  • Hello everyone and thank you for watching this video.
I thought this would be a quick easy video, but it turned out it took a lot longer to edit..
The point of my channel is to showcase, explain and discuss antiques and fashion history, mainly relating to the Victorian and Edwardian eras, as it is not only my hobby, but also my lifestyle - being that I wear these clothes every single day.
Because of this I never thought it was necessary to introduce myself, but after the many questions I've been receiving about myself I thought it was only fair I introduce myself, so I hope that this Q&A will give you an idea of who I am, why I run this channel and gives you some insight into the life of an everyday Edwardian.
If you want to participate in the next Q&A video make sure to check for updates on my Instagram:

In all seriousness, your channel along with the aforementioned gentleman's are great resources for historical menswear. I am very much looking forward to any content you put out. And don't mind the occasional technical difficulties. Your content is invaluable, and the detail is warranted given the severe lack of information on this compared to women's dress.
Since I'm a woman wanting to incorporate elements of historical garments particularly men's into my everyday wear, buying antique clothing isn't really an option. So I'll be attempting to make all my own clothes. I'm currently working on improving my sewing skills by making pyjamas and trying to find books on sewing historical menswear.

There are so many boring people out there... I'm always just filled with joy whenever I see someone dressed in a unique and artistic way in public, especially vintage styles, since that's what appeals to me personally. Or gender-bending or just in general expressing themselves. Anyone doing their own thing, even if I don't always love the style myself, always makes me really happy!
As long as it's not something offensive (like political or hateful) I wholeheartedly support anyone expressing their art and identity through fashion!

I’m so happy to know that I’m not the only one to get into historical fashion by watching anime with historical theme. I love the lolita dresses, suits and hats in anime so much that I tried to learn more about their history and tried them on. But I wish I had the confidence of these people living with Edwardian and Victorian lifestyle, they don’t get embarrassed or awkward when going out in their favorite outfits. None of my friends wears like I do, and they say I look like an old lady. This is very sad for me. I wish people would normalize historical styles.

Hi Sir! Uhmmm, I'm not sure if you know this (but from my research I've done, content creators here aren't notified of this), but your audio at around (27:13) became muted suddenly. This is (I think) probably because you had used copyrighted audio, although I'm not really sure. What I am sure of however is RUclips's algorithms suck.
Because I was actually going to watch the whole thing, but from that part of the video to the end it's all muted now. So, I recommend just not using any audio that you're not sure is copyright free (and is in the "public domain"), just so you avoid this happening again, because it would have been really nice to hear all of your answers. This was a very interesting video! I love the Edwardian period and actually think of it as like the peak of menswear so I hope to dress Edwardian nearly every day as well! The only thing is that I'm a blue-collar working man so I feel like I would probably only own a few items that fall under the whole "ultra-formal dapper gentleman" category and a lot more practical clothes that you might have seen railway workers back in those days wearing, I feel like that's a really underrated area that I haven't seen many history bounders online cover, which has made it a bit tough to know how to proceed into becoming an everyday Edwardian myself.

My question was answered. Lol. All goods on the mask. No worries. I do want to say, check out the Tatton Baird Hatters out of Springville, Utah. They make hats the old way, with the old antique equipment and their shop is just as much a museum as well. I believe they do online orders. The vintage style that fits me goes between Panco Villa and a railroad land surveyor or outdoorsman of the American West in the 1910s. As I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. The history of the American West and the railroad of that time is rich here. Its period and time whos fashion fits my style. I like the corduroy jodhpurs, tall riding boots and campaign hats. Finding tailors for the American style sack suit is difficult, as I a man of Polynesian ancestry, the clothes of the period in our many antique shops do not fit a man of my size. So I have to mainly rely on tailors who specialize in vintage clothing. Also, for me getting the confidence to wear vintage suit came easy. In Utah the LDS (Mormon) church is dominant. Every male wears a suit to church or to church meetings throughout the week. Just found your channel researching how shirt/ collar studs work exactly... I mean, It's sort of easy to work out but nice to learn from someone who still wears them, you know? Not going to lie, I'm now desperate to dress like a late Victorian or Edwardian man (I'm a Mum in her mid 40's!!), I'm not new to historical dress & am massively in love with the Victorian era. I have 2 1890's women's outfits under construction as we speak & have made 2 mens half placket shirts from that era, that I adore & wear a lot, hence my research.... I have some gorgeous British wool suiting fabrics & think I *need* to get a design underway for a me sized Mens suit too. How small do collars go? (Though, I'm guessing they're not tricky to make yourself, either? If I can make entire shirts, collars on their own won't tax me, I don't think?) Any way, long story short, thank you!

