After playing Strive I realize that most fighting game devs are still focused on the arcade stick as a default. I haven't found a fighting game that actually makes use of a normal Playstation/Xbox pad well.

You have great audio quality and a good flow to your script, I never played any of these games but I was still interested

talk about ape escape, but also tekken lore is very interesting and you're brilliant at explaining it

Man, that "doesn't maintain momentum" bit was great, hit the ear *just* right and it's honestly my highlight of the video.
Also, Ape Escape! I remember loving 3 and playing it to 100% completion, though the MGS3 tie in was a bit too much for the young me... but now that I'm grown I'm really curious how it holds up!
Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

I'll say it once and I'll say it again, Sony shouldn't have let Ape Escape die the way it did already. PS4 added a touch pad to their control for even more things to do, Ape Escape is nowhere. Now the PS5 has haptic feedback and could easily run a stylish modern Ape game in 4k, but we have no clue what could be done. Just make it a remake of the first game as a big tech demo IDC anymore, I'd love to play this franchise again in HD that isn't just an old port. I didn't even realize (since I dont have a twitter) that the account made for the 20th anniversary in 2019 made a post talking about regretting something before shutting down, so maybe something was in the works but it went nowhere.
Oh and Rise to Honor was a fun ps2 game that used the right stick to time how you pull off some kung fu fighting. Only had the demo, but I played it a shit ton because of how it played.

death by degrees was an interesting title for sure. It mixes resident evil/mgs level design with a pure beat em up combat. I think the game has potential, especially when you get the parry timing down, but you're right, towards the end it becomes a slog.

Hate to mess up your perfect 123 likes but you deserve it here. Another fantastic job on this one. I always learn much about game design, history, and story telling or breakdown when watching your videos, both on games that I know and ones that I don't.

Very interesting style of video and topic, reminds me a bit of Matthewmatosis' Mega Microvideos series.
Being a guy who despises the recent surge of youtube video game essays, i'd say you're one of the few exceptions as your vids are genuinely well written.
Anyway The Wonderful 101 and God Hand are THE games that most well utilize the right stick in my opinion. Not boring like pointlessly controlling a camera and not gimmicky like other games that try to actually do something with it.
The act of controlling a camera itself is a flaw that hurts 99% of games released after the 6th gen, it can't be even considered a mechanic. It doesn't do anything by itself and takes you away from the actual game as you have to take your thumb away from the face buttons.
In W101 the camera is locked in a top down view at all times, giving the player a whole view of the action, with the right stick used to change weapons with a draw system that is actually really cool.
In God Hand the camera is claustrophobicly locked up close behind the player and the right stick is used for dodges. Having your combo countered by Azel on hard mode and rushing to get your thumb to the stick to as fast as humanly possible to duck under the flurry of punches can feel exhilarating, suddenly a flaw on the controller design was just turned into a gameplay strength.

To add onto the camera argument.
While both the games i mentioned have complete opposite camera designs and they're both better than games that opt for something in between. DMC5's camera is genuinely awful, it either gets in your way or allows you to actively break the game with its "enemies can only attack onscreen" rule. You can't see your enemies and the game has to accommodate that fact so they might as well not exist anymore.
Bayonetta noticed this and allowed enemies to still be on the fight by giving them audio cues to bandaid cheapness. Most games bandaid it by having vfx show and attack's path preemptively which is just bad design.
God Hand had enemies that attack freely from off its close ass screen yet it doesn't feel bullshit because the game is designed around it and it's always my fault for not paying attention, the camera is perfect for the type of game God Hand is. In fights you're always on your toes with a mental map of where every enemy is relative to you, reflexively dodging those strikes with the right stick making me feel like a goddamn fighting genius. Really pulls you into how a actual fight with multiple opponents is supposed to feel like.
Meanwhile pleb tier dog action games opt to give the character sixth sense and and instant counter, an even worse bandaid to a shitty system.

W101's stick example shows the interesting trend of porting up Nintendo's gimmick console's best games.
Like Skyward Sword. Suddenly that game's an unintentional spiritual successor to the last 10 minutes of MGS2.
Suddenly, the potential of the second stick is on the table again.

I remember playing Death by degrees as a kid, I was used to the DMC combat so fighting with the analog stick felt really weird. Never got to finish the game.

Huh...It IS weird that this was made in between Tekken 4's Tekken Force and T5's Devil Within and yet didn't turn out as well as either...despite those two being additional modes to a standard fighting game and DbD being a game entirely focused to 3D beat-em-up action.
I admire their attempt to make combat flow effortlessly wherever you wanted and incorporating spy stuff and Resident Evil styled exploration rather than just making it like Tekken Force, but maybe the combat was either too complicated or not complicated enough? Sounds kinda like it was a predecessor to Spider-Man 2 and the Arkham games, but those let combat play out on the face buttons and let your movements change what direction they were thrown out in, which always flowed smoothly despite giving you quite a lot of options for attacks. Commendable DbD tried to innovate with right stick capabilities, but I guess it wasn't as strong an idea as it needed to be or they overestimated the power they gave to the players when they should have scaled the enemies back a bit.

Does "Death by Degrees" have any story importance to the Tekken Series at all?

    • @GizouGitai
      @GizouGitai  3 года назад +1

Nope lol. Everywhere I look said it's non-canonical, which doesn't matter, because nothing happens in it. I think the issue was that Anna works for Mishima Zaibatsu/Tekken Force rather than Gcorp, when Nina's meant to be working with the Mishima Zaibatsu and she isn't.
In fact, because of a late-game twist, Nina was working for nobody. She literally did the entire game for nothing. It was pointless.
