

    Ah, yes, the red rattlers. When I was commuting from Ingleburn to Redfern every day, back in the middle eighties, these were a common sight. I might have travelled in any or all of the carriages in this video. When travelling in high Summer, without air-conditioning, everyone would open the windows as wide as possible so that a gale-force breeze rushed through the carriage. The window-shades would vibrate furiously in their runners ... it was absolutely deafening! I remember how people would keep the carriage doors open, to keep the air flowing through; one would stand in the open doorway, clutching a grab-rail and watch stations go flashing by: Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham, Summer Hill ... I also remember the first Tulloch S-sets with their drab grey, or sometimes red livery and green upholstery, the lights randomly flickering on and off; the lighting was never evenly distributed within the carriage... -- thanks, Phil; your vids are awesome.
    BTW -- what 's the difference between a K-set and a C-set?

  • @HarishDharmapalan
    @HarishDharmapalan 8 лет назад +2

    Man hope this is not the only day it's testing. I hope to see it real life too. Too bad I was only 1 or 2 when the last of the carriages were withdrawn from service. I grew up with the Tangaras till I was 15. Keep me updated bro when if you know they'll be another testing or tour run.

    As for testing the train, it sounded to me that one wheel-set - either on the lead power car Carlingford bound on the powered bogie, or the next bogie on the trailer car, needs attention on the lathe with a flat that needs removing. Great to see it back getting ready to run again! Let us hope it gets our more often. Perhaps the preserved U set (stainless steel single deck interurban) will be in line to return to the tracks as well....

    I remember them well. The characteristic whine of the motors. I wish I could detect the characteristic electric aroma (I was going to use the word smell or odour but it doesn't give it justice). I think I'm getting old !!!

    • @sydneytrainsvlogs
      @sydneytrainsvlogs  8 лет назад

      +23Wolgan I never had the honour to travel on one of these however i do know the smell/scent/aroma you are talking about.
      It was quite strong as F1 passed me :)

    • @MatthewGeier
      @MatthewGeier 8 лет назад

      +23Wolgan That was the brakes - a shoe type that are now no longer used as they contained asbestos. I don't know if the smell was asbestos dust or the binder burning. This set will have modern non asbestos brake shoes so probably won't 'smell' right.
      You MIGHT get ozone ozone from the underfloor switch gear. Ozone has a strong acrid smell. The S sets would have produced ozone as well, but with the switch gear on the roof it probably dispersed into the grounding air quite quickly.

    • @23Wolgan
      @23Wolgan 8 лет назад

      +Matthew Geier Hi Matthew. You could be right, it may not have been electrical. But it was so characteristic as I recall. It is funny how smells evoke memories. Standing near a steam engine and the smell of coal burning is another pleasant memory.

    The only thing missing was that the doors were always open. Everyone rode next to the open doors, and I remember it giving me vertigo every time I crossed the SHB. I was in one around Xmas at Trainworks - they have a wooden version that was before my time - , but where are these kept.

      What happened to this person? I remember as a teen I was a smartarse and got off a red rattler before it had completely stopped and I remember nearly axing myself. It was amazing that it was going faster than appeared.

    • @unclespeller6568
      @unclespeller6568 7 лет назад +1

      When you got off before the train stopped, you had to take care to land on the correct foot, then run a few steps alongside the train. Land on the wrong foot and you'd sprawl headlong ... I did that once, on Museum station one night -- or was it St. James? -- going into the city after a day at Sydney Uni, about 1985.
      Back then the unused tunnels at St. James were not blocked off -- I think they just had a "Keep Out" sign -- and to cross from one platform to the other you had to climb down a little step-ladder to where the unlaid tracks would have been, and up another step-ladder on the other side.

    They never looked that pristine and it makes it look weird. The colour was pure rust and I will never forget the distinct smell they had. Oh yeah and you would never see a silver top it would be soot coloured lol. I miss the rattlers, they were the best.

    Why does it need 3 Pantographs? Is it made up with 3 driver motors, and the can't select just 2 of them?

      Hate the modern trains, they were cheaply made and bought from china (of course)

      +Dylan bennett If would have been better Youtubing the Tangara and the Red Rattler together. It would show a replacement rollingstock together.

      +Harish's Metro and Suburban that could've been a good idea, have it by itself at the start and then with a tangara when it returns

      You know, now that we have these around, I'd love to see a restored U-Set. They were withdrawn from service around the same time as the Red Sets.
