  • 7 months ago a very thoughtful and kind art student of mine, Stephanie Nash gave me THE NICEST GIFT EVER: a beautiful glass pen. I am SO ashamed it took me so long to open it up and have a play with it but I am HAPPY to report it was so worth the wait!!!! I am SHOCKED at what I discovered and just you wait, you will be too!!!

Don’t be like me - I got myself a glass dip pen then found that I was so afraid I’d break it that I couldn’t use it for a long time. When I finally got up enough nerve to use it, my cat, Cleopatra, accidentally knocked it off my desk and broke it. I was so mad at myself for putting off using the gorgeous pen. So guys, don’t be like me - be brave and be bold and use your tools from day one!

Beautiful pen! Just a reminder -- don't bang the nib against a hard surface such as glass when you swish the pen in water to clean it. That can chip the nib. Since I don't trust my hand not to slip, I use a plastic deli container or a paper cup. Some people use a tool to run water over the nib instead, like a miniature hose.

I treated myself to one of those glass pens a few years ago. It was absolutely gorgeous and worked amazingly and for a long time between dips. Sadly I managed to chip the tip of it and though it still looked fine, the flow of ink was seriously impaired. I kept it however to admire its pretty swirls and colours as I didn't have the heart to throw it away.... until last year. You reminded me of how much I enjoyed using it, I may have to treat myself now to another one! 🤭

These pens are very affordable and I bought myself a few different styles. When I pulled off the protective plastic sleeve on one like yours, the whole tip broke off. The supplier refunded the cost to me. In the accompanying information with the pens, it said to be careful when washing the tips because they can crack off if the tip hits the sides of the water container. Other than those precautions, it's a fun experience. Also works with watered down watercolor.

I'm sorry to ruin the party... 😋 the bottles are GORGEOUS and they are very unique, HOWEVER I'm not sure they are such a very great ink storage solution, since...
      1) Ink contains a high percentage of water. Because these bottles aren't well sealed, the ink may dry out over time.
      2) An unseal bottle can also lead to contamination of the ink (Especialy if you have fur-babies, and their hair is...
everywhere... Lol...) Mold can grow over time.
      3) According to the manufacturer's instructions, the recommendation is to store ink in a cool & shaded place. That's why
most of us, FP & ink aficionados, keep our ink bottles in the original boxes, or alternatively, store the bottles in a closed
place, far away from any light source (Including light bulbs, btw... 😎)

I'm 1 month new to fountain 🖋️ pens and inks.
I have about 15 pens and my Jinhao 51a keeps writing. I looked at the converter and there is no ink.🤣
I am writing the same words that you were writing,
" How is this pen still writing?"
    "Wow I can't believe it's still going!"
I was just as amazed as you and so far i have written 3 full pages of cursive writing. It's still going.
I want to change inks, but I don't want to waste it by dumping it so I keep on practicing. Tomorrow I should run out.
It was funny watching you write down everything you said, because I was doing the same thing.😆
I am experimenting with inks also. I just bought a set of scented inks, so that i can surprise my grandnieces when I write to them.
I will check out your ink video. So far I have diamine, which are perfect, quink which is good and private reserve which are too wet for inexpensive writing paper. They bleed thru.
Thank you for your excitement about art.
I'm 61 and took some art classes( painting , clay and installation)4 years ago and one of my profs had your energy. She pushed us hard. But fun was the main thing while being serious with our dedication to the project. Doing it half a** was not an option.
Her classes were always packed like I'm sure yours are.
Thank you. Your joy of life is sorely needed in these current times.
    Be blessed,
    Leo 🦁

My mother bought me one as a gift YEARS ago… about 20 years ago… tried it out for calligraphy and hated it…😅 I prefered the upstroke and downstroke style. But never realized I could control the flow by turning though so thanks for letting me know.

I´ve also glass dip pens ... but attention pls, because this very useful tool can fast broken ...
I like to use this pretty thing also sometimes together with a brush for drawing with any color that I can clean after work with only some water - not only ink´s ... some people use this also for nailart , but that´s not so my thing.
there are so much possibility´s - for example to bring some details in my work, drawing, writing false calligraphy and so on :)

I have three glass pens in two separate set's and the set's come with ink's and the ink's have gold in them which apparently thickens them a bit. The one thing I would say is don't rattle you glass pens in a jar because the tips are delicate

YEARS ago, even before I knew what calligraphy was all about, I saw one of those pens online and HAD to have one. Then I saw the price (probably $20 or so) and indignantly thought that nobody in their right mind would spend that much on a pen!
    I. Stand. Corrected! Now I want to get one, since I’m teaching myself how to do calligraphy. 😂 I know I’ll use it, and feel so fancy. 🥰
P.S. Karen, I just love you and your fun videos. I’m so glad you’ve made this your life’s work. 🤩❤️

Thank you so much! Yes I did do them all 🥰 I find the bottles in thrift and antique stores! During Covid I bought some off of Etsy too. But I love to find them in person the best by far!

If you want to use permanent ink you might want to try the DeAtramentis archival quality inks. This German company also produces scented inks as does J. Herbin, a French ink maker. If spectacular colours are what you are after might I suggest the Troublemaker range of inks which are manufactured in the Philippines. I do not know if these inks are available in the USA. I live in Scotland and buy mine from Pure Pens in the UK and I do know that this company will undertake international shipping. I also have glass pens and find them a joy to use.
