- How To Cook Indian Style Chicken Curry - Chicken Curry Recipe For Beginners
If you follow this video step by step then I assure you that you will be making the best Indian style chicken curry. I tried my best to explain everything in detail and all the tips and tricks possible that go into making chicken curry.
Ingredients for making a chicken curry - serves 6 to 7
* 2.2 lb/ 1 kg chicken on bones. Please note that I preferably use chicken on bones for making a chicken curry. It's not that you cannot use boneless chicken but the gravy won't be as tasty.
* 2 large potatoes quartered or medium potatoes halved. I did not boil the potatoes before adding them.
* 1 very large onion or 2 medium sized onions. I used quarter of the onion for making a paste.
* 2 inch length ginger
* 10 large garlic cloves
* 1 large tomato
* 2 green chillies (optional)
* 2 large dry bay leaf
* 1 inch length cinnamon stick
* 6 to 7 green cardamoms
* 4 to 5 cloves
* 1/4 th cup plain unflavored yogurt
* 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
* 2 heaped teaspoons Kashmiri red chilli powder. You can even use regular red chilli powder but in that case please use less. Adjust the proportion of any chilli powder according to your tolerance of heat level. Add only half a teaspoon to start with, do a taste test at the end and add more if you feel you want more chilli heat.
* 1 tablespoon ground coriander
* 1 teaspoon garam masala powder.If you want to make garam masala powder at home then here is the recipe - • 3 MUST HAVE HOMEMADE I...
* 1/4 th teaspoon ground mace (optional)
* 1/4 th teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
* 2 teaspoons salt (add less to start with, you can always add later)
* 1 teaspoon sugar(optional)
* 1 cup hot water. You can go up to a total of 1 & 1/2 cups of hot water if you want more gravy.
* 1/4th cup oil ( 4 to 5 tablespoons)
Serve this with rice/roti/paratha/naan.

You strike a great balance between giving detailed instructions and moving it along so it’s not boring. Very nicely edited. My mouth is watering and I can’t wait to make this! Making a trip to the Indian food store for spices! Thanks!
Glad to hear that this recipe has inspired you to try it out. Please do send me your feedback after trying it. Thanks for leaving a comment 🙏🏾
I will try this today. Trying to avoid trauma at the table if poss. Thanks.

@josephgreiber3650 my thoughts aswell.
Please no Drama orTrama at the table
I've been cooking curry for years, and always thought I was pretty good. How wrong I was. This recipe is incredible, thank you!
I am glad you found the video useful. Thank You.

maybe your cooking skills aren't that good@@StonkSlayd
This commentary was spoken like a true mom because it’s every single thing I ever complained about 😭 hated onions, star anise, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, allll of it. Now look at me
Bumbi, you are an amazing teacher. Your step by step method and tips along the way proves to me that anyone following carefully will make a meal to be proud of.
Thanks for your kind words.

Wow, this is such a good recipe. I made a batch last night, and it was so good that I made another batch tonight (and now I don't have enough space in my freezer for all that curry!). The thing I like about this curry is the same thing I like about the video telling us how to make it: it is so well structured. From the garlic and ginger at the start all the way through to the mace and nutmeg at the end, all the flavours are there in the finished dish, everything complimentary, nothing overpowering. Likewise Bumbi walks us through the steps of the curry, explaining the reasoning behind each step clearly and succinctly. If you are watching this video chances are you are looking for a really tasty curry recipe to try. Well, you have found it.
Thanks for your kind words
Enjoy 😂
Well said... My Sentiments exactly.
(Edit a typo)
The mace & nutmeg at the end was the BOMB.
Also you could stir in some coconut milk/ cream at the end for a South Indian/ SE Asian variation.
I have literally bought a chest freezer to put these amazing curries in for when i want a take away. Im also making some chinese recipes too. Gonna fill it up! Only was 200 euro and i probably spend that very easily on take aways in a few months so i think it is worth it! I will try burritos as well for mexican too!
In South Africa we always put potatoes in our chicken or mutton curry. And often even butter beans.
Sounds yum. Have to try it out with beans.
I put carrots in aswell. Eish its good.
@@pietabosman8028 I make spicy side salads, of which carrot salad is great.
And peas🤤
Even butter beans eh? You rebel.
I love her voice, the tone and words that she uses and how she speaks. Very calming😄 and understandable. Thank you very much.😊❤
Thanks.
If she ever gets tired of cooking, she has a great carreer ahead of her as a hypnotist.
My boyfriend is South African and this looked just like the curry his grandma makes. I cooked it last night and it was perfect! Thank you for this recipe.
I am so happy to hear that
I love how you narrates your video, it makes me smile and inspired to cook indian food too myself. I've been trying to cook Indian food since i love it soo much but less chili for me. I'm from the Philippines but since i started working abroad i love trying different cuisines from other countries.
Glad to hear that my video has inspired you into cooking Indian food. Please do try it and let me know. Thanks.
Love this video! So well narrated, and it answered many questions I had about curry in general!