      Hello!
That sounds wonderful. I can't wait to see it!
If you're making your own collars to starch remember not to use contemporary fusing, you'll want all 3 plies to be in linen so that they can absorb the starch 😁
Modern fusing will prevent your collar from absorbing!

When my grandad died about 6 years ago we found his dads suit from about 1912. It ended up been kept in such good condition because my great grandad was hit in the head with shrapnel a passchendaele and ended up spending the next 9 years in a psychiatric hospital then he died from complications from his head injury. I wanted to try the suit on but my great grandad was so much smaller he must only of been about 5 foot 4 or 5 with a 27 inch waist and 36 inch chest. Way to small for any of his descendants because out of my grandads grandkids I’m the smallest and I’m 6 foot 1 my brother is 6’2” and my 3 cousins are all 6’4”. Only thing missing was the collars and cuffs from the shirt. My grandads demob suit was there as well.

Just a tip if you undo the braces at the back then you can go to the toilet without having to undo the waistcoat your trousers will come down enough to not be an issue. The braces will sit at the back of your neck and you simply pull them down and button them back on. Easy.

While I have an Edwardian style jacket, I could never go whole hog-- not that brave. One thing I really love is Victorian/Edwardian solid silver card cases. I have one made in Birmingham England, and it's one of the coolest, most beautiful items I ever bought. It replaced my wallet 2 years ago. Of course, you don't keep it in the back pocket, you wear it in a front pocket when it's too hot for a jacket and in your jacket pocket otherwise.

im fascinated by the way you dress to vintage styles using present-day and work-compliant clothing. do you have any tips for achieving an edwardian look with present-day clothes? is it a matter of tailoring or just having the expertise to recognize when a piece will work well? what do you look for?

    • @capitannerevar7792
      @capitannerevar7792 Год назад +1

He's been inactive for quite a while, but since I've managed quite a similar result, I find myself apt to reply instead. First: You should think like you belong to that era; If you see clothes that are "modern" but they fit your Edwardian fashion sensibilities, wear them! However, as a fashionable edwardian, you should get a feel for what fits your body. Your skin tone, body shape, height, width, face shape, hair color... It all affects the aesthetic value of your clothing. Clothes by themselves are worthless, it is he who wears them that which elevates them to potentially very beautiful heights.
With this in mind, it's time to focus on the details. Most people are completely ignorant of details that are abvious to us enthousiasts, to the point that to the average person, a man wearing a tie and a man wearing a modest cravat are identical. Use this to your advantage; make your outfit "modern" in principle, but extremely old fashioned in the details. Buttoned shoes, bowler hats, high-rise pants, several types of cravat, lapelle accessories, detachable cuffs and collars... All stunningly antique fashion choices that require a relatively careful eye to appreciate.
In short: Matching color and shape to one's taste while maintaining objective aesthetics is common to every fashionable time period, but the minutia are definetely not.

Considering how low ‘Atsugiri Jason’ sets the comedy bar in Japan as far as _gaikokujin_ here are in on it (i.e., so low you’d measure his cringe-inducing nadirs in ‘fathoms’), you ought to be the proverbial shoo-in, mate!
Edit - if you _do_ make a suit here in Japan, I’ll repost a reply I made in the comments down below; ‘Tamara’ in Kunitachi, West Tokyo. Full-canvassed suits (as well as half-canvassing for the budget-minded client), Holland & Sherry / English + myriad Japanese-produced fabrics, a real eye for tailoring. Shinohara-san is the guy, all made by him in-house. He’s done two suits for me now, as well as my off-the-rack suits’ adjustments. He’s not a franchise like ‘Azabu’ or anything. Failing that, Isetan in Shinjuku has personal tailoring that’s alright but it’s all just half-canvassed, though very high quality regardless.
