@@bleze666 Buy the ones that cost more than 15euros. Never smelled air pollution when i used a proper, unclogged (dust, sand, leaves, etc.) cabin air filter.
@@RubenKelevra but what is he exactly smelling (besides wet carbon from the filters)? NOx and CO2 are odorless. CH4 you can smell just fine, passing unhindered through a HEPA+carbon filter. Gasoline and Diesel fumes are not odorless and I would not expect a carbon filter to catch these either.
I’ve been using those exact charcoal filters for months now and I’ve experienced no issues and they work perfectly for me. No odours of any kind have entered my car since installing especially when driving behind nasty gas guzzlers. I have no idea why your filters performed poorly so I’m sorry that happened!
I have those charcoal filters and works well for me at the price. I drive about 6 hours a day and running the fans most of that time on auto and in havent noticed the smell. Possibly another problem with your evap system and not the filters itself
HEPA = High Efficiency Particulate Arresting. HEPA filters can arrest 99% of particulates passing through the filter. Carbon/charcoal filters are gas arresting filters; effective for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Auto emissions are a combination of particulate and VOCs. The Model X filter is likely a combination of HEPA and carbon, which is why it is so effective at maintaining high air quality in the cabin. The Model 3/Y stock filter appears to be a hybrid unit also, but with less surface area and thickness. It still works very well; I hardly ever smell auto exhaust when hvac is set for fresh air intake.
My 2018 M3 original filters was from Germany. I use circulated air most of the time. It only started weird smell a couple months ago. I just changed them today. Yup, it was in my car over 5 years 😁.
After my car started smelling like an old vacuum cleaner, I also installed the MANN filters a few weeks ago, they are basically the same as Tesla's original parts. The price is also quite the same. You can install them yourself if you're comfortable fumbling around in the passenger footwell, just make sure you don't lose any clips.
That "wet charcoal" that kinda smells like sweet alcohol is actually the activated carbon. It naturally gives off that smell. My dyson air purifier that has a hepa/carbon filter also has that smell. It was a little annoying at first but I got used to it. Some filters have a much worse smell than others.
Interesting test. However, in my 2020 Model S, I can always smell diesel and other exhaust, and even though I can monitor the air quality parameters for NOx and CO via CAN bus, the car does not seem to switch to internal air on its own. Maybe that's not working in mine for some reason? I didn't think a HEPA filter would remove all of the VOC from incomplete combustion in the ICE ahead. Are you saying that should work with Tesla's own filters and I shouldn't smell outside traffic?
Turns out the recirculate button has three settings, not just two... as Bjorn points out in his video. Turns out my S does recirc when the air quality drops. The automatic setting isn't documented in the user manual though. This is a perfect example of how NOT to emulate old pushbutton designs in touch screens. If you have the ability to change the text on the button, use it! Between the button states "light gray symbol on light background", "dark gray symbol on light background", "light symbol on blue background", try and figure out which one is the "forced off" state, and which one is the "auto" setting? How about just placing a bloody label on the button that changes between "OFF", "AUTO", and use the background filled/not filled to indicate whether it's active now or not?
The Zoe has automatic recirculation (even the old ones) and you don't smell anything. My old Bose Edition Zoe had also air ionizer which eliminated smells very quickly. If you were behind smelly car and the car noticed that, it would recirculate the cabin air and turn on the ionizer so that the smell would vanish. The new Zoe sadly doesn't have that feature and I miss it already.
the mann filter FreciousPlus series (yellow ones like shown) are superior if you are allergic to pollen. But much more important than buying a fancy filter is to change it regularly, at least every 12 month. I prefer every 6 month. The filter material will get saturated quickly (more or less depending on your surroundings) and the kept dirt begins to rot. That is what makes it stinky. The AC evap can also mold up from rotting particles on it, but thats a diffrent part wich can be "pressure washed". Here i highly recommend not to use these DIY disinfectant sprays for the footwell, it doesn´t clean the evaporator, it just reduces the smell for a short time.
The granules in those carbon filters don't seem to fill the pockets, a big issue when the filters sit vertically, it looks the same on $99 ones and the $12 ones. Seems like the design was not thought through properly and/or they cheaped out on the filling. They look like a money-grab rather than a proper filter.
Yeah.. If you wanna do a proper activated charcoal filter, you're going to need like 3x the hepa-filter volume in charcoal, and even then it will probably only last a couple months, if that.

The EV tuning filters are good in my experience. You can't expect them to filter out everything immediately, especially if you don't have recirc on. It might take a few passes of the air through the filter and about 2 minutes with fan speed at 5 or higher. With recirc on most of the time, my air is very fresh and I rarely notice any fumes at all. My tests with PM 2.5 meter in california during wildfire season confirm they do take most of the particles out as well. Cheers.