Loved watching this. Clear, no waffling and a lovely simple recipe. Thank you.
Thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing this recipe with us. I always wondered how an authentic chicken curry was made because it's always so flavorful and fragrant
It looks very DELICIOUS.
Thank you so much.
I am new at cooking. I appreciate how your explain the HOW and WHY of things. It means a lot. Thanks so much!
I am glad you find my videos useful
I definitely appreciate the step by step
And i love the how and y
Instant subscribe even if I'm not sure how many of your videos I'll ultimately watch. I love seeing someone make a fast, no-nonsense video with discussion of options -- and putting the specific measurements in the text instead of in the video makes me so, so happy. My brain gets so distracted when people are quoting measurements all the time, and it just makes each step take longer. This let me see the technique and not get snowed by extra detail. And it's focused on the recipe and what's actually happening in the pot, without excess "flare" like a couple other videos I just watched. Thank you so much! I hope your channel goes well ^_^
Thanks for your kind words. I am happy to hear that you appreciate the idea of putting all the measurements in the description box instead of displaying on screen or quoting them when video is going on. Unfortunately many people do not like it that way but I am glad you do. Thanks for your support for this channel 🙏🏾
You have the sweetest and most polite voice i have ever heard. Loved the recipe thank you.
Thanks
Thanks for your help!!
This has got to be the best video I've ever watched and listened to. There is so much kind, friendly and loving direction that it makes one want to keep replaying it to hear that sweet, sweet voice over and over. So much common sense and mother's love! Many blessings to this wonderful lady!❤️🙏
Thanks for your kind words. I am glad you liked watching the video 🙏🏾
Absolutely can’t wait to try this. I’ve been making curries for years but this looks fantastic with the blend you’ve got in the recipe. I wish I wasn’t going on a trip so I could make it right now….. my mouth is already watering. Cheers to the great video. Thanks for your expertise. ♥️🧞♀️
Thanks
Thank you so much for your thorough instructions
This looks amazing and I can’t wait to make it your way🙏🏼💕
God Bless
Excellent video! Love that you don’t waste time talking and start cooking and you explain very well !
First time watching your videos and have just subscribed! The simplicity and humour of your narration is perfect 😃. I absolutely love chicken curry with potatoes and will definitely try your recipe 🙌🏼.
Welcome to the Curries With Bumbi family. I am glad you are here. Please do visit my channel page for more recipes. Thanks for your support 🙏🏾
I used regular chili powder, left out the cloves, used a star of anise ( I happened to have one that was gettingold), no mace nor nutmeg. It came out spicy and delicious with the right color and texture. Great video and thank you for sharing!
Perfect recipe for a novice cook. I've been looking for such a recipe which explains all the basics.
Looks amazing! Can't wait to try!
Thank you for sharing!
Other than the recipes themselves, another thing I like about your videos is how you teach us the words for spices in your language. Haldi, jeera, kasoori methi, etc. Not all Indian recipes on youtube are in English, but as long as I know the spices being used, I can usually follow along.
Glad you find my videos useful. Thanks for leaving a comment
I love this recipe❤️And I love the way you explain 😁Now I’m gathering all the ingredients & spices I have and I will cook this tomorrow for the family . Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks. Glad you find my videos useful. Please do send me your feedback after trying this recipe.
I love the ingredients
Thank you for showing how to make this.
Looks delish. Your directions were very detailed and I cannot wait to make it. TFS!
Wow, I can’t wait to make this.. I love Indian food, and you show us how to make it properly and easily.. I have always thought they are out of my culinary abilities, but watching this, I am very confident to do it now.. and I love all the tips you give as you are going, without making it complicated.. this is my new favourite channel, thank you so very much for creating this channel.. it’s going to be my go to several times a week now 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for your kind words. I am so glad that you find my videos useful.
As a busy Amma to 2 kids these videos save me from kitchen drama. We thank you!! Please continue to make more 😊

