Back in the early 1970's we held a motorcycle rally each year in the above ground section of this installation ( called the Dragon Rally, run by the Conway motorcycle club. ) such was the fame of this rally that motorclists from around the continent came-- one Lad came from France on a 50cc moped . I was on duty around 1,30 A.M. when he arrived -- set up his tent & the next morning he was up, had breakfast ( mobile snack bar ) collected his badge -- and set off back home in the slush & ice. He said it had taken him 3 days to get to Llanberis......... The locals told us that one of the ( narrow gauge ) trains derailed in the mountain & as it was dangerous to try to recover . the train & its load they knocked a hole in the bottom of some flooded workings thus flooding the derailed train-- could be the opening you found in the mine shaft. Today the site is an industrial complex.