The support that I get from you all helps me to become a better teacher. Always love reading your wonderful inspiring comments. Thanks Emily .
Cooking with patience and ❤ for the second time now, family loves it.
Thank you 😊
Made this today. Excellent. Thanks very much!!
Just a quick next day comment following my first one. I just made this today and had it with potatoes in and served with a mixed vegetable pilau rice using Basmati rice and cauliflower carrots and French beans. The chicken curry was gorgeous and my wife thought so too. I used fresh chillies and chilli powder. Nicely hot but not overpowering. I'll make it again without doubt. The puree at the start made all the difference to the smoothness.
So happy to hear that you liked it. Thanks for your feedback.
Please do check out pulao biryani and rice recipes on my channel as well -

I cooked and learned from a 85 year old lady who was the Temple cook and did all the catering at her temple. She learned from her granny …
This is almost exact as she taught me.
That reminds me, Haven't had chicken curry for long. Your recipe is so eloquent.
Very tasteful video Bumbi,
Awwww!! ♥️♥️♥️
Love the recipe.
Thank you
Thank you. I will try your recepie.
love it ...yummy 😋 looks absolutely delicious...making me hungry 😜
will try the tomato paste with ginger garlic and green chillies. You are so right about the potatoes ...can't have the curry without the soft potatoes😋😋😋
Thanks Farida for leaving a comment.
Bumbi, I have just finished making this Chicken Curry, it's in the pan and ready for our evening meal.......I've only tasted it during cooking but if it is anything like the other meals I have made following your guidance then my family is in for a real treat. Thank you for all you give freely to help us all enjoy Asian cuisine.
I am so very happy to hear that you try my recipes and your family enjoys having the meals prepared by you. All credit goes to you as you put in all that effort into making it and bringing smiles at the dinner table. I am here just to give ideas. Thanks for your lovely comment 🙏🏾
This is the most delicious curry I’ve ever had. Thank you!!
Thank you kindly for sharing this!
Awesome.... you were absolutely right about the potatoes in chicken curry, they always taste better than the chicken. Another thing about spices / garam masala, most people tend to overuse them. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this recipe
Thanks for leaving a comment 🙏🏾
Hi new subscriber here I’ve just made this curry and honestly my wife an me have tried for years to get a curry right 😑. I can honestly say it’s turned out amazing this has to be the simplest recipe on youtube and it is definitely the best thank you for sharing I look forward to making more of your recipes all the very best Carl & Tracey 😊
Hi Carl & Tracey, I am so glad that you liked the recipe. Thanks for trying it and for leaving a lovely feedback.
Amazing thanks. Love the way you explain it.
I can't wait to try! I am leery of the premade spices and wanted a more authentic approach. Thank you!
This is a very credible and authentic recipe and presentation. Bravo! I have watched hundreds and hundreds of cooking videos and feel the cautionary advise offered at 6:40 is the most unintentionally witty yet genius offerings I have ever heard in a video of this kind - "to avoid any unnecessary trauma at the table." Fabulous!
“ unnecessary whole spice drama” 😀
Thanks for leaving a comment
You are such a good teacher,that looks fantastic.Your family are lucky to have you around cooking such a dish.
Thank You for your kind words.
Excellent recipient with clear instructions.
I love this type of recipe for chicken.
I always make a 🌯 out of it. I love all the spices, incredible.
I do enjoy your cooking advice more than most others! You are just so sensible, and that is lovely. Great recipes, every time.
Thanks Hollis for all your support.
So I've been regarded as a great home cook for years. This is honestly one of the best things that I have ever made. Halved the heat for my spouse but the flavours at the end were ridiculous. Your advice that this requires patience is spot on. This is not a fast dish to cook, but well worth the wait. Add the "additional" ingredients. The Kashmiri chilli powder was amazing. Its infrequent that I try a recipe for myself and end up planning my next dinner party. Your hints about using spice wisely is spot on.
I am glad you found this video useful. Thanks for your feedback 🙏🏾
I will try to cook this menu..thanks for the sharing❤️🙏
Delicious thank you.🙏🌻🙏
I've always used store bought paste because I thought making it from scratch is quite a hassle. However, looking at your recipe and video tutorial is quickly convincing me that it's worth the extra effort and time. I'll definitely try it out for my next curry chicken dish!
Please do try it and send me your feedback. Thanks for leaving a comment.
I made the recipe for curry paste she has and it wS like an indian resteraunt ...you can add different things to it to make it different like tomatoes tamarind or cream and almonds or extra spices to make it more spicey. I just made a big batch for my son at college to be able to make nice food. Its amazing and i bought the whole spices and used my blender ninja to crush them fresh omg the smell!!! And i had no idea how they got the flavour as i have always tried but the paste id full of caremalized onions which makes it soooo tsste like the réal thing! Good eating my friend!
@Padraigp I am so happy that you found my base gravy recipe useful
@@CurriesWithBumbi yes i am at the asian shop right now to buy some kore things ...star anise and they dont have the chilli pepers you reocmended. They are more a chinese thai asian shop. I qill ask for something mild but very red. Hioefully that will work ok. I already made one of your curries too with chicken it was amazing. Best curry i ever cooked. I hope my son is impressed with the paste!
I tried the paste for a change, but not keen on it. I always add my own fresh garlic and ginger
Looks gorgeous! 😋Yummy for my tummy. 😁 I'm gonna make this as I've got all ingredients apart from yoghurt. Will get it tomorrow when shops are back open. Well, some little shops anyway.... MERRY XMAS EVERYONE! 🧑🎄
Merry Christmas to you. Thanks for leaving a comment
Very good instructions I will try this recipe
“If you don’t have the patience, then please don’t plan on making this.”
Absolutely classic, Bumbi. Well said, and this curry is worth the patience.
Thanks for leaving a comment.
Bumbi my dear.. it’s been so long since I watched ur recipe videos . We wer on a vacation to Paris n then on returning back we had internet issues at home.. jus yesterday everything got fixed n now I vl b watching all the videos dat I missed.U have very nicely elaborated the procedure of chicken curry .. looks very inviting ..Thank u for the recipe .. have a great weekend dear ..💕🤗
I was thinking why I am not getting any comments from you and you were greatly missed. Glad to hear you went for a vacation because a change is always required for the body and mind. Thanks Pooja.
I find your version perfect for me. Thanks so much for the in-depth info. And your voice is soothing ❤
Thank you for sharing this recipe. I always used the Indian jar curry sauce but now I will use your recipe 👍🏽🙏🏽
This is hands down one of the best cooking videos I have seen on RUclips. You obviously know what you're doing, and the attention to detail that you have and portray to us as viewers is admiral. Thank you so much. You've just earned a new subscriber.
The only constructive criticism I could add is that it would be nice to see a final dish that's served. Very minor criticism. I look forward to seeing more of your content.
Thanks for watching. I try my best to show the final dish but somehow I forgot doing that for this particular video.
I made this recipe tonight and it was absolutely delicious. Added a few more green chilies because my wife and I like it spicy. Made homemade naan bread as well. Pretty easy to prep the naan and start the curry and finish everything together even with basmati rice. Thanks for sharing your recipe Bumbi ❤
I am so happy you liked it. Thanks so much for your lovely feedback.
Some really great advice in this video. Thank you.
Wonderful. Your family is so lucky to have you!
These are very helpful tips! I am guilty of rushing things at times for certain 😊 can you tell us how long the ginger garlic tomato paste lasts in the fridge please? I’m wondering if it could be made in a batch? Thank you as always 💕💕💕
You can make the ginger garlic green chilli paste and it lasts in the fridge for a week. Please do not add much water but add salt and little oil. In that way it may last a little longer than a week but the ginger garlic green chilli paste can be frozen. I sometimes make a large quantity and freeze in ice trays. If you add tomatoes it won’t last for more than a day but you can always blend the tomato separately just before cooking.
Perfectly cooked just like a Durban Mutton Curry with the mandatory potatoes, looks lovely! Just a little tip , cardamoms are hard to completely remove after cooking I thread 5/6 onto a toothpick so easy to remove when the time is right:)
I remove the pods and grind them into a powder. Biting into a stray cardamom pod is one of the worst things that could happen while eating.
Or put it in cheese cloth like a teabag
Great recipe thank you 🙏
Good evening thank you for reaching this Delicious. Recipe.
Tip. For people who do not like to add sugar to dishes, honey or ground dates is a good alternative to sugar.
Thanks Brandon for sharing that tip with us. Really appreciate it.
Ground sultanas are also good.
Good job. And simple..Thanks!!
Looks delicious
Thank you it’s perfect
Thank you so much! I've been looking for such a site for learning the art of Indian curry

Its so great to find someone who likes adding potatoes to dishes that dont normally have them. I love them.
Thank You
